The Seekers were one of the last of the old fashioned Folk Groups. They came out of Australia in the mid-60's and are still together today. The lead singer, Judith Durham will become DAME Judith Durham, as she is in the New Year's honours this year put forward by the Australian Prime Minister to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (who is also Queen of Australia).

They have such a nice folksy harmony that will live forever in my heart.

This is The Seekers about 35 years later, singing thier rendition of Waltzing Matilda before the Aussie Rules Grand Final in 1993. For those that don't know, Waltzing Matilda is to Australians as "America the Beautiful" is to Americans or "Jerusalem" is to the English

 

The Lyrics for Waltzing Matilda are rich full of Australianisms....such as swagman, billabong, tucker bag, squatter, etc.

Swagman = a bum, or a wandering day worker
Waltzing Matilda = is not a dance or a person, but a walk in the woods
Coolibah Tree = a tree native to Australia, an aboriginal name
Billy = a pot that a swagman carries with him to make coffee and warm his meals
Billabong = a watering hole, small lake, originally an aborigine word
Jumbuck = Australian term for a male ram (sheep)
Tucker Bag = a bag that the swagman uses to carry all of his worldly possesions
Squatter = landowner or farmer
Trooper = lawman, provincial policeman

So the story of the song is about a day-worker bum, who stops at a small lake to rest and eat, and sees one of a farmer's sheep coming to take a drink. He kills the sheep and stuffs it in his bag for his next meal. The farmer sees him and calls the law to come with him and arrest the bum for stealing the sheep. Well the bum doesn't want to go to jail so he commits suicide by jumping in the lake and drowning. Now years and years later, his ghost still haunts the lake......
