Because I don't believe the jury should still be out. After a full season you have enough information to make a somewhat informed assessment. That doesn't mean they should be finished products. But there are expectations of where they should be after this season. They either have met those expectations or they haven't. Just simply waiting to see how people turn out paralyzes an organization.
That also applies to waiting to see how a GM turns out. The same GM that is on his second rebuild. I'd argue Jeff Ireland has paralyzed this franchise more than any player ever has.
I generally agree that people are far too "patience" oriented, however I think making this kind of judgment after one year is nuts. Anyone who says they knew Aaron Rodgers would be great after his first year or that Chad Henne would be a bust after his first year, IMO is full of crap. Anyone who says they could tell Bill Parcells would be a Hall of Fame coach after his first year with the Giants is also full of crap.
Right. I don't think anyone has said let's wait and see how Ireland turns out. I think his record is pretty clear. The issue is assessing his record in relation to what is expected of a generic NFL GM.
Why does it have to be an either/or thing? Why cant Tannehill be somewhat to blame, as well as the team faltering around him? B/c the team IS faltering around him... but that doesnt excuse his own personal mistakes. For example, the secondary is playing GOD AWFUL... and that is completely unrelated to Tannehill.
What kind of judgement? You don't need to make a grand judgement of what Tannehill's career will be. Its important for any organization - sports or otherwise - to establish goals and expectations for everyone in that organization. Neither Ryan Tannehill nor Joe Philbin aren't precluded from that IMO.
You're the one that said that if you hit on your head coach and quarterback then you're golden. So pick teams that you feel have hit on those two and then make your judgment whether Tannehill/Philbin belong in that group after their first year. Guarantee you can't do it.
That's the problem here, IMO. You don't need to do that, but even if you did, Ross would still be more than justified in firing him this offseason.
I guarantee that 99.99% of people can't do it. Thats why there are only ~5 people in the entire world that can make the claim they are great NFL GMs.
I think the overwhelming majority of people that don't want Ireland fired believe his record is good enough to keep him, not that his record is TBD. Then again, I have a lot of people on ignore, so I could be wrong.
How many more losing seasons will be enough for those that support Ireland? This is a honest question...I really want to know.
Flacco/Harbaugh, Roethlisberger/Tomlin, Manning/Coughlin, Manning/Fox, Schaub/Kubiak, Brady/Belehick, Ryan/Smith, Rodgers/McCarthy. Stafford/Schwartz. Then you have Freeman/Schiano that seems to be working out pretty well, along with RG3 and Shanny and Luck/Pagano (though I know Pagano hasn't been there due to his illness). EDITED TO ADD: Not sure where you get 5 people.
His effectiveness is limited by the fact Miami has to have him as a primary blocker imo ... which is indicative of the talent and production of the Oline.
Sherman also said today that Egnew is too far behind to help the Dolphins this season. So chalk up another winner for Ireland. A 3rd round pick who is likely to be INACTIVE an entire season. Simply ridiculous
Which is amazing, especially when you consider what Jimmy Graham did in his first year in New Orleans. The same Jimmy Graham who, you know, only played football for ONE YEAR in college. It sounds like Egnew just isn't very bright.
Maybe he's not that bright, but jeez, "Egnew, run really fast down the seam and try and catch the ball if Tanny throws it to you." How hard is that? We can't at least try it once this season?
It's disappointing but not surprising. It happens. Jermichael Finley barely played his rookie season.
Or that these coaches can't be trusted to make a sound decision on who plays and who does not. (*cough* Naanee *cough*)
I mean, I see both sides of it. On one hand, he's a 3rd round pick and your team isn't very good, so like you say, put him out there and see what he can do, because otherwise you should just cut his ***. On the other, maybe there is some talent there, he's just a really dumb, immature guy who isn't grasping the offense and the coaches think he'd actually be a detriment to the offense. While I find the latter hard to believe, I guess it's possible. I can say that given the recent play of Fasano, rotating Egnew wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. At least then you could get him some experience, and who knows, maybe he provides a spark. Rishard Matthews certainly made the most of his brief chance the other night.
Mike Sherman every day looking less and less like the guy who tutored Ryan Tannehill into an NFL prospect, and more and more like the guy who passed over Ryan Tannehill for the starting job not once, but twice.
Well, I certainly wouldn't put Kubiak, Shanahan, or Schwartz in there. Either way, I don't think that matters. Just take that list of QBs and that list of coaches. After the season, ask if Tannehill's and Philbin's performance this season leads you to believe they are on a path to making that list. If the answer is no, then Ireland should be fired.
Option C, yeah. Egnew clearly got off on the wrong foot with this staff, namely Sherman, who might not have just been trying to light a fire under him when he said he'd cut his *** during Hard Knocks. Not sure what he can show them in practice now that he hasn't already though. I dunno.
I don't think you can look at that in a vacuum though. I think there are other factors, clearly seen through 10 games, that warrants his firing regardless of what you just mentioned.
Finley was at least active every game he was healthy during his rookie year and contributed on special teams. Egnew apparently can't even be trusted to do that.
Flacco and Schaub aren't on the "great" level. Both of their successes are largely contributed to great RBs and Defenses. Stafford doesn't look so great either, and Ryan is about to define his career one way or another once the playoffs start.
They're franchise QB's. Are the elite? Probably not, but both guys give their teams a chance to win every week. Yes, they also happen to have great players around them. That's what a good GM does. So you're kind of making my own point for me by pointing out the overall talent on their teams.
Just saying, both of their GMs made those teams great more so through their RBs and Defenses and not because they hitched themselves to a great QB who carried them.
I don't know if I subscribe to that theory completely. All those teams you mentioned have pretty solid foundations. Yes, their defenses are solid, and yes, they have solid running games, but you're not going to win if you're QB isn't playing well. That's a fact. It's not like either of those guys are putting up Jay Fiedler type numbers.
I have to share this because it's too freaking perfect. So the folks at Panini (I honestly don't know who they are) had NFL rookies this year conduct an experiment. Instead of signing their rookie cards, they gave them blank white cards and markers and told them to draw their own card. These drawings would be randomly inserted in card packs and so if you find one it's supposed to be a collector's item. As you can imagine, hilarity ensued across the league. To the point, my buddy Vinbob (ever the collector of weird stuff, especially Dolphins weird stuff) found someone selling the Michael Egnew sketch card on Ebay and bought it. Michael Egnew, best known on Hard Knocks for his generally dumbfounded look, blank stares, obvious iPad password, getting his **** ripped apart by Mike Sherman, and tight end coach Dan Campbell's greatest line ever, "Freaking Egnew (/total disgust)"...drew the following sketch card. That's actually my hand holding up the sketch card a couple of weeks ago at Vince's house when we were watching the Jets trouncing together (the day after my wedding). This thing truly exists.
That's great. BTW, Panini are now the new trading card licensee for the NFL. Think of them like the new Upper Deck. But yeah, that's pretty awesome.
I was speaking more about HOU and BAL. Just also noting that neither Stafford or Ryan are homeruns yet either.
