-Bowles- Has been a solid secondary coach for us and has experience under Nolan and as head coach would give us a chance for continuity with our players and Daboll. -Daboll- Gave us a 1,000 yd rusher in Bush & 1,000 yd receiver in Marshall. Something that we have NEVER had in Miami. It has been along time since we have had balance on offense in Miami.(Bush & Marshall seemed happy for a change playing in this system). He made great use of an unknown Matt Moore. He posted great numbers.(Another sign he knows how to utilize talent on his roster.) We were scoring alot of points and beating teams by a decent margin instead of squeaking out wins.(High octane offense). We scored a lot of points against the Patriots. Daboll's creative an unorthodox style works against the Patriots. Belichick knows how to beat traditional conservative offenses.(This is important because the road to the playoffs goes through New England in our division.) IMO these are all positive signs & are what fans are saying they want. All these factors(Utilizing players on the roster, balance, putting up points, happy players & team chemistry, etc.) are finally working in Miami and have been missing for a while. The only negative was we got off to a slow start in a new system with new players in a short offseason due to a lockout. Why self destruct ourselves?
I don't think Daboll did a very good job in regards to Moore. Moore made plays down the field, but too often they decided to put him in those circumstances by sitting him in the shotgun and under-blocking a play with linemen or linemen+Bush(Which might be worse). Moore is pretty mobile, we saw him in the Jets game throwing on the run to his left which a lot of guys can't do, yet he was stuck entirely in the pocket with little to no bootlegs and the like. We also didn't do a whole hell of a lot with play-action going deep, which seems like a big loss with the running game.
I don't get why Bowles considered a great defensive coach, considering our secondary, his supposed strong suit, has been the weakest part of our defense since his tenure here. Getting burned by TEs, big passing plays, and a low interception rate amongst our defensive backs. That said, I'd be willing to keep just for continuity sake on defense since Nolan is gone. But I'm not sold on him being a potentially great defensive coordinator with all our issues in the defensive backfield. Daboll on the other hand, not convinced he's a good offensive coordinator either and didn't like his signing last year after coaching an offense ranked worse than Dan Henning's atrocious offense here. Sure, Bush had a good season, but it took half the season for Daboll to figure out how to use him properly, when everyone else already knew how to utilize him. While the passing improved slightly and the playbook opened up, we still had problems with our WRs(Marshall) dropping passes and QBs turning it over. I have mixed feelings about Daboll, but wouldn't be upset if we kept him around for another year.
They need to look hard at retaining Daboll. I think the guy did a very good job with what he had to work with. As to Bowles, I don't know what is supposed to be so great about him either.
Because a new broom sweeps clean so to speak, I thought Daboll did a good job with what he had to work with, but new HC or even Bowles, may want their own OC As for Bowles, no track record of developing a Qb.
Perhaps those who think that Daboll and Bowles should be retained have forgotten that the Dolphins were 6-10 this past season and the HC who hired them is now the OC of the Jets. If the next HC wants to hire either of these coaches, fine. But the new HC should certainly not be forced to hire either of these coaches if he doesn't want to. I don't feel that Ross or Ireland should have any say over the coaching staff which the new HC puts together.
