Actually, the Bengals didn't think that highly of the first pick... they had lowered the value from 3,000 to 2,000... given that.. they got what they wanted... I think it's a good deal for them because they pick up an extra second out of it essentially... NE moves up for the guy they wanted and weren't going to get at #5... and yes there is a certain team in the top five a tad scared at the moment... but they do have a fall back plan...

I think the picks within the top ten shouldn't go off the chart, I thought the deal was fair... I just found it interesting how lopsided it was according to the chart.

Did I mention I have five of the top 49 picks in the draft? More than any other team I believe (especially now that New England traded their second second, they were closest).

Alright, I thought I should sit down and explain the deal we made with the Patriots. If you've got a short attention span, you may as well just stop reading now.

Sure, if you're looking at the trade value chart, you might look at this trade and say "wow, the Bengals got hosed."

We obviously didn't look at it that way.

Let's backtrack first, and discuss why we originally moved to #1 overall. Quite simply, my Co-GM and I identified a player we felt, at the time, was head and shoulders above the rest. However, as free agency neared a close, we went back to our draft board and began reviewing our stack ranking - performing the due dilligence of any general manager - and began to question why we had rated ths player so highly.

As we evaluated more and more film, We quickly began to realize that there along the lines of 5 - and more like 6 or 7 - players that we could legitimately choose with the #1 overall pick. From our perspective, this meant that the #1 pick was really interchangeable with anything in the top 6 or 7. Look no further than our "Draft Help" poll - sure it was done tongue-in-cheek, but there are some good names there.

And so we began to pursue the option of moving the #1 overall pick, despite the fact that we had originally traded up to get it. Based on our secondary evaluations, we accepted a few things going in - that there was no way we'd be getting top pick value - 3000 points - for it. But if we could score Top 3 value for it - 2000 points - and acquire some extra picks or flexibility in the late first round and mid second round, we thought we should do it.

The draft value chart only tells half the story, and it doesn't take into account things like player evaluation. Quite honestly, we feel like there are 6 to 7 potential elite players in this draft, and a whole host of good-to-great players available late in round 1 and through round 2. It made sense for us, then, to jockey for position in the area we felt would give us the best value, which is what made the Patriots offer so tempting in the first place. We felt like (and feel like) the area from pick 20 of Round 1 to the end of Round 2 is the best area in terms of value. I know there are several other teams and general managers that feel this same way, which is why they've focused on acquiring picks in this general area.

For us the deal was made after the GM of the Patriots offered a 4th in exchange for our 6th and 7th (which, by the way, if you consult the chart, is a win for the Bengals, not that it matters), we felt we had a real good deal in place. And when you do the math - checking the value of the picks, and assuming #1 overall is worth 2000 points - then this trade is nearly perfectly balanced.

We move to the 5 spot and still get our choice of an elite player that will contribute for us. We move up 8 spots from the end of round 1, where there will be options to start a run on a position, or pick up someone that is falling. We now hold picks 55 and 57 in round 2, the area we feel is best in terms of value, and capping it off we get a late 4th rounder for picks that originally were going to be depth anyway. The Patriots move up to #1 overall and (trust me on this) get to select a player that otherwise wouldn't have been available to them at #5.

Regardless if you like the deal or not (and, despite my diatribe, I'd wager there are still some of you that feel like we got fleeced), we felt like it was an opportunity for us to really better the team - and the sacrifice of losing our guy at #1 overall will be made up with what we get at #5, #23, #55, and #119.

If it were a pay per yard, he'd be more than worth it.........:shifty:

Unfortunately, by that logic, you'd be sending a 1st rounder for Dexter Jackson. And I thought you were good at math. :pity: Chambers = 1/2 Bryant. You'll need to offer 2x value then from what Chambers was worth. That equates to a high 1st round pick.

Don't you have some corn to pick?

I like your analysis and when we made the deal, I thought it was a fair deal. My mindset was that there is only so much you can do to improve your team true 1 draft.

If you go into the draft and Expect to fill your starting roster with 5-6 rookies that you drafted in the first 2 rounds, it just wont happen.

With that in mind I decided to jump from 5 to 1.

In exchange, I move back 8 spots in the first round, I move from the lower mid second round to upper mid third round give up a 4th rounder

I also get to pick a few projects for depth in the 6th and 7th round wich I needed
