I purchased a Gateway laptop with Xp pro on it, it used to be a networked computer in a school, it still has the network Admin's name and pword on it.

I'm trying to find the Security program to change the firewall settings and to do things like turn off remote assistance and to exclude the fmr Admin from ever possibly accessing the laptop remotely.

But the Icon does not exist in either the Control Panel, or My Computer the way it normally appears.

Any ideas on how I can find it?

And I would just reformat it, but it does not have a CD drive, and it has old USB 1.1 ports, so I cannot simply install Linux on a thumb drive and boot and install from the USB port.

lick Start, Click Run and type "wscui.cpl" Click OK. If that doesn't work, then Security Center is likely either missing or corrupt.

    Thanks Reagan, no joy though.

Hmm...no CD drive, no bootable USB port the pcmcia ports do not work either...but I will have to format this thing, I simply do not trust it whatsoever.

Hmm...time to dust off the Dos boot disks, then the WFW 3.11 floppies...

That would be far to easy, there is no CD drive and the pcmcia ports no worky, just a floppy and a USB port and a Lpt1 port...and I do have the proper cable for laplink.

There are XP driver discs out there you could put on a USB drive. I have one with like 75,000 Xp drivers.

The issue is, the lappy won't boot from the USB 1.1 port newer machines allow it, not this antique...

I think I need a linux install that will work from a preinstalled thumb drive, access the thumb drive, and then it overwrites Xp.

Otherwise, it is the old fashion way, DOS boot disk, WFW 3.11, install a zip drive with the .CAB files installed from Win98 upgrade, then...

Or I think, maybe I could pull the hard drive out, format it then install Linux on it, then reinsert it and see what happens...

For an Administrator, you sure aren't adventuresome...Macs are for Hippies...:lol:

This is an interesting thing for me, I've messed with DOS on floppies, and Win98 on reformatted drives, and have installed Linux, but no CD drive and no USB boot and pcmcia support not working...this is a challenge...
