padre31luxury_boxOPthey met for 6.5 hours today, and there seemed to be a deal in place for jim harbaugh to sign on as the 49ers’ next head coach.
All harbaugh had to do was sign the paper. But he told 49ers owner jed york and gm trent baalke that he had to at least listen to what miami owner steve ross had to offer.
And that’s about as close to harbaugh as the 49ers might ever get.
There are multiple reports that the dolphins are set to offer harbaugh a mind-bogglingly massive deal averaging $7m to $8m a year, which would possibly top bill belichick as the no. 1 deal among all nfl coaches.
Ross, who flew out from florida, is due to meet with harbaugh tomorrow morning.
The 49ers, according to an nfl source, are prepared to offer harbaugh about $5m per over five years.
And if harbaugh gets that mega-offer from miami, the source said, the 49ers are unlikely to go dollar-for-dollar and would be prepared to move on from harbaugh.
This should come to a head around noon tomorrow.
To that end, an nfl source indicated that york and baalke already have had initial discussions with fired denver coach josh mcdaniels. They’ve already interviewed raiders oc and presumed future hc hue jackson.
Other possible interviews: Rams oc pat shurmur, ny jets oc brian schottenheimer and former ravens coach brian billick.
None of those names will do much to placate most 49ers fans, who were eagerly anticipating the addition harbaugh, the hottest coaching commodity to hit the market in years.
York, after all, was the one who said money would be no object in hiring a coach to replace mike singletary and a new gm. He promoted baalke from within, and hoped that would set the stage for a harbaugh hiring.
If it’s baalke and not harbaugh… there will be reason for discontent, and one question should be asked: Shouldn’t york have known from the outset that harbaugh could get north of $6m per?
Pete carroll, harbaugh’s great rival, got more than $6m last year with seattle and many presumed that harbaugh would inevitably get a deal greater than that.
According to a source, everything went smoothly during the face-to-face discussions between harbaugh and the 49ers today. He and baalke meshed well and the money terms were being negotiated with agent david dunn.
Then harbaugh said he would talk to ross, and the 49ers heard that the dolphin offer could blow theirs away.
As always, there will be repercussions.

Well hopefully, if hired, he looks at Henne and says "aw hell no" and we get an actual Qb who..makes..plays..and stuff.
If Ross at least manages that, he will always wear a clown nose, but at least it is more than the last HC's have managed.

Been thinking the exact same thing.
Especially now with Ross getting on a plane to track Harbaugh down a-la Huizenga getting on his jet to go get Saban.
Regardless of the crazy outcome, the Saban hire was a no brainer.
He was a man among boys in the college coaching ranks.
Harbaugh is regarded that way by some as well although I admit I don't know a lot about him. I like his aggressive approach to football though so right there this excites me. Hell Harbaugh is even a bit of a prick just like Saban was. The few interviews and some of his comments I've seen he looks to be a real arsehat. If he brings a championship here though we'll all overlook that.
I applaud Ross for going after what he feels is a special coaching talent.
Those don't come along all that often.
If we get Harbaugh we'll live or die on the bet that he is just that.

Look at all the players we've talked about as fans, in regards to money. Now use that approach with getting Jim Harbaugh for that price--unknown.
It took one of, if not the greatest, HC in football multiple championships and a dynasty to lock up that kind of cash. And now we are going to give a guy who has done NOTHING the biggest deal.
I'm sorry. I can't get on board with that level of thinking. Even if he takes us to the playoffs, he isn't worth that cash. He needs to be better than Belicheck in mind.

It's a good bet he'd keep Henne. He's the only viable, NFL-caliber QB on the roster now.

While I agree with your questioning of such a large payday I'd add that everyone in Pro sports are overpaid today.
No one is worth the ridiculous amounts of money they are getting.
Having said that, If you feel a top coach can make just as much an impact as a star player as I do then you have to look at it differently.
Look at what some players are demanding in contracts yearly. Some play up to the money and a lot don't but they still demand the millions and get it.
Looking at it that way, 7 Million a year for what someone feels is a special coaching prospect just dosen't seem that much.

That's true. How do you see a coach? Tom Cable did a reasonably good job. And his players are firmly behind him.
