The Raiders will not have Gardner Minshew back in 2025. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Las Vegas has informed Minshew that he will be released when the new league year begins next week. Minshew, 28, signed a two-year deal with the Raiders last offseason. He appeared in 10 games for Las Vegas in 2024, with the club going 2-7 in his nine starts. Minshew completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 2,013 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions. While another team could swoop in and trade for Minshew before his release becomes official, the quarterback has $3.16 million in salary guarantees for 2025. The Raiders will save $6.34 million against the cap by releasing Minshew. A sixth-round pick in 2019, Minshew has started at least two games every season since he’s been in the league. In 59 appearances with 46 starts, Minshew has completed 63.3 percent of his throws for 11,950 yards with 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. Teams have gone 17-29 in his starts. The Raiders are expected to be active at the quarterback position in the coming weeks, with minority owner Tom Brady taking an active role. Las Vegas was in on Matthew Stafford before the veteran QB elected to stay with the Rams.
I think Minchew would be sufficient and a major improvement over what we had last year. But I want to be on record saying he's not "just like Tua". I'm sure a few of us around here will get the joke.
No. Draft someone in the mid rounds. If Tua goes down again, that's it. Time to start over. Maybe you catch lightning in a bottle with a rookie. I'm not watching another terrible veteran backup quarterback here collecting a paycheck and doing nothing memorable.
To my inexpert eye I see a lit of simularities between Minnshew and Tua. Both of them rely on timing, anticipation and awareness to get the job done. I'd rather have a backup that was the Tenu.com version of our starting QB than have someone with entireky different skillsets, or no visible skillset but a cheap salary (a la Skylar) Draft a groomable mid rounder fir sure but make sure we have someone on board the boat who can run it in an emergency
He can look so good for a game/quarter/minute, making really good decisions and throws, and then will throw a pass that is so bad you wait for the replay to see if his helmet was on backwards. I would never want him as a medium to longer term solution, but strictly as a backup? He’d be better than anyone we’ve had since Matt Moore. I’d still be looking at taking a developmental flier on someone in the fifth round if there’s anyone decent available.
Not overly excited about the idea of Minshew. To me he's just like the rest of them. I think we should look at the draft this year. I like some of the names that are projected to be available in the middle rounds. Obviously Tua is still the guy, but I'm with the rest of you on here when I say one more injury and we need to be done. If we're looking at free agents, I have Drew Lock at the top of my list. I also like Carson Wentz. For the draft I like Jalen Milroe, Dillon Gabriel, and Riley Leonard in the middle rounds. If one of them is available in rounds 4/5 you almost have to do it. Whether you support Tua or not, I think we're all in agreement that we can't be left out there with garbage replacements in the likelihood of a Tua injury. Love the talent Tua displays, but it's time to cover our asses.
That was clearly "Post of the Week' material! The Temu version does the same thing as the real deal, but it's made cheap and definitely won't last more than 1k reps. It sounds perfect for our current needs!
Minshew isn't the type of QB I want as the backup. As a temp guy on a bad, rebuilding team, he's fine. He's a lot like Ryan Fitzpatrick in that he'll make some plays but also take a lot of risks, and he's streaky and unreliable. That's not what I want as the backup on a playoff contender. I want someone who can step in and drive the bus effectively and get the ball into the hands of the guys that make plays. The much better option is Jimmy Garoppolo, who's proven that he can do that in this offense and has a history with McDaniel.
