A little tribute to the brave men & women that fight for our country in the US Coast Guard. They are just as important as our other services, yet never seem to get the respect they deserve. Trust me folks, they are REAL military just like the other services. Semper Paratus ! Go Coasties ! I appreciate what the Coast Guard does but please, stop flying your helicopters less than 3 stories above my house after I finish raking the lawn!
I am an authority on the United States Life Saving Service, the precursor to today's Coast Guard. I am of the opinion that America has not produce any braver men then those that pushed off the beach in a winter storm to rescue shipwrecked seaman and their passengers. Our Keepers and their Surfmen have done extraordinary rescues at great personal risk. There is nothing more willing to kill you than an angry ocean, these men looked her in the eye and pushed off to save others. I hold them in the highest regard. An aside.. everyone has seen the "first" flight picture at Kitty Hawk of a Wright brother making mankind's first controlled powered flight.. A Surfman took the picture.
My dad was a preacher from the time he was 18, until he was about 22 years old. After that, he joined the Army, fought in Korea, and became a Drill Sargeant, for 12 years. Let me tell you, to this day, and he is now 77 years old, when he gets mad, you can hear the preacher and the drill sgt all at one time. My nephew joined the Army about 6 years ago, and just returned to the states from his 2nd tour in Iraq on the 21st of this month. He is stationed in Colorado right now, but the Army is transferring him to Ft Knox, Ky where he will be a AIT instructor. He will be teaching new recruits out of bootcamp how to handle chemical warfare, if I'm not mistaken. My father in law was a pilot for the Army AirForce in the Korean war, and he couldn't swim. I have the utmost respect for the Armed Forces, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and any I might have forgotten, and they all deserve all of our respects, as we would not have the freedoms we have, had it not been for these men and women fighting and dying for them.
