I just read a VG post from Hugo, rating the QBs, which prompted this thread. My question is who is the best QB for this Dolphin team? You have to consider the age of the QB, the age of this team, and the fit with our surrounding players, as well as coaches. I am not talking about how great a QB is, just what he would be with our team. For example, how many QB's would you trade Heene for right now?
Firstly, I would only consider "young" QB (28 or younger) which shortens the list of potential candidates considerably. The first names that come to mind are Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Freeman. That said, I still think that Henne can be equal to or greater than Roethlisberger and Freeman. I don't think he can reach the Marino-like production that Rivers brings to the table.
I agree. There are not many QB's I would like to take for Henne, on this team. Other teams are a different story but, I could care less about them. Rivers would be one, Rogers another.
I have to believe you are talking about when the D is on the field, and Henne is resting. Otherwise, you are a funny guy.
I was trying to come up with a witty response, and then said Oh **** it, and cancelled my post out, then saw this... you summed up in 2 letters what I was taking 2 sentences to come up with. Anyways, back on topic. Someone like Roethlisberger would be good (minus the raping). He's like an upgraded version of Henne with his scrambling technique. Vince Young would probably be a great option too. In fact, I really think Vince young would probably be the most ideal person for this offense we're using right now. I'm hoping we see the style of this offense change some though. Our Offensive line is dictating where the strength of our game needs to be. They're just not getting it done as consistently for the run as they are the pass. From what I understand and have seen we're playing max protect a lot so that does key into it, but I think if we took the training wheels off of Henne, and gave him more targets out there he'd be able to pick it up. Anyways, point is I feel Henne is kind of chained down by the style of offense we're running. He's making strides towards the argument that this team can run off a pass first offense.
Taking into account the age of our team, I wouldn't trade Henne for anyone right now while he's improving weekly (considering what we'd have to give up to trade him for a player like Brees). I'd also like to see what he can do with his cannon when he has a consistent, reliable deep threat to utilize. Matt Ryan has the slight edge IMO, but he also has a year of extra playing time and had a soph season similar to what Henne's having now. Ryan's salary is MUCH higher and we'd have to give up picks for the trade, so I'll pass. I prefer Henne to Flacco, Sanchez, Freeman, Young, Cutler, Kolb, & Stafford. I can't say that Chad won't end up better than veterans Rodgers, Schaub, Eli, Romo, or Roethlisberger, so I wouldn't trade for them either. Rivers is a whiny baby; I don't want him. The only QB I would trade him for is Bradford....... but then again Sam was a #1 overall pick, costs more money, and we'd have to give up more to get him. If we resorted to the draft to replace Henne, we'd be lucky to get a guy who's any better as history has shown us (even if we use a top 5 pick). I don't wanna mess with success, and right now we could be 6-1 or 7-0 if our special teams didn't suck *** against the Jets & Pats or the refs didn't cost us the Steeler game. Our losses were against the 1st, 3rd, and 4th ranked teams, and 2 of those should've been wins. Then we beat GB, Minne, Cincy, and Buffalo on the road.
We've already salvaged the season! Duh. (Sorry, Marino's not on the bench). Get it through your thick head- Henne has done NOTHING to cause us to lose any of our 3 games. He had tremendous games vs NY and Pitt who are the 1st and 2nd ranked defenses!!!! He beat GB, Cincy, Buffalo, and Minne in their own back yard. There are 22 positions on this team!!....... 44 if you include special teams!! He doesn't play all of these!!! QB isn't the only position on the field. Duh. Please stop your baseless nonsense.
Pretty much the top 10 QBs in the league (Brady, Manning, Rivers, Brees, Schaub, Rodgers, etc). And I'm not knocking Henne when I say that (or at least not trying to).
Very nice run down, and agreed. If ya look at our team, and what Henne has done in 20 games, there are not really many who are a better fit. JMO
This thread went completely stupid after the first two posts (OP was fine), but recovered again. Be hard pressed to pass up Rivers, Brees Rothlisberger or Rodgers. Would be very easy to pass up E Manning, V Young, Freeman and Schaub. I think Freeman is overrated and Schaub benefits from a much better system and better receivers (but poorer pass protection).
Well, wouldn't go that far. IMO, Schaub and Matt Ryan are a little more mature than Henne, but not more talented. Schaub's numbers from his first 16 games probably aren't much better than Henne.
Anyone who would rather see Thigpen or Pennington in their as the starter has to be out of their mind. Pointless to start Pennington cause he isn't the future. Thigpen is a quality #2 in case but doesn't give you nearly the upside of Henne. Chad Henne gives us the best chance to win and is developing as we speak. It's a win/win and a no brainer.
I agree. There are QBs who are playing better right now..... but after factoring in age & time left in the league along with age of our team & Henne's continuous progression, it's hard for me to want to trade him for anyone outside of Bradford or Rodgers (b/c he's still only 26). IMO Henne is a leader and has what it takes to eventually take us to a SB. Considering Chad's only 25 and Eli's almost 30, Romo (30), Manning (34), Brady (33), Brees (31), Schaub (29), Roeth (28), Rivers (almost 29), I'd want Henne for an extra 3-9 years rather than prematurely resorting to the draft (rookie QB) when our team could still be in its prime...... especially after seeing how tough it is to get a quality QB like the 9 years post Marino have shown us. Most of these teams take the time to develop their young QBs so that they mean reap the rewards of their growth.
This has nothing to do with your post, but does anyone know if there are Pennington dolls/action figures?
I think Henne is the best QB on our roster. That said, if we could magically trade straight-up for another QB, I have a long list
Considering time left in the league and talent level, the only 2 guys I'd want are Rodgers and Bradford..... with Ryan being debatable. Whomever it would be would need to be one of the best young talents in the league so we'd be afforded their contribution for a long time. I want a QB who can develop and grow as our team is growing...... so that we all hit full stride together. The last thing I want is a QB who begins hitting his decline while our team is still at its pinnacle. JMO. Henne's one of the top 5 QBs drafted over the past 6 years IMO. There are a lot of teams in the league right now who'd be ecstatic to draft a QB in the 1st round with Chad's current ability and potential.
That would mean that Henne has some time to compare with the QB's mentioned. I am not saying he will be as good. I just don't know but, he is a KEEPER.
It sounds weird, but I'm actually enjoying seeing a QB go through his maturation and development process. It makes me appreciate what they do all the more b/c we were so used to Marino doing it from the get-go that many of us forgot what an NFL QBs progression is really like. Henne kind of brings us back down to reality IMO.
If we could magically trade Henne for any QB in the league? 1) Manning - hes getting older, but **** if he wouldn't make us instant SB favorite 2) Rivers/Rodgers - the second tier of talent 3) Schaub/Romo/Roethlisburger - talented but flawed (Ben can ascend to rank 3) 4) Freeman/Ryan/Flacco/Bradford - the debateable replacements for Henne, these are essentially his peers and the closest in terms of talent vs. experience imo. I left of Brady simply because it's not palatable, Sanchez as well, plus he sucks. Brees because his age, though I love the guy. Palmer is failing, Young is erratic, Vick is still untested this year. For the moment though I am quite comfortable with Henne leading the team, I think that he can be an upper tier QB given the chance, and he is CLEARLY the best QB on the roster. He has show big improvement in his last few games, but he still needs to get better at reads and making the right throw.
Definitely, it's rare to see guys come in and just look ready from the get-go. Marino did it, Manning did it, Bradford is doing it. Most other QBs take a bit of seasoning to reach an elite level.
I am REALLY enjoying the same with most of the team. Watching the progression of players like Henne, Langford, Wake, Davis, Long, Bess, Hartline, Smith, Clemons, Misi, Jerry, Soliai, Alama-Francis, and even the anticipated ones in Merling, Odrick, and Edds. For the most part, these guys came out of nowhere. Yeah, it is SPECIAL to watch them grow every week. Most of these guys are making their own reality. HOW THE HELL DOES ANY PHAN NOT LOVE THIS TEAM?
Do we really have posters on this board who think we would be better off with Thigpen? I always thought that was some sort of urban myth. Apparently they didn't watch "Thiggy" play this preseason and put up pretty piss poor numbers against 3rd and 4th team defenses.
Grass is always greener I guess. Some people just expect Marino 2.0 to poof into existence, and if a QB doesn't have it happen overnight, its time to discard them and bring in either an erratic turnover prone guy or a 50 year old who has an amputated stump instead of an arm.
An almost unbelievable true story. And here I believed that the only people who got REALLY STONED were BAD PEOPLE IN THE BIBLE. WRONG!!!
I agree 100%. I'd take only Rivers too but other than that forget it. Why bother. Now as far as Pennington goes... SURE. I'd want him to be the starter if Henne and Thigpen are hurt. Unless I knew 100% for SURE that his shoulder is healed and he's throwing at least at 2008 levels...hell no I dont want him in there at this point. Really, Henne has improved enough (which was a huge question at the beginning of this season) so far that he needs to play this year out. If he is still stuck in his ways next season, while the rest of the team is getting better, then we need to go ahead and seek a replacement. Right now, no. I think he has earned a few more shots at trying to win a shoot out with another team.
