Shula was beat by the Namath led Jets. Of course he is going to hype him up.

No one is trying to say that Namath should have stats comparable to QB's in 2005. They mention that Namath was the first to throw for 4000 yards, they failed to mention that he also threw 28 INT's that same year and more INT's than TD's that year also. 7 of his 12 years he completed less than 50% of his passes. His career completion % is 50. He threw nearly 50 more INT's than TD's over his career. He led the league 4 out of his 12 years in INT's, but only once for TD's. In 10 of his 12 years he threw more INT's than TD's.

I've watched a lot of Namath's games, he did LOOK good when he threw the ball. And he was probably a pretty smart guy. However, even when he was healthy he threw a lot of INT's and didn't complete a lot of his throws.

IMO, and like I wrote before, he's not the worst QB to have ever played, but he is not HoF caliber either. The only reason he got in was because of his ONE season and the fact that he changed the way NFL players were looked at.

The jest are better then us. That's a fact. It's sucks to say it, but we have to face it. They have better coaches, better players, better game plans.

Like I said - I never saw him play. And since you state that you did, I will listen to your opinion. But please understand that sometimes what you write is hard to accept and I will give you an example. In your "Defense Wins Championships" post you posted your evaluation of the SB winning QB's. I called you on your Tom Brady being average evaluation and thankfully you changed that. But here is what you also stated.

Namath and Dilfer are both crap QB's. Yes - you have Namath and Dilfer listed as the only "crap" QB's.

And assuming that "below average" and "average" are both a better rating than "crap", here is your list of some of the QB's that are/were better than Namath:

    Brad Johnson
    Mark Rypien
    Jeff Hostetler
    Doug Williams
    Jim McMahon
    Eli Manning

Again - I didn't see Namath play, but I think you would get a fair bit of argument out of people who did when you state that those QB's were better. Then again, this is a Miami forum so maybe not. But I have to say that I find it very hard to believe that those QB's were better.

I didn't go through all the SB winning QB's and label them. I just picked a few at random.

"Below average" and "crap", to me, are the same thing. When I think about Namath I can't help but think that he's so overrated and thus use more colorful words for guys like him. Dilfer too. When I listen to Dilfer talk nowadays you'd think that he carried that Ravens team to the Super Bowl and won the game for them. Even though he only started 8 games that season.

The facts about Namath are, he wouldn't be considered a HoF QB if not for his "guarantee" or fur coats or panty hose commercials. Again, he was the first NFL player to "get paid" and was brash. Nothing more. He's known more for his off the field antics than he is for his on the field play...sans the 1969 Super Bowl. And even then people remember his talk before the game more than they remember his play during.

OK. But to most people, "crap" is worse than "below average". So you think Namanth is on par with Dilfer, Johnson, Williams, etc. It's your opinion and I am not going to argue with you. Honestly, I really don't care one way or the other. I didn't see him play, nor did I follow the Jets as a kid. His place in NFL history is irrelevant to me as a fan.

I did see Ken O'Brien play a lot. In person. He was a career 58.6% passer, threw more TD's than INT's, and had a career QBR of 80.4. Would you say he was better than Namath?

Funny...you take Marine's word for it but say I was nine. I'm willing to bet I'm around the same age or older than he is. ;)

For your info, I watched the game with my family and understood what was going on. Just because at 9 you couldn't grasp it, don't think we all were the same. ;)

And he played with the Jets until '76. I was 15 then. Is that old enough for you?

    Yes.

I was 2 when Namath played in SBIII and I am not sure how many 2 year olds can grasp football at that age :)

And when you were a teen, Namath was a shell of what he was before his injuries. Namath's "prime" (before injuries) was 1965 (AFL Rookie of the Year) - 1970 at which time you were 4 - 9 years old.

You are right about Marine. I didn't bother asking him how old he was because there is no winning an argument with him anyway. It's like arguing with a brick wall.

So Ken O'Brien was a better QB than Namath. I never knew that. I liked O'Brien and had he had a decent OLine, he would have been so much better. He threw a great deep ball and was extremely accurate. His duals with Marino were epic.

I never understood the disrespect for O'Brien. I always thought he was one of the best QBs you guys ever had, but no one talks about him with any praise.

A lot of Jets fans I know liked him. Coslet didn't and wanted his boy, Boomer, who was no better.

In my years as a Jets fan the main QB's I have watched are:

    O'Brien
    Boomer
    Nagle
    Foley
    O'Donnel
    Testeverde
    Pennington
    Clemmens
    Favre
    Sanchez

Testeverde and O'Brien had the best single seasons during that time. Aside from injuries, Pennington has the best career with O'Brien a very close second.

I have only seen highlights and the replay of that superbowl(which he played like *** in) and there are the words of those who saw him play and said he was overrated.
His stats were not impressive, but neither were Greise's.

Its because they passed on God Incarnate:

The Jets are going to choke like always. I actually wanted the Jets to win over the Patriots since I want both teams out.
