It’s not that long of a video but it’s a GOOD breakdown on why the Dolphins defense has been struggling. Bottom line, Seiler’s not having the success he’s had while he was lined up with Campbell and Wilkins and the Dolphins are trying to be too cute with their schemes.
He's hard to listen 2 for me. But he has a lot of good information. Dropping Phillips into coverage 22.5% of the time when he's been a top win rate and hurry rate is insane. And Sieler getting double teamed over 61% of the time and triple teamed 7.5% of the time means they have to let him eat.
Well the thing with Sieler being double teamed all of the time where’s the rest of the defense? Good God Almighty, we blitz the 2nd most in the league and we’re the 2nd worst at getting pressure on the quarterback? That’s just plain unsat!!!!!
The Dolphins are blitzing more than any other team in the league and are dead last at pass rush rate. The scheme is broken.
Our secondary is the league's worst and a lot of the players Grier acquired either aren't good fits in Weaver's scheme or were last minute additions. I would expect improvement as players gel and get immersed in the scheme more, but the state of the secondary will limit anything we can do. We have to blitz and do weird things to try and compensate. It also doesn't help that the offense doesn't put us ahead of the curve much. Lastly, having 0 turnovers (again, see Secondary, State of) is a major issue.
Tex, the defense has been so terrible that the offense has to be PERFECT on every possession. That’s not possible. No one can realistically expect their offense to drive the ball down the field every possession and score. Sure, the offense is definitely having their issues this season, no argument about that but the defense is doing the offense no favors.
Not false. However when you have the league's worst secondary that makes it even more difficult because you know if you don't get home in 2-3 seconds, your cover guys are gonna get toasted. Additionally, to be blunt, Chubb and Phillips aren't showing much yet. They are clearly lacking explosion and get off right now. Chubb is putting up some OK counting stats but it's not from terrorizing the OL. I just hope we can trade him for something. I'm ready for Chop to be a full time starter over one of those guys frankly. And we are missing Campbell a lot more than we thought, but again Grier wanted to be a cheapskate with a valuable veteran who helped maximize Sieler. No coincidence he is struggling. It's not, and it's squarely at Grier's feet. I am comfortable in saying we have the worst secondary in the entire NFL. Further, a number of the players we do have either aren't good scheme fits for Weaver (Jack Jones) or arrived a heartbeat before the season started (Douglas). You aren't gonna have an elite defense when this is your MO, but the reality is that this defense is yet another in Grier's long list of failures.
Watching the tape Phillips is not the problem. His pressure rate is huge. But they have him dropping back into coverage 22% of the time. Your best pass rusher “statistically speaking” and you have him in pass coverage.WTF
