Stereotypes being perpetuated breeds more racism. The more racism, the less opportunities are afforded people who are being discriminated against. You also need to understand there's a difference between a joke and major symbol not meant for humor.
Ok Cletus. Stereotypes are not real. They are small views of a group that are then applied to the whole group. The problem is as those stereotypes are reinforced they cause huge swaths of people to be considered less than other groups. Racism is too important and leads to too many atrocities, to write this off as just a difference of opinion. This is about changing the perception that a group is less than the rest of us because of the color of their skin. There's a difference between a joke and naming a franchise the redskins. I make offensive remarks to friends all the time. And visa versa. That's what we do. But we all know we don't take offense to it. There's a difference then that, and me going on national television sprouting off the jokes. And then there's a difference between me just saying offensive things and not joking. Are you and aqua really trying to say the redskin name is a joke?

Why does it matter if it was intended as a badge of honor? It's not. End of story. Florida state named their team after a tribe to honor them. You don't honor a race by throwing a derogatory term at it. And with your PM exchanged I'd say FinD is right and I'll take it one step further you probably haven't been around other races very much either. And I don't mean a single black guy here and there or a single Hispanic etc.
