ESPN just had their "quarterback tiers" project where they asked 35 anonymous NFL insiders to rank quarterbacks. I don't have insider so I can't see the whole list, but you can gather the rankings from several links:
    http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/172198/philip-rivers-ranks-no-7-in-qb-tiers-project
    http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/p...o-ranked-in-second-tier-of-qbs-in-espn-survey
    http://espn.go.com/blog/miami-dolphins/post/_/id/15838/is-ryan-tannehill-a-tier-3-quarterback

Tier 1: Rodgers, Brady, Luck, Roethlisberger, Peyton, Brees
Tier 2: Rivers, Wilson, Romo, Flacco, Ryan, Eli, Stafford, Newton
Tier 3: Tannehill, Kap, Smith, Dalton, among a bunch of others..

Newton moved up to tier 2 from tier 3, and Tannehill was near the top of tier 3, ranked at 17th overall. Flacco was ranked 10th overall. In any case, it's interesting to see what NFL insiders think.

I have insider for a few more days. Happy to answer any questions if anyone has them.

EDIT: After reading. Tannehill rated a 2.86, which means more people rated him as a tier 2 than a tier 3. Here are the definitions:

Excerpts from three of their 35 "experts". The first was typical BS nonsense involving the team's record and holding that against him. The others were more favorable, calling him a two with the ceiling to be a 1. Very positive things to say, but complain about his deep ball because, of course.

Are you sure 2.86 means more rated him a 2 than a 3? Instead of say .. rounding?

Based on ESPN's rankings, these are our opponents, to start the season:

    1. 29
    2. 27
    3. 31
    4. 32
    5. BYE
    6. 25
    7. 30

Yeah, we not only have a good chance to, but we better come out of the first half of the season with at least a 6-2 record. I can imagine such a record, even considering the competition, doing wonders for how the team plays later on. Confidence in oneself and in one's teammates is a valuable thing and that first half opponent list could help some stars align later on.

That's how I read it. ARod and Brady are rated as 1.0. Luck is 1.14. Big Ben 1.37. And then so on, until you get to Geno Smith at the bottom with a 4.29.

They explained that they tried to seperate them into fairly even tiers, even if there were more players in some than in others.

EDIT: No, after thinking about it, I'm wrong. I'm bad at math. Of course it means more voted him as a three.

Well, I'm asking because if you just round the numbers, 1.37 becomes a 1. I would predict that anything larger than 1.5 but less than 2.5 gets into the second tier. Is that true? For example, is Geno Smith a 4 or a 5?

I just find it hard to believe that if more "experts" voted a QB as 2nd tier than 3rd tier that they would put the QB in the 3rd tier. Again, you have the data, but it just sounds a bit fishy right now.

It is. Even to have a QB whos not in the bottom 10 in the league is a change, and to think RT is challenging for the top end. It was quite a drought.

Bill Barnwell from Grantland did his own version of the top 100 based on only football talent, here are the QBs that made the list:
    1. Rodgers
    2. Luck
    4. Brady
    5. Manning
    6. Romo
    8. Rivers
    9. Wilson
    22. Newton
    24. Roethlisberger
    26. Brees
    37. Matt Ryan
    44. Eli Manning
    49. Flacco
    68. Stafford
    76. Kaepernick
    77. Alex Smith

So 16 QBs make his top 100. Doesn't look bad to me except Newton, he should be more like 70th slotted between Flacco and Kaepernick somewhere. No way he's better than Roethlisberger or Brees.

I kind of have a major issue with Carson Palmer ahead of Ryan Tannehill. Like, a MAJOR issue. I actually had a podcast earlier this week where we debated this list. Naturally, I'm the guy yelling, "Carson Palmer!?!?"

Totally agree.. I posted that not because I agree with their ranking but because it's useful to see what NFL insiders think. Personally, I think there need to be more tiers than they included, and I'd definitely put Palmer < Tannehill.

It is interesting to see how these insiders think. While I agree with some, others baffle me. To me, it just shows some of the mishaps these guys have made in the past should be no surprise.

But who am I? I suppose my opinions and thoughts hold little merit.
