I seem to remember that Mike Mularkey was not a fan favorite when he was in Miami. I mean he was demoted to Tight Ends coach in one year. How does that happen?

My list in my lifetime is Norv Turner, Chan Gailey and Gary Stevens in whatever order. Then again, I could be playing the results, because those guys coached winning teams.

Similarly, I vote Jim Bates as best DC with George Hill as a close second.

How was Olivadotti worse than Vince Costello, other than being on the job for more years? Costello took over the vaunted No Name Defense after Arnsparger left. In the last three years under Arns, the defense allowed 174, 171, and 150 points. With the same talented roster to work with, under Costello in 1974, the defense allowed 216 points. All the defensive core players were totally livid after the sea of hands game in Oakland because of Costello's unimaginative and vanilla calls, especially on that final drive. Costello resigned as DC on the plane ride back to Miami. Olivadotti just didn't have much talent to work with in most seasons. It was trying to make chicken salad out of chicken manure most of the time. He wasn't anything great, but when he did have the players to work with, such as 1990 and 1992, he showed he could do ok. Even in his last season, 1995, the defense was 10th, which was higher ranking than the first two seasons under Jimmy Johnson, and higher in 3 of the 4 JJ seasons too.

In 1995 the defense was 16th.

Olivadotti was horrendous. The defense was unwatchable for most of his tenure. I don't know where he pulled those 2 seasons out of is ash in 90 and 92. But in '90 we got bounced out of the playoffs by the Bills 44-34 and in '92, once again the Bills knocked us out 29-10 in a AFC title game that the Bills ran the ball 48 times for almost 200 yds.

    So beyond that...

    1987 - 3rd worst defense in league
    1988 - 3rd worst
    1989 - 5th worst
    1991 - 4th worst
    1993 - 9th worst
    1994 - 10th worst
    1995 - 15th worst

In 6 of his 9 seasons, we had a bottom 10 worst defense in the league
3 of those 6 seasons were bottom 5

I admit, that I don't know the 70's teams that well. I became a fan in early 80's. I can't say for sure that he's worse than Costello and back it up, but Olivadotti really left an impression with me as a fan. I will never forget watching us get torched with that scheme of read and react. It really was horrible to watch. Almost painful. This all happened during an era that we had one of the best QBs in NFL history.

I really don't know anything about Costello but he must have been pretty bad for you to feel that way.

Meant to say 4 of those 6 seasons were bottom 5.

Depends if you go by yards allowed or points allowed. Miami was 10th in points allowed in 1995, and to me points are the bottom line, not yards.
