Women in the history of the US

A fellow poster asked a favor and this is the results. There are many Women in our history, most are unknown to those outside their states, and time periods who have accomplished great things yet are little known. My idea here is for each posting member to acquaint the rest of us about those ladies from their individual states and their daring deeds. Before the day is thru I'll be back with someone who I feel fits the bill from Georgia, I have several in mind.

My first and easiest; A Lady I'm sure few if any of you have heard about yet someone who did much for her state and nation.

May I have the honor to present to you Helen Dortch - Longstreet.

From being college educated to marring a General who was twice her age to being a Rosie the Riveter at age 80 (being told that she was to old and had to leave-she didn't) with stops in between for politics, book writing, as well as righting many other wrongs of this world I would say this Lady lived a full and giving life.

Known as the “Fighting Lady,” Helen Dortch was a champion of causes ranging from the environment to civil rights. She put her heart, financial resources, persuasive words and spirit into righting the wrongs of the world and altered the lives of Georgia citizens through her efforts.

Helen traveled the state gain support but in 1913 she lost her battle but received recognition for the organization she founded to protect the area, the Tallulah Falls Conservation Association. Despite her calling Georgia Power and Railroad Company “commercial pirates and buccaneers,” the company leased 3,000 acres in 1992 to the State of Georgia to create the Tallulah Gorge State Park and returned the natural flows through the canyon. “She was a woman way ahead of her time,” said John Sell, a Georgia Power spokesman. “It’s appropriate to honor her.”

HMMM I can not think of any from Delaware right off the top of my head, so I will do a little research when I get some time and report back.

KATHERINE HARRIS, former Florida Secretary of State

As Secretary of State for the State of Florida, Harris was a central figure in the 2000 US presidential election in Florida. Harris certified that the Republican candidate, then-Texas Governor George W. Bush, had defeated the Democratic candidate, then-Vice President Al Gore, in the popular vote of Florida and thus certified the Republican slate of electors. The margin separating Bush from Gore was 537 votes. Harris ordered a halt after several recounts. Her ruling was challenged, and she prevailed in the first court of jurisdiction, and then overturned on appeal by the Florida Supreme Court.

That decision was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. In a per curiam decision, by a 7–2 vote, the Court in Bush v. Gore held that the Florida Supreme Court's method for recounting ballots was a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. By a 5–4 vote, the Court held that no alternative method could be established within the time limits set by the State of Florida. Three of the concurring justices also asserted that the Florida Supreme Court had violated Article II, § 1, cl. 2 of the Constitution, by misinterpreting Florida election law that had been enacted by the Florida Legislature.

The decision allowed Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris's previous certification of George W. Bush as the winner of Florida's electoral votes to stand. Florida's 25 electoral votes gave Bush, the Republican candidate, 271 electoral votes, defeating Democratic candidate Al Gore, who ended up with 266 electoral votes (with one D.C. elector abstaining).

Harris later wrote Center of the Storm, her own memoir of the 2000 election controversy.

I can't let Harris be the represenative of Florida here. May I introduce Marjory Stoneman Douglas, a woman who has done much more for the state of Florida than Katherine Harris...

Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890 – May 14, 1998) was an American journalist, writer, feminist, and environmentalist known for her staunch defense of the Florida Everglades against draining and development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, Douglas became a freelance writer, producing over a hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp; its impact has been compared to that of the influential 1962 book Silent Spring. Her books, stories, and journalism career brought her influence in Miami, which she used to advance her causes.
Even as a young woman Douglas was outspoken and politically conscious of many issues that included women's suffrage and civil rights. She was called upon to take a central role in the protection of the Everglades when she was 79 years old. For the remaining 29 years of her life she was "a relentless reporter and fearless crusader" for the natural preservation and restoration of the nature of South Florida.[1] Her tireless efforts earned her several variations of the nickname "Grande Dame of the Everglades"[2] as well as the hostility of agricultural and business interests looking to benefit from land development in Florida. Numerous awards were given to her, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was inducted into several halls of fame.
Douglas lived until age 108, working until nearly the end of her life for Everglades restoration. Upon her death, an obituary in The Independent in London stated, "In the history of the American environmental movement, there have been few more remarkable figures than Marjory Stoneman Douglas."[3]
