I personally give him credit for it. They were interested in Bess. They liked him. They signed him. An agent can't force an uninterested team to sign his client, least of all clients that are UDFAs and therefore have no leverage. What I mean there is, the agent for a Mike Wallace can essentially "force" a team's hand by offering his client to that team for the veteran's minimum, at which point 32 of 32 teams would say yes to the dress. But an agent for a UDFA can't do that. What's he gonna say, "I'll knock five grand off his signing bonus, how about it?"

Who knows. I would guess his administrative ability, which is likely the case for almost every GM candidate.

I think when people look at GMs, they tend to think its just about evaluating players, what positions are important, etc. There is a hell of a lot more to it IMO.

I think Ireland gets a massive re-education this offseason when an entirely NON-Parcellian coaching staff gives Jeff their season evals on the players on this roster.

Jeff will see things from perspectives he has never heard before. Ones from this century.

I've decided not to fault Ireland for having had a bad mentor.

This year he has a chance to begin learning what constitutes a good or bad player in modern MODERN football.

I've seen all I need to see to know where he's going to take us anywhere. The guy has a superior complex and NFL players genuinely seem to not like him.

It would seem like an easy decision to make yet how many times has a GM or coach gotten fired or quit because they can't work with the other guy.

Neutral. There are negatives, but there are positives as well. No one looks at the positives though when you're not winning, which is understandable.

This will be his last chance.

Trading for Tebow, signing Sanchez to a long term deal with guarunteed money just to pacify him and then not using Tebow in any meaninful fashion was a comedy of errors that goes beyond anything Ireland has done.

Well the Sanchez contract was actually about cap space. As for Mike Tannenbaum not using Tebow in a meaningful fashion, you mean as a pro-scout or mail room clerk?

Chad Henne, Pat White, Pat Turner, Shawn Murphy, Philip Merling, Clyde Gates, Michael Egnew.

Not to mention the people missed due to these picks.

Jerry for Graham. Misi and Odrick for Thomas or Gronkowski. I mean that's where you want to go with this?

Ireland in a nutshell: Trades up for the likes of Thomas and Miller, while the Redskins find Morris an hour away in the 6th, after trading a zillion picks for RG3.

I still hold my same beliefs as 3 years ago. All 3 (Ireland, Sparano, Parcells)deserve equal blame for these losing times and all 3 have no business being anywhere near this franchise. Somehow Ireland has convinced Ross that he shares no blame in this. I no longer care for Ireland's education as some have put it, I care more about Ross's education and hope that he wise's up before this franchise has to rebuild again. Unfortunately Philbin may be a casualty of Ross's education.

This is such a jaded viewpoint though. You can play this game with any team all day. How about all the other teams that passed on Gronkowski or Graham? It's unfair.

Jeff Ireland spent years as a scout for the NFL combine, KC Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys (before Parcells got there). If he doesn't know what constitutes a good or bad player in any era of football he should go back to being a ball boy.

Parcells mentored Jeff on being a GM, and all that entails. But it's not like Jeff has been suckling on Bill's teat since birth.

It's honestly just a response to the idea that Ireland is better than Tannenbaum because of Vernon Gholston as if we haven't had busts.

I gave him credit for signing, but not finding him. Jeff Ireland felt Lionel Dotson was a better choice than Bess.

If immediately after the draft they were on the phone with Bess' agent, sure, I'll give him a tiny bit more. But it wasn't. Bess' agent was on the phone calling Ireland.

Dotson over Bess. How much credit can you give him?

Big difference though. If those teams stocked their cupboard with good players, then sure, they get a pass. All teams that missed on Gronk or Graham and picked up nothing, like us, deserve scorn.

He was on the phone why? Why did he call Jeff Ireland of all people?

You take that chance for ... Dotson?

According to the agent they looked for teams that lacked WRs, didn't pick any WRs in the draft, and needed a punt returner. Miami topped the list.

Again, Ireland got lucky ... if Ireland recognized the talent he would have taken him in the 7th, not chance it competing for Bess with half of the league.

They may have liked Bess. But you can like 50 players you only get to draft 7.

    http://warriorquotes.wordpress.com/2008/12/03/

We have Bess today not because of some brilliant move by Ireland and Parcells. It's because our WR corps was so crappy, Bess best chance to make a team was the Dolphins. Kind of pathetic actually.

how many more 7-9 seasons will it take for some people to realize we have at the 7-9 mark for quite some time so I voted negative and I am not sold on Tannyhill at all but its a wait and see next year in case anyone hasnt noticed but Tannyhill isnt in the same disscusion as Luck , Wilson and RG 3 .

i kind of like the coaching staff but if the Bills and the jets pass us by next year then dolphin fans should be scorned for making excusses. I would be on the positive side if our holes were being filled instead of more holes created then I would vote the other way .

as for what ireland has done he has done nothing to improve this team . yea Tannyhill is our savior i would not bet that he will be our savior in fact i suspect Tannyhill could end up being worse then Chad Henne .

And you could take any GM in the league and find a similar move he made, while comparing it to a similarly better move some other GM made.

True. Interestingly enough what you can't find is another GM in this entire league who's team has lost more games than they've won for 4 straight seasons.

but hey, I guess you can say that makes us unique!

You only make that kind of move to save cap space with a guy you have 100% confidence is a long term solution. The fact that they tried to court Manning shows they didn't have that kind of faith in Sanchez. Yet they did the deal and now are stuck paying a guy $8 million that they benched.

Generally, positive...Not heavy in the positive range, but above neutral. Ross decided a year ago to keep Irish around, so you knew he was going to get 2-3 yrs from that point to get the job done. His draft was solid, but not spectacular. His FA was hampered by money and (I think) a grand plan that he, Philbin and Ross came up with to not build thru FA last year. He's stockpiled some picks and has some money to work with this year. This has to be the year he hits on all 8 cylinders. He has to judiciously re-sign some players to keep the core intact and then hit on a few bigger FAs as well as those 10 draft picks... The bottom line for me, is that he HAS to acquire some playmakers, both offensively and defensively this offseason. He can't settle for better players in lieu of some great players...

I voted positively. But really leaning more to the positive/neutral side. This is the make or break off season for him IMO. If we don't see significant improvement, I'll no longer support him. There is NO excuse this year.
