after all the times the pats took guys that we cut and made them look like super stars, i welcome the chance to pay them back. ive always had a gut feeling that ocho would be a dolphin one day. he will give it his all to shut up the nay sayers. he will play with a chip on his shoulder since he had a bad year with the pats.

Well should be an interesting Hard Knocks if he is signed. Also our WR corps must be a sorry lot if were going after Ocho.

Some of you guys are saying he could actually get into the starting lineup. Guess our WR Corp really are that average.

Way I hear it, Ocho still has the tools he just was not capable of picking up the pats' offense.

I'm not opposed to having him in Miami, but do think there are better vet options on the mkt,

I am a little torn here. On one hand he had a good year before Cincy got rid of him, then he goes to NE, and barely gets on the field.
Its not a matter of physical talent, because we know he has it, its his drive.

Look at it this way .His agent has Dolphin ties, ochocinco wants to play for the Dolphins so his agent gets him a tryout.

That is all there is right now. This regime wants to get a book on him just in case our WRs disappoint or have injuries .By then Burress,Edwards ,Driver may not be available .

    Its just due diligence IMO

i'm all for having a look at any player, bring em' in an see what you see. ocho did not have a productive season with arguably the best qb in the league throwing him the ball, thats not comforting. i read here that he couldn't pick up the playbook and wonder why we should expect him to pick up our playbook. historically he is a distracting off field mess and could well be the same here,,, southbeach has some distractions. the guy is 34 and trending down in his career. i would say he really needs to show something to get a shot here. and even then i agree with ck, it is not a good sign for our existing core of receivers. if philbin thinks we need ocho over our developmental guys, our developmental guys aren't very good and thats a drag.

Either way it's an indictment of how the current group of wide receivers have been playing in OTAs. Joe Philbin has already alluded to his displeasure with them before, and now they're having OchoCinco try out for them. At best they don't sign Chad and they're trying to send the group a message to shape up or they'll be shipped out. At worst, they do sign Chad, and essentially one nameless wide receiver has already gotten himself cut because of the collective poor work of the group, it just so happens that wide receiver doesn't know who he is and the team doesn't know who he is either. But simple math dictates that with Chad on the roster, one less guy is going to make it.

New England runs a lot of "option" route stuff and is somewhat complicated with all the what if's. Chad had trouble getting it all. Which is why Brady wanted Branch back. Apparently Brady is very stubborn once he thinks you just don't get it and went elsewhere with the ball. Ocho still has the physical tools.

Even in New England, Chad had a reputation for still being able to beat man coverage. He had issues with the zone and with all the option reads involved in the offense. It wasn't just that, though. I mean there were plays he had to be told where to line up, and then he'd forget the snap count anyway...that kind of thing. Very weird, very concerning. But in Miami, Joe Philbin has talked multiple times about how their receivers need to be able to beat man coverage and catch the ball consistently, and has even said their offense is very simple to where he's told his players if you can count to three you can play in this offense. If that's Philbin's mindset, I could see how he believes Chad might be a fit here.

Nonetheless they wouldn't even be auditioning Chad if the younger receivers hadn't thoroughly stunk during OTAs.

Signing Chad instantly makes him the best WR on this team.
    That's troublesome.

You don't think we have a WR that could do better than 15 catches w/Tom Brady last year? That's troublesome.

You think Philbin wants a guy that has never learned a playbook in his entire nfl career? You think a guy like that could do well in a spread offense where timing is huge?

If we paid him the vet minimum for camp and gave him a chance I wouldn't be mad, just disappointed. lol

It's just a work out. I don't buy them signing him at all.

If there are issues with the WR pool I fully expect a trade (unless an acorn falls from the tree Pennington style) once were actually deeper into camp. Can't really tell crap off OTA's until the pads and hitting come into play.

    I didn't say that.
I said he'd instantly be the most talented WR on the team.
Smartest as far as learning the playbook? Probably not.
There are pros and cons to signing Chad Johnson. Personally, I sign him, invite him to camp and see what he has left.

The Patriots offense is far more complex than the one Philbin will run.
I'm just saying Chad would be the most talented WR on our roster if we signed him. Whether or not he is able to pick-up the offense and do anything with that talent is another story.
    It's worth finding out, IMO.

If the headline was "Dolphins name Ochocinco to their starting 11," I'd be surprised. But this is a tryout. The guy has averaged over a thousand yards over the last eleven seasons, and his last one was a statistical outlier with a new team and new quarterback. Why not try him out? It doesn't cost anything. Wake me if we sign him.

By the way, four pages in this thread and no one has used the "D" word yet.

That's actually a real good reason why Chad Johnson won't be signed. This regime doesn't like diva receivers. Why trade away a diva receiver in his prime only to turn around and sign another diva receiver. Only this one is older and not nearly as good.
    Seems counter-productive.

Chad was no diva last year.

BM was a nutcase, diva and a troublemaker. Chad is/was only a diva.

    Nutcase? Sure.
    Diva? absolutely.
Troublemaker? Still have never heard any concrete evidence to support he was a troublemaker while with the Dolphins.

And as far as Chad not being a diva last year, well, it's kinda hard to be a dive when you never see the field.
I imagine his playing time would go way up in Miami. Which means his divaness would also go way up.

    Well away from here
Aside from what was said, where Karl Dorrell wanted nothing to do with him anymore. He was diagnosed with a personality disorder, was stabbed by his wife, drew some ill timed and frankly stupid penalties during his time here. Such as throwing the ball in Cutler's face. There were issues.

He wasn't Cecil Collins by any means, but nor was anywhere near sainthood.

Being diagnosed with an illness hardly constitutes being a troublemaker.
Yeah he had some stupid penalties, but I'm not sure he was that much of a troublemaker.
My point remains, getting rid of Marshall because of his attitude only to turn around and sign Chad Johnson would seem a little odd to me.

Well, one thing to keep in mind is Cinci generally does not let productive Wr's leave cinci..Housh comes to mind.

i'm more interested is his catch ratio, does he drop passes historically speaking?

    Ocho after T.J. left Cincy:

    154 receptions, 2154 yards, 14 TDs.

    T.J. after he left Cincy:

    120 receptions, 1455 yards, 7 TDs.

I would say Ocho did just fine without having T.J. telling him where to line up, what the play was, or anything else.

Houzh's numbers don't mean anything. He's only in the conversation bc he said Chad never learned the Cincy playbook, which you can get away w/in some offenses, the spread not being one of them.

Chad's numbers look a lot better when you don't look at 2010 and the line of 67/831/4. Looks like a pretty significant drop-off to me.

    That and he's got tattoos.
