Again they can easily absorb it and they got Cespedas out of it(who is cheap money).....the Sox aren't a small market team.....
But pay more when you could have gotten it for less? I guess it all depends on if/what they get from Cespedas this year and if they resign Lester.
Because for a few million more to get an impact player the likes of YC it is worth it.... Hearing SF did 5/90 for him...
Really up in the air on Pablo Sandoval on whether I want the Sox to sign him or not. Then again the last 3 seasons the Sox 3B have put up a line of .237/.288/.368.
It all depends on the years, I think he can be good for most of the contract because at the end he can just DH.....The guy can hit man especially in the playoffs and I think that's what is so attractive to the Sox about him...
As a Giants fan I would love Pablo back but not at 5yr/90m. So hopefully the BoSox wins out and I believe Pablo will do well there too. Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
Actually i see them going with Pablo ( if they sign him) 3b this year and having him replace Napoli for a year then Ortiz the year after. After this upcoming year i see them going with Cecchini at 3b... Just imo....
More likely the Sox stick Cecchini at 1st when/if Napoli leaves as Sandoval is a pretty good defensively 3B. Of course the Sox still have Allen Craig on the roster who is a forgotten man right now.
Deadline to add minor league players to the 40 man and thus avoid getting picked in the Rule 5 draft is today. Here's a look at the Sox minor leaguers most likely to be added: http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/bo...ted-to-be-added-to-40-man-roster-on-thursday/
The Rule 5 draft is probably the most confusing aspect of any sport that I follow. Even after reading the rules, I was still very foggy on it until I read an article earlier this year where someone broke it down in simple terms. My Cubbies only have one guy, pitcher CJ Edwards, that they need to add to protect and they have two spots free on the 40 man. Interested to see who other teams may let go.
Possibly one of the coolest articles I've read in awhile: http://grantland.com/features/mlb-transaction-trees/
Jose Molina designated for assignment. The nightmare is finally over. What awful decisions in the past few years at the catcher position.
Not sure how I feel about the trade. Peralta is done. Adam Liberatore, not sure if last year was for real but he was flat out dominate in AAA last year. Dominguez apparently throws triple digits. We will see.
Red Sox are signing both Hanley Ramirez for 5/90 and Pablo Sandoval for 5/105. Bring me Jon Lester and possibly Andrew Miller back then start the trading Ben. Hanley is expected to play LF so no I don't think this means the end of Bogaerts in Boston. I actually don't hate either contract. I mean Hanley is set to make 8 million more than Russell Martin and a QO is 15 million or so. Contracts are only going up with all the money teams are getting for TV deals and such. Sox needed offense and their line up looks like: Betts - RF Pedroia - 2B Ortiz - DH Hanley - LF Napoli - 1B Sandoval - 3B Bogaerts - SS Castillo - CF Vazquez - C With a bench of probably Holt, Craig, Nava and a back up catcher. Not bad.
You guys spending money like some other team I know hahahahah....looks like Baltimore's experiment with 1st place is over....
I don't really have an issue with the Sox trying to sign hitters. Offense is way down. I suspect they will use their trading chips for pitching help. Sox still have to make a lot more moves though.
Got to love the baseball social media age. Wish things weren't reported until the deal is final but unfortunately its more important to be the first to report it. So basically who the heck knows what's going on until the team officially announces it.
Hanley's deal is 4 years for 88 million with a vesting option for a 5th year at 22 million. Hanley called Ben Cherington and told him he watned to play for the Sox and he would play LF if need be.
Dont like the deal for Hanley - he's a a major injury risk. I also dont like him in the american league. But, hey, the sox are allowed to sign anyone and it's deemed gold. It ticks me off to no end that the Sox throw money at people, then trade them, then throw more money at people and the Yankees are known as the evil empire. Im not bitter, i like the competition.
Huh? Sox get killed whenever they sign players to big money deals too, all teams do. When the Sox signed Victorino the media was calling it the worst deal that offseason. Sox got killed for the Lackey deal, Crawford, Jonny Gomes etc. It's not just the Yankees. As far as Hanley goes, I think it's a good gamble. With offense way down they signed the best free agent hitter on the market to a 4 year deal and if he stays healthy and plays and produces it turns into a 5 year deal which ends when he's 36. Yeah he's been hurt the last 2 years but when he's on the field he produces (5.4 WAR in '13, 3.5 in '14 while playing suspect defense) and he's moving into a hitter's park now. I think he'll be fine in the AL, if he was a career NL pitcher moving to the AL yeah it could be a concern. I think the main thing with the Sox recent FA signings since 2011/2012 have been that while they might be slightly higher AAV they are shorter deals. I don't have a problem overpaying a player if you can get him for a year or 2 less.
Sandoval is getting 95 million over 5 years with a club option for a 6th year. Again like Hanley not a terrible contract.
Agreed, you can't look at dollar figures anymore, it's the years that are the killer. When Hanley's guaranteed contract is up he'll be 36, when Sandoval's contract is up he'll be 33. Sox are losing a lot of money off of their payroll next year with Napoli, Victorino, Cespedes leaving. The only guys they have signed past 2016 I believe are Pedroia, Castillo, Hanley and Sandoval.
Billy Beane once again making things interesting. Love the move to Toronto not so much for the A's but i dont know much about the prospects they are getting back.
Well, they were dealing from a surplus at 1b. Maybe saw it as a chance to get deeper elsewhere. When the Cubs were talking to teams about Shark before sending him to Oakland, Nolin was seen as a secondary peice from the Jays too.
Kind of disappointed that the Sox never got in on the Donaldson talks before signing Sandoval, although it wouldn't have helped the lack of LHH options in the line up. The Jays are going to hit a lot of HRs this year.
For Lawrie too, don't get me wrong could develop into something nice but thus far hasn't been good at all.....but yeah JD, JB, EE are going to be legittttttt....They don't have any pitcher though as I honestly think Stroman is their best pitcher...
