Terrel Davis to me was always the most dominant Running Back I've ever watched, he just rarely had negative plays, he always managed to fall forwards and to play with leverage. Another guy was Ernest Byner, he did have two costly playoff fumbles, but he just always found a way to move forwards and pick up 2 extra yds.
Oh, I get the point. I just disagree with the premise. I think that to be a complete back in the NFL you need to be able to do both. When I think of a 4 yard / breakaway guy the first name I think of is Bo Jackson. Earl Campbell would be second, though I would argue that Dickerson was more of a speed back than a guy who would truck defenders.
i'm with you on that. i prefer the guys that hit the hole right away and fall forward like you say compared to the dancers. at least from a strategic point of view. i would much rather have a 2nd and 8 if the hole isnt there then a 2 and 12. in the old days it was more important because playoff defenses could shut down the run. nowadays you get some crappy defenses so you can get away with the dancers. although facing a team like the steelers you better have a back that hits the hole right away. dancers will get killed against that type of defense
Both the stat and the final score are numbers. But the numbers person would ignore the final score to see who won the game? So they'd look at all other numbers bu not the final score.

Well, it is not that long runs are bad things, it is "ground sparano" is a different concept altogether, I'd be completely thrilled with Ricky or Ronnie breaking a 60 yd run for a TD (no pulled hammys please). From a strategic point of view, we need those 4 yd runs more. Bo Jackson was off the hook in techmo bowl..Marino was as well..
On a screen pass up the middle of the field which the DBs weren’t expecting because Henne was about to get sacked. That’s a different scenario than than the OL opening up a run lane, Ricky or Ronnie bursting through, juking out the secondary, and scoring unopposed.
Not Haynos, but Grove. Berger has not been cutting the mustard at Center this year. His run blocker rating according to Pro Football Focus this year has been a fraction of Grove's last year, even when he wasnt as good after the injury. Richie Incognito and Vernon Carey have also been only average as run blockers this year. Carey was good last year while Berger was excellent in a reserve and sometimes thats really what people are. Instead of forcing Berger in to a starting role and cutting cost by dumping Grove we should have kept the platoon. Ronnie and Ricky also look a step slower. Ricky was solid the other night but I see less swivel in their hips and Ricky isnt making defenders miss the way he can. We need reinforcement at RB. To be fair Young cannot pass the ball with any degree of consistent accuracy. The Titans are stuck with 7-8 in the box regularly.
This is not exactly a head line. People can blather on and on until their hearts are content about this being a "passing league" but unless your QB is Manning or Brady or Brees you need to run the damn football to win and we have not run the ball NEARLY enough lately.
In 2008 when we rushed for 25 or more times in a game we won every game...10 total games In 2009 something happened we rushed 25 or more times in 13 games we only won 6 of those games and loss 7 This season we ran 25 or more time in 2 games and won both Looks like we were outstanding in 2008 2009 not very good...and time will tell this season
IMO: Long, Smiley, Grove, Thomas, Carey>>>Long, Incognito, Berger, Jerry, Carey Problem was Smiley and Grove couldn't stay healthy, but IMO they where a better line.

I disagree Matt that Ronnie is a step slow..I know his weight is down, and ive seen the flashes of quickness, jmo. The article touched on what some of us have been talking about, the playcalling does not meet the philosophy of the head coach, and bottom line, imo, has been a little shady.. We need to be running the ball much more on first down, much more in good down and distance situations, and, when it's time to get physical, especially if you want to create that identity...I think Henning has a borderline obsession with being completely unpredictable, iam just not sure if that can become something bad...I sure as hell dont like what his version of being unpredictable is so far, I like the concept, but I think their are times in a game, {2nd and 2 in 4 down territory} that you live or die with the predictable because of the lower risk, the probability factor of conversion, the residual identity effects of the power run, the clock, and the specific skillsets you have to accomplish the goal...which in this case is 2 yards. I cant forgive him for 3 different situations...lol Sparano has played ronnie coming off injury the same for 3 years, 1st quarter of the season, rep count, after that, he needs to feed that mother grabber...20/25 touches a game..done
In 09, how many of those 25 carry games did the Defense fall apart in the second half? Colts and Saints come to mind. More Ground Sparano: Sparano pointing out that in his time here, in the wins they just run the ball more, which is why we can expect to see the return of Ground Sparano. And I agree with Boik, Berger has been mediocre at best, he is quick, but he does not consistently clear his man out of the hole. I'd be curious to see Richie Incognito at Center with McQuistan going to LG and JJ inserting at RG.
