19000 seems like a huge number. but Flu itself can kill anywhere between 10-40000 people in the US a year. resistant strains of bacteria is a huge problem. The bigger problem is all the major pharma companies have stopped working on new antibiotics to work against these new strains. Incredibly difficult targets to go after. and really only 1 or 2 new antibiotics have hit the market over the last 20+ years. The future is bleak. Of course it would help if the damn doctors would stop prescribing antibiotics to every hypochondriac that walked into their offices.
It also is not good that in many cases people don't finish their prescription - stopping when they feel better. This leads to the antibiotics killing off weaker strains and leaving the stronger ones to be passed around.
