http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3511535 Great deal for the Yankees but i do admit, Farnsworth has got a lot better in the middle of the season for the yankees
Nice pickup for New York, plus he's a Type A free agent if they want to risk offering him arbitration.
Great deal for the Yanks. Pudge brings a lot of playoff experience to the C spot and a major upgrade from what they already have. Now that puts Posada's future with the Yanks in question if they decide to keep him.
i don't think so. Posada signed that deal in the offseason, pudge is just about done...this is just a one year rental imo
Has their payroll hit the Billion mark yet? I don't see the hype of the "tradition" personally. Can you imagine how good an NFL team would be above all the others if one was allowed to be 100 million or more above the salary cap of other teams? Their victories mean nothing.
To early to say, but a switch hitting DH (ala Bernie at the end of his career) /part time catcher, wouldnt be a horrible move for Posada if we choose to offer arbitration to try and secure 2 draft picks if Pudge doesnt sign with Yanks next year. I dont see Damon, Matsui and Giambi all clogging up DH duties next year. Time will tell.
I think this means Posada is going to take the surgery. Molina is good but Pudge is a big upgrade for the yanks. Posada days are only numbered as a catcher, not a yankee... I hope i get to see pudge when i go to the game saturday! Also i think yankees will win the division insted of the wild card
Status Alert:Posada (shoulder) had successful surgery on Wednesday afternoon and... (+)Posada (shoulder) had successful surgery on Wednesday afternoon and he'll be able to resume light workouts in 4-6 weeks, the Westchester Journal-News reports. (Jul 30)
Has anyone checked Jose Molinas numbers? The guy calls an unbelievable game. Yanks pitchers have held opponents to a lower avg. and allowed fewer runs a game when he is behind the plate as opposed to Posada. He also throws out runners at a pretty nice clip. Offensively he's not going to give you much, but Pudge isnt exactly tearing it up. I dont think its a bad trade by any means, but there were other areas of greater concern IMO.
I'm extremely upset that the Farnsworth era in NY is over. Farnsworth had been pitching pretty well lately but I think Friday night's game vs. the Red Sox proved you couldn't trust Farnsworth in big spots (although I'm sure if the Yankees F.O. paid attention to his career they would have known that). I do wonder who will be the set up guy for the Yankees because I wouldn't trust Veras or Ramirez in a big spot either.
Astute pick up on the type A, though that doesnt get determined til after the year. Nice pick up by the NYY as you can do a lot worse....
But Molina cant hit a lick. Molina has a solid arm but Pudge isnt bad either throwing out 18/50= 36% and still in the upper echelon defensively. And hes a better bat even if he only walks about once a month.
Exactly my point. They just made an area of concern (the set-up role) a bigger conern IMO. If Dimaso Marte was their big acquisiion for that spot then I have bad news for Yankee fans...
Cox and Melancon may be up at some point this year and there is still time for them to make another move, so I'm not worried.
Marte is one of the premier lefties in the game. he was on the Series winning White Sox, and hes sported a consistently good era/whip for the last 4-5 years. There have been whispers that the mets could move one of their 3-4 lefties, so maybe the NYY move a bat (Melky?)? Schoenweis for example could immediately fill the role vacated by Farnsworth and do a better job of it.
I dont think this is that big of a deal. Pudge doesnt have much left in him. Sure the yankees are desperate for a catcher... and he fills that role well. I dont know, if pudge was coming to my team i wouldnt be as excited as some are in here. As for farnsworth to detroit. big deal... Sorry, just dont see this as a huge deal. It works for both teams i guess... but its nothing huge.
Cox has an ERA of over 4 in Triple A, and Melancon was out all last year with major arm surgery. I don't think you can realistically count on them coming up and/or doing well this season. Marte pitched a grant total of 1.2 innings in the playoffs in '05 and barely pitched in big spots in August and September because Guillen didn't trust him. There are legit concerns that Marte isn't a big game/big market pitcher. I guess we'll see.
Who do the Yankees have left in the pen. We all know the Yankee offense will be there but down the stretch nobody is gonna be afraid of this pen. Nice move to pick up another prof. hitter like Pudge though.
The Yanks have been flirting with the idea of calling Cox to the majors and Cashman said in today's papers that Melancon could very well find himself in pinstripes this season after pitching very well in the minors, his arm injury isn't a concern. And like I said, there is still a chance that they make a deal for another arm.
Careful, youre outnumbered here with me, both nj's and fins.....maybe thats why this board is so bloody awesome
This is less about picking up Pudge and more about off loading Farny....same with picking up Marte (lefty out of pen) then acquiring Nady. It still comes down to Starting pitching so we will wait and see if the rotation can improve by getting Kennedy and Hughes back into the mix among other options. Yanks have the depth in the system for relief mix. Offloading Farnsworth and Hawkins and getting a warm body back for each is wonderful news. Anything else is gravy! -------------- other news: LaTroy Hawkins, RP NYY News: The New York Yankees traded reliever LaTroy Hawkins to the Houston Astros on Wednesday for minor league infielder Matt Cusick. New York also sent cash to the Astros as part of the deal. Hawkins signed a $3.75 million, one-year contract with the Yankees last offseason. ----------------- heck a bag of balls would have been fine!
