On 01APR45 US forces begain the attack on the Island of Okinawa. My uncle fought there, he was in the second wave of Marines landing on the south side of the Island. From what my mother told me, he only spoke of it once when he first came home, then never again speaking of the war. In fact, I did not even know he was a Marine myself until after I until after I had joined in 1991. This is a bloody battle that had a huge impact on the war with Japan. Most people will remember the image of the American flag being hosted up on Mt. Suribachi. On a side note: I realized that today’s date corresponds with the unit I deployed to Iraq with 4th BCT 1st squadron 9th Cavalry. 4/1/9. No relevant history, just something interesting I noticed.
Interesting stuff. I can't believe I didn't see this thread until now because any WWII info. out there I want to read it.
I just finished reading a 10 novel series called The Corp, by W.E.B. Griffin. It's fiction based on fact, beginning with the Marines based in China in 1939 all the way through Korea. It was a whirlwind read for me. Around 6500 pages in 2-1/2 weeks. I loved every page. Lots of facts given by the author, who was a former OSS member.
My Gramps was it the PTO and has never spoken of it. I wish he would, but even my father says that he never told anyone what he went through.
