I doubt Polian and Caldwell regret not bringing in leader, but I certainly believe they regret not bringing in talent these last few years. They certainly regret not having a viable backup QB. I can't really put their failure on team culture, I put it on Polian doing a terrible job the last few years at bringing in talent, and Caldwell being a figurehead head coach.

But more collapsed for the Colts last year than finding out they were talentless. The team quit. You can, and should, blame Caldwell for being a figurehead, but if there was a strong core of players on that team, they would not have quit before week 1. No one held each other accountable.

I doubt it would of made much of a difference. The talent level and coaching on that team was just that bad. I believe they would of went 1-15 even if some of those bad player doubled as good leaders.

Manning is great, Caldwell may have been terrible. But a team doesn't go 1-15 if players don't quit.

They do if they're bad enough. Not that it matters. If the players didn't quit, they were still at best a 3 win team, and would of still had the top pick.

Both winning and team culture should go hand in hand, and it's difficult to sustain one w/o the other b/c eventually a lack of winning can sour the culture, just as a lack of team culture will eventually sour the winning.

You acknowledge that a team doesn't quit, doesn't lose 15 games. That is my only point.

    Absolutely agree 100%.

The question that I obviously screwed up in asking then is: What has a MORE positive impact on the other? Do wins make a team culture stronger, or does a a strong team culture lead more directly to wins?

The Patriots have obviously had a long run without a losing season. They have credited their success to doing things a certain way and successfully bringing in malcontents who tow the line. The chicken or the egg question is did winning in 2001 build that team culture that lasted or did that team already have that culture before the 2001 winning team?

    Good question.
Considering that sustained winning is an end product of numerous factors [including team culture], I'd say it'd be difficult to do so w/o first establishing a proper culture.

To be clear, IMO, there isn't one specific type of proper team culture. IMO the type of culture [and its personality] should be paired to the coaching staff and their style & personality [especially the HC], as well as to the strength of the GM's talent assessment ability, and optimal team culture should result when all 3 [players, coaches, and GM] are in unison in this regard. To me, it's similar to matching the correct player to the correct offensive & defensive scheme.

So for me personally, I'd probably make team culture a very high priority, but I wouldn't go all out Naziism with it. I'd try and set one example first and then see how the rest of the team responds, namely the players who don't fit the culture and are in need of some adjusting. Perhaps they get the message, get with the program, and end up becoming a strong proponent of the culture. If they don't get the message, I'd make another example, and then reassess the team again.

Right, so with Philbin's emphasis on professionalism, Ireland should be locating players who show that, especially at quarterback. A Peyton Manning type would be ideal, someone who's so professional he can run the offense himself. Tannehill may have that potential.

Yup. he's definitely smart enough to, has the fire in him, loves putting in work in the film room, and is already showing some serious on-field leadership ability, no?

Thank you. I clearly botched my initial question. I started the thread on my phone while eating lunch in the west village, Manhattan. Women walking by with short skirts...

Can we restart the thread from your response? ;)

No that team still goes 1-15. The talent level and coaching was an abomination.

Lol, No worries, His'n. I'd be paying more attention to the short skirts, too..... especially since the cold weather is nearing and you won't see 'em for a while. :tongue2:

After watching this team I'm going to say having talent is by far the most important thing. God that was painful.

I think he's showing an earlier-than-normal command of the offense.

The Miami Heat, New England Patriots, and New York Yankees are the models that every team should aspire to emulate.

All three have a culture that has been cultivated through losing and winning. The culture is the one constant. THAT is what breeds winning, and most importantly EFFORT.

With Vontae gone, as well as earlier dismissals of B Marshall and C Johnson, it is clear what Philbin believes in.

The 2012 Dolphins are about establishing what Philbin views as a winning team culture. Wins will hopefully come later.
