I thought it had something to do with money being exchanged to the Marlins as well as draft pick compensation or something like that, because the commissioner always has to sign off on a deal where money is exchanged.
Ahhhhh yes it does seem that I remember something like that. Still it seemed at the time that Selig was favoring the Dodgers over the Marlins and it made quite a few Marlins fans very P'Od.
Personally I think not having any of those ESPN Sunday night games is an advantage for them as the players hate starting games that late as usually Sunday is a traveling day so teams don't get into the next city until well after midnight. Also it does suck they're not scheduled for any games, you'd think they could match up well against any of the NL East teams (minus Washington) and would be a pretty good game. My question to those big shot executives would be: You mean teams like Washington, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Kansas City, San Diego, San Fran, Texas, Houston, Colorado and Baltimore are more exciting teams than Florida? Please. Florida has one of the best baseball players in the game in Hanley Ramirez (as well as other talent). If he was playing in New York, Boston, Chicago or LA the guy would be the face of the sport right now.
While I'm sure Selig and the MLB front office would rather have a big name player going to a big market like LA than FL, I doubt Selig rejected the Boston/Pitts/FL deal for the hell of it, it had to be due to the money/draft issue. If he just rejected the deal to reject it, you'd think FL's FO would try to sue or something. Personally I think FL was better off not making that deal in retrospect.
He rejected it because we were receiving an extra 2 million to pay for the signing bonus' of the two comp picks.
Not even that. The cash was fine with Selig. He rejected the trade because he said that the Marlins had to get a player back, not two draft choices. Blast from the past:
I think if Ramirez had been open to signing a new contract with us, it would have been a great deal. Certainly would have landed us in the playoffs. Either way, ancient history now. Jeremy K. Hermida is still on the team.
Marlins 9, Twins 5 - Late rally bags game for the Marlins Bonifacio's big day, late rally do deed MARLINS 9, TWINS 5 at Fort Myers, Fla. Saturday, March 14 Twins at the plate: Michael Cuddyer belted his first home run of the spring, a solo shot to left field in the second inning. Matt Tolbert added an RBI single in the second, and Carlos Gomez drove in another run that inning with a bases-loaded groundout. Gomez then tripled to center field in the fifth and scored on Alexi Casilla's double to right. Marlins at the plate: Emilio Bonifacio hit a double down the third-base line on a slug bunt in the first, but the Marlins were scoreless until the seventh -- where they broke out with a late rally. Bonifacio's two-run double to right got things started, and Robert Andino added another two-run double to make it a one-run ballgame. The Marlins then took the lead in the eighth with the aid of an RBI single by Bonifacio and heads-up baserunning by Manuel Mayorson. Twins on the mound: Right-hander Kevin Slowey pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Slowey struck out five in his outing and walked one. Matt Guerrier and Joe Nathan each pitched a scoreless inning. Jose Mijares made his return to the mound after missing a week due to a groin injury and gave up four runs on three hits. The left-hander, who is competing for a bullpen spot, walked two and hit one batter. He now has seven walks in 4 1/3 innings this spring. Marlins on the mound: Southpaw Andrew Miller allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits over his four innings. Miller walked three, struck out two and brought his ERA this spring to 10.57. Leo Nunez pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits. Grapefruit League records: Twins 8-5; Marlins 6-7
But I don't get it, why is that out of bounds ? If the two teams agree to it, why does he nix that deal ? It sounds like the Marlins were being smart.
Maybe he does what he supposed to do this year, maybe the "man of so much promise" finally delivers this year.
We'll see. I'm not holding my breath on K. Anyone want to guess who the opening day pitcher will be? I say Miller. Posted via Mobile Device
Nolasco as the 1 would be impressive. Still, we need Miller to come along, and winning the opening day job would be great. Good news regarding the stadium. If money is the only issue, then Selig needs to pull his hands out of Boston's pants and pony up some dough. Posted via Mobile Device
I agree. But hes been getting smacked around in spring. Dont think he'll be your Opening Day starter in 2009.
Josh I think they said will not be, but start the 4th game. I don't know why that is, but at this point, its anyone's guess.....best guess would have to be Miller too. Is anyone else getting ansty about the youth of our SP lineup ? Where is the veteran to stableize us ?
Yeah it would only be fair to the Marlins to get the same kind of loans that he has given to others, most notably the D'Backs.
Yeah, I'm starting to agree with you, Mainge. I took a look at his numbers so far, not good. Nolasco looks like a better bet. Maybin needs to pan out for us, right now I'm starting to think we got ripped off in the Cabrera trade.
Just heard a blurb on the radio that as part of the stadium deal, the Marlins are rewriting an agreement with the NAACP to give 15% of stadium revenues to minority-owned business. This is the kind of stuff we have to resort to in order to get a yes vote from the city?
Now the Marlins are saying they won't honor the contracts with the set asides, so who knows what will happen. Its gonna be interesting come Thursday.
This is so ridiculous. The commission has voted HOW many times to get the stadium passed? Four, now? I've lost count. It's never happening. The NL East will have four teams by 2015.
This seems to be an alternative to the NAACP contract without the racial legal wording. From CrimsonCane, a very respected member on a Marlins message board: __________________
So this is indeed the fourth vote. What stupidity. The City of Miami is a freaking banana republic. (Yeah, I'm annoyed.)
So far this morning, no vote but lots of talk. I would expect a vote at the City commision by 4pm. Looks like Sarnoff and Regelado will definately say no.....so that means the other 3 have to say yes or the stadium is dead.
Last Night : Marlins 7, Nationals 5 - Olsen pitches against Marlins for the 1st time The Marlins led 7-1 after beating up on Scott Olsen but only held on for a 7-5 victory after Sanches almost loses it with a 1/3 of an inning in which he gave up 4 ER and 6 hits before being replaced by Henry Owens who looked superb and got the save. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090318&content_id=4014542&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=fla
