http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82acebfb/article/will-matt-moore-be-the-miami-dolphins-starter "Expected" "Expects" Hmm. Not really Ross's call anyhow, but FWIW.
To be honest, I don't care as long as Tannehill proves to be the future. Wouldn't mind winning the division though..........
lol yea, like that has any chance of happening with Moore or Garrard. regardless of who's under center, we're not making the playoffs this year, might as well start Tannehill right away, inexperienced QBs like Flacco and Sanchez started right away and neither of them knew the offense going into training camp like Tannehill does. plus his athleticism and mobility will help him escape the pocket when he doesn't know where to go or a play breaks down.
I expect Garrard to win if healthy. But it's a little unsettling how pretty much every non-Dolphin coach/executive in the league seems to tell Barry Jackson they assume it'll be Moore while saying unflattering things about Garrard.
Combination of them not being in attendance of our mini camps and how Moore finished the season? That isn't surprising. I thought Garrard was a token Vet signing until he started practicing so well (by most accounts).
I think it's surprising that a Pro Bowler like Garrard, a guy with one of the highest career passer ratings in NFL history (among qualified) is not more respected. I find that surprising.
I see. I discredited him the same way they did with him being away for a year with back problems. But really it's not like he set the world a fire with his passing yardage or TDs thrown.
I won't pretend to remember much about the Jags roster from a few years ago (other than the few names we saw during highlights). I don't mean to discredit Garrard, im just trying to see things from their point if view.
Let me refresh your memory: WR Mike Thomas WR Mike Sims-Walker WR Torry Holt (33 years old at the time, last year in the NFL) WR Ernest Wilford WR Dennis Northcutt WR Matt Jones WR Jerry Porter WR Reggie Williams You know what's impressive about that list? Ernest Wilford goes to Miami based on the production he had with Garrard, is AWFUL, never produces again. Dennis Northcutt averages nearly 600 yards his two years there, goes to Detroit and gets about 350 yards in his one year there before being booted from the league. Matt Jones actually had almost 650 receiving yards in 2006, and nearly 800 receiving yards in 2008. Matt Jones! Suffice it to say, never had a single catch worth of production anywhere else. In the 3 years Reggie Williams played with Garrard as the starter he averaged over 500 yards receiving a year and actually had a season where he caught 10 touchdowns and had people believing he might actually be worth a damn in the league. He never produced a single catch anywhere else in the NFL after 2008, his 5th year in the league. Torry Holt goes to Jacksonville at 33 years old, his career fastly collapsing as his production in St. Louis (the system and quarterback both of which he was familiar) went from 1200 yards and 7 TDs in 2007 to 800 yards and 3 TDs in 2008. He would only play one more year before hanging it up. You'd THINK his production would continue the collapse, in a new system with a new QB on a new team and basically on the precipice of retirement, but he still caught for 700+ yards. Mike Sims-Walker goes from 1400+ yards and 14 TDs in 2009 & 2010 with Garrard, to 150 yards in 2011 with the Jaguars and Rams combined. Mike Thomas is an impact rookie with 450 yards in 2009, then a promising WR with 800+ yards in 2010...and fast forward to 2012, people are talking about him being cut. Marcedes Lewis developed into a 700 yard, 10 TD tight end in 2010 with Garrard throwing the ball, fast forward to 2011 and he's got 460 yards and 0 TDs. Point being all these guys turned out to not be able to play on other teams, yet they had mediocre-looking production in Jacksonville with Garrard throwing the football. He should get a medal for playing the way he did with those guys. I'm not saying he'll do anything with the Dolphins, as it might be too late, and once again he's walking into a situation where the wide receivers aren't great...but it's also possible (sad as this is to say), that this could be the best wide receivers unit David Garrard has ever played with.
Nice post. Though now I'm imagining David Garrard being excited about our receiving core which is funny in itself.
Matt Moore will start...if Garrard gets hurt. Even at that, he starts for a few weeks and when we are hopelessly out of it Tannehill plays.
That certainly paints him in a bright light (no sarcasm). Here's hoping he does the same for us for 1 year until Tannehill is ready.
Thing with Garrard is he also played in the weak AFC South. That said, MMoore is the guy at the bar the hot chick wants to take home..he has to close the deal and tbh, I'm not sure he can.
Personally speaking I just want the best one to start. I have no problem if thats Moore or Garrard. I too am amazed at some of the things I have read/heard about David Garrard. Its like he got caught with his pants down or something. IMO, guy was a pretty decent QB until he hurt his back. But, like I said, whoever makes the team move, thats my guy.
It would be hot sh1t if Moore won the job, and had a lights out year making us decide whether to franchise him or not. I think he would be a better candidate for that than Matt Flynn was this offseason with regards to trade value. Wishful thinking, I know.
What would be awesome would be if after everyone considering him all but out of the QB race, Ryan Tannehill made a real genuine run at the job and won it...and I don't mean "won" it, I mean actually won it.
So much of THIS!!! I like where we sit in regards to our QB lineup. Any one of our vets could do a decent to good job right now, but Tannehill flat-out winning a QB competition would be awesome!
Sanchez didnt play all that well but he also didn't run Schottenheimer's offense for a couple years at SC.
I agree with most of the replies above.. I think Moore should be given another chance, but there's no way anyone can ignore the possibility of Garrard starting with his proven performance in the past. BUT, if Tannehill could really prove himself before the season and win the spot.. I'd actually have faith in some production this/next year. ckparrothead's opinion seems to be spot on. A weak AFC South or not, Garrard's proven to be good. Moore can be good. And the rookie shouldn't be ignored.
Matt Moore earned the starter spot after his season last year so I am all for Matt Moore to be a starter.
I am not that surprised. This league is a "show me" league. You miss one full season.....combined with being stuck in jacksonville your entire career, and you could be forgotten easily. I hope he takes it as opportunity to do what Omar alluded too earlier, to have a Pennington type of comeback season. I feel he will be our starter. I am not basing that on anything but my own thoughts. It all depends on training camp of course. But I wouldnt be surprised, and if he is, he might just surprise some people.
Nope, MMoore was effectively in his first yr as a starter, in the AFCE, Garrard is what he is and he did most of it vs AFCS teams. Like VYoung going from TN to Philly and getting to play and having his worst yr of his career.
and to be honest Padre, the afc east pass defense isnt that great. Chad Henne looked amazing against the Patriots pass D......everyone did....
Have to remember the end game here which is Ryan Tannehill developing into a stud and taking the QB job. The quicker that happens the better, really. I'm only for keeping him on the bench if he keeps sucking in practice.
