Also very possible Ireland wanted to see how he'd handle the question since it was probably inevitable that someone in the media would ask it if he didn't.

If it went down the way Trotter at SI reported it and that had come out immediately after, I don't think it would have received near the negative response.

But, as to the original point about Dez Bryant - the guy is a disaster at this point and just hasn't shown even the desire to change who he is - let alone recognize that as he came into the league he had a ton of changes to make.

Many of these who come into the league want / expect a clean slate - but they don't realize that if they have developed poor off-field behavior habits, these will continue to plague them unless they have the humility to recognize they are a mess (where everyone needs to be to change) and need help to change. It is a constant battle for everyone who develops bad habits but it is also a fundamental challenge if one doesn't think there is an issue; and because the decision-making "rules" of particular income classes often differ dramatically (they are thrust into a system with different expectations and "rules") and when those decisions are compounded with money - it is a much bigger challenge. However, if a player comes into the league and says, "You know, I bring a lot of baggage and need to change and get help" and reaches out to older players as mentors as well as the help the team or league can offer - he'll be much better served. In Bryant's case, his lack of humility about his own person is going to be his worst enemy. Be a confident diva on the field; fine. Off the field? Disaster.

I don't give a damn if his mother was a prostitute. If you respect the man sitting in front of you, you don't ask that. You can probe and prod, but you don't ask it that way.

Fact of the matter is, Ireland, the guy who asked it, apologized and said it was wrong for him to do so. So why are we still debating this? Almost everyone, including the guy who asked it, thought it was wrong.
