Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake appears to be all the way back from the torn Achilles tendon that ended his 2015 season in October. The Palm Beach Post reports that Wake was beating offensive linemen in 11-on-11 work. Although the Dolphins have been cautious about not letting Wake do everything that completely healthy players are doing, that appears to be just a precaution. Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph praised the way Wake has returned from a serious injury.
“[Wake] looked great,” Joseph said. “He looks explosive. Obviously, it’s still early on. He has not gone full, full speed, but he looked great.”

The Dolphins signed Wake to a two-year contract extension this offseason, so they appear confident that he’s going to be good to go. Last year Wake had seven sacks in seven games, so before the injury he was still looking like one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. The Dolphins think he’ll look that way again this year.

keep him as starter if hes 100 percent cam wake?.. or conserve reps for him to prolong his career and make him more effective in pass rush situations?

    where do you stand?

I'd love to limit snaps, and have him in there just to rush the passer in obvious passing situations.

If he has a great year this year then trade him. He's my favorite player but with his age and with only one year left on his deal, if you can get anything for him move him.

if hes 100 percent back why would you want to limit his playing time?

Bring on the plethora of ailments in the other leg if they let off the brakes and don't continue easing him back.

This is a great idea Res. That's what they should do and that's what they most likely will do. It's just smart. They were already subbing guys in and out on certain downs, but yeah, really try to preserve him especially for those obvious passing downs.

Use him like we used Trace Amstrong. Also remember how Trace Armstrong became much less effective as a pass rusher when injuries forced him into a full time starters role.

Trace had like 17 sacks i think which i think is crazy if you think about it. I feel like it is going to be all hands on deck this year on defense, and its going to take the Dline being better than average to make up for the lack of secondary experience.

Because, imo, his real asset to the team isn't anything to do with run defense, it's rushing the passer, which he's elite at. So, bring him in on obvious passing downs, and extend his career.

    Just my two cents.

I'm really worried about the D this year too.

Maybe Kiko Alonso returns to pre-injury forms
Maybe Mario Williams returns to pre Rex Ryan form
Maybe one of the young CBs step up to the next level
Maybe Byron Maxwell returns to his Seattle form
Maybe Jelani Jenkins becomes a good full time starter
Maybe Another DT on the roster plays well beside Suh

Not saying it's impossible but that's far too many 'maybes' for my liking,

I'm not so worried about Kiko and Mario but i think the safety spot is what i worry about more. I wish we would have signed Reggie Nelson when we had the chance Quddus I dont know to much about but the Lions Pass D was kinda bad last year so I don't know. Gonna defintley going to hit some rough spots this year and its going to be how they respond and weather they fold like they did last year ,when they had no shot and they knew it.

hey Pauly..sources say Kiko has exceeded expectations and looks lightning quick..he's played at a high level at the nfl level, he's healthy now, I don't see the concern because instincts and speed do not up and leave at his age..

Mario williams I'm sure will play hard because his character is on the line..no real concern there.

corner is mos def a concern, Im one who feels we should sign a started like leon hall or wait til late august cuts..

Maxwell should be at least steady in this scheme, he's able to press without worrying about in breaking routes, exactly what made him successful in seattle.

Jelani Jenkins played with crap on one side and sh## on the other last year..Kiko will allow him to play free..

Phiilips has gotten all the reps as starter in camp, and is highly talented and athletic..Mitchell is a good backup

We've got decent backups at both DE positions. Just sub him when he's gassed. I'd go series by series possibly. Let him get into a rythm while keeping him fresh.

you and I are on an island my friend, your literally the only other person that I have found that agrees with me..why do you want him to start when we can prolong his career and keep him fresh to do what he does best? is the question I keep getting.

Residue from the major groupthink era of situational pass rushers?

I'll go back to the artistry theme of some players. It's a bit herky jerky to go in on third downs only. You have to be able to set people up on countermoves. Plus, they can negate Wake by simply playing hurry up. It's really just that simple.

The way the media has reported how we play our defense, it seems like Wake won't be asked to defend the rush much anyway.

He was approaching Derrick Thomas-like production before he went down.

    Why the heck not?

I'm right there with you Pauly, I wrote an article called "Is Pat White Iffy? after drafting him, which was about White, but also about being iffy.

    Please excuse me if I change this to make a point, and I'm adding other points;

If Kiko Alonso returns to pre-injury forms
If Mario Williams returns to pre Rex Ryan form
If one of the young CBs step up to the next level
If Byron Maxwell returns to his Seattle form
If Jelani Jenkins becomes a good full time starter
If Another DT on the roster plays well beside Suh

    also;

    If wake returns to form
If Quddus is the real deal
If Gase is the real deal
If Joseph is the real deal

What happens most times, is that only some of these thing come to pass, but once in a while most will go one way or the other, and then the very rare, everything goes one way.

This D, and overall, the team, is way to iffy to get too excited about for me, but a lot of this will come clearer during TC and PS.

I disagree with the poster suggesting Miami should trade him. Yes, I understand, it's a business. But it's also someone's life. He's given everything any team would ask for in a player and more. He's a pro's pro. The least Miami can do is have him retire a Dolphin, and on his own terms. I do not think he will be a guy who continues playing if he doesn't think he can play at a high level. I think he will know when that day comes and do it appropriately. And when that day comes, it better be in an aqua and orange uniform.

How do you get that from what I wrote? LOL. I wouldn't say that the thing that Wake brings to the table is his run defense. He's gotten better at it, I wouldn't say he's a liability now, against the run, but he's variable because of his pass rush. He's older, and he's great at rushing the passer, so I say limit him to obvious passing situations, I'd you have other capable defenders to play on other downs. If you could extend his career by a couple seasons doing this, it would be a huge win.

deej, I know you're hell bent on having Wake "start" and be on the field for a majority of snaps, but it's not what's best for him or the team. The dude is a machine at rushing the passer. He's going to be out there on passing downs. We brought in guys who are better run defenders than Wake. That's no knock on Wake's run defense either. But Wake is older now, and coming off a major injury. This not only extends his career like resnor says, but it also keeps him fresh for 4th quarters when we need him the most.

Because, nothing I have said indicates that I think he's a liability. Run defense isn't his strong suit. He's a pass rush specialist. That's all I'm saying. He's older, and a pass rusher. I'd you have younger guys who can play on first and second down, let them. Unleash Wake to just rush the passer.
