I think tonight is the season for the Sox, only because I strongly believe the Yanks will lose Wednesday, as they said it doesnt matter who the starting pitcher is, it is going to be a game pitched by the bullpen, and not the good ones either....so they are going to lose Wednesday..... If the Tampa wins tonight and the Sox lose.....like REALLY panic.....
The season for the Sox was last night, it's over and they aren't going to make the playoffs. They were coming off a very impressive comeback vs. the Yankees, riding an emotional high and can't even beat Baltimore with their best SP this year. It's over. I don't have any confidence in Bedard tonight nor do I have confidence in Lester on 3 days rest, especially since he's been pretty bad recently. I still can't grasp how they let this season slip away from them so quickly after playing very good baseball since the 2nd week of April. I personally don't think Francona or Theo's job should be on the line but I think the whole organization needs to look in the mirror and figure out what went wrong. The one thing I'm tired of is Theo's 1 year projects (Penny, Miller, Colon, Smoltz, Saito, Jenks, Cameron etc) just haven't worked out nor has his big FA signings (outside of JD Drew who yes has been a good player during the course of his contract minus this year obviously). Moves need to be made with this team that's for sure.
By the time pitchers and catchers report in mid February (whats that 4 1/2 months) you will have plenty of time to think about it and come up with a reason???
I didn't realize this was the offseason thread......baseball as quickly as it changes for the bad, does for the good... I get your feeling, because if I were a Sox fan I would feel the same way, hell I feel the same way about Miami....
BDH, you need to remain humble until they are done for good....2004 ALCS....... Cuz as you very well know, THAT team gets in, would you be at all surprised if they won the entire thing??
reverse pysch mumbo jumbo...please. I stated that I think the Saux will make the playoffs (rooting for 3 way WC tie)...but if Ray Fink needs to be comforted in his misery I am here to help him see the big picture and all the time he will have on his hands. thats what friends are for...he doesnt need to be patronized about his chances....go with the flow...he is on the ledge...I am simply stating the fall wont kill him....(some say its all about the impact with the ground).
I am not patronizing him.....I am giving him some reality.....he is delusional right now..... better?
Haha, hey I can take the heat so feel free to dish it out. This team had a historic collapse. How anyone can deny it would be insane. I'm a big boy and have taken plenty of abuse in my lifetime as a Sox fan. It just makes you appreciate 2004 and 2007 that much more because I don't think people truly realize how hard it is to win a WS. People talk about having big payrolls but they doesn't guarantee you a thing. I'm a pretty realistic fan, of course in my opinion, but I just don't think the Sox have enough in the tank to pull this out and even IF they force a one game playoff I wouldn't be confident in anyone pitching against Tampa Bay in Tampa, let alone Lackey on 3 days rest or Alfredo Aceves. It is baseball and stranger things have happened but I just think between the roll Tampa is on, as well as the pitchers they have going the next 2 games against an opponent who doesn't care (I don't blame the Yankees for 'laying down' by any means as their goal is Friday's game) compared to the state of the Red Sox are in, I don't think the Sox are going to make the playoffs. I don't think non Red Sox fans truly know how awful this team has been in September. They haven't won back to back games since Hurricane Irene. And they have only won 2 games where they didn't score under 12 runs. It's been historically awful.
I wasn't alive in 1978 so it has to be 2011 by default. But it's hard to see how 1978 could be worse than 2011 anyway. If the Sox don't make the playoffs it has to be one of the worst regular season chokes ever, if not the worst. I don't know do you think being up 9 games on Sept 1st worse than being up 7 games with 17 games to go ala the 2007 Mets?
these long preseasons (162 games sheesh!) are hard to keep up with. Now that the regular season is upon us I look forward to some good baseball. Really hoping someone can take the Phillies out
Eh, one of the few sports radio shows I bother with, Van Pelt and Ressillo, has "the pulse" segment featuring irate BoSox fans, if they blow this the segment tomorrow will be epic.
Can't wait for tomorrow! Most likely both AL and NL wild card will be tied so Red Sox, Rays, Cardinals and Braves all need to win! Can't wait!
still alive.
I hope someone is DVR'ing Mike and Mike this mornging....cause the song parody of Sweet Caroline is whats epic. Maybe someone with INSIDER can post the video or audio?? The guy singing captures the essence of Neil Diamond perfectly: "....Red Sox decline....Lose, Lose, Lose...the bad times are so bad - so bad - so bad!"
The Red Sox DO NOT want to start Lackey if there is a tie breaker.... I hate this about baseball, the trade deadline means nothing realistically...
Sure it does, Chen would still need to CLEAR Waivers....you think TB isnt watching it like a hawk? Its part of the gamesmenship. Its not a done deal or EASY way to acquire an arm in any stretch. Nothing to freak out over.
dude they would be trading for the person, not putting them on waivers/DFA, or outright letting someone go....so unless TB trades for the EXACT same people at the exact same time.....Boston will easily get who they want if they want to trade....And I am willing to bet Theo is putting false info out on who he wants....as to sneak in the pitcher he really does want... Imagine Wang coming in to save the Red Sox season....??
NO THEY CANT! Dude, the Non-Waiver TRADING deadline came and went.....all players have to CLEAR Waivers for a TRADE to be finalized. These snipets are speculating on the WHO...not commenting on the FACTs that any arm would need to CLEAR WAIVERS. Thats a fact.
Who would have the tie-breaker so to speak on that? Boston..........seeing they have the worse head to head record.....
Bruce Chen did clear waivers, I forgot but someone reported it. But shouldn't the bigger news be the Sox are trying to trade for a pitcher to pitch in a 1 game playoff. I mean how sad/sorry is that? Again it's always about the arms.
UPDATE: Ok, so he cleared, and now can be traded for...but that just confirms the process is in place, so he is fair game. It reeks of desperation, if they in fact make a trade to acquire a speculative arm....but so be it.
