For those that don't know, Joe Satriani's nickname is "Satch".

Here is a kickass in-your-face song he named after himself called "Satch Boogie" live at G3 in Denver in '04:

Megadeth "Countdown to Extinction" was my favorite Megadeth album ever. One for the ages, IMO. Every song on it was great.

Like him. Hate him. A true master of vibrato and sustain. Looks like he's reunited with old cohort in crime Derek St. Holmes for this classic...

Yes but put in its place and it was voodoo, witchcraft in 1977. No one had ever heard anything like that before then. I think maybe Hendrix might have eventually found something like the hammer-ons if he had survived since he about making sounds anyway you can from the guitar.

P.S. watch out for Stitches since you "borrowed" his avy :wink2::lol:

jimmy page was using hammer ons while hendrix was alive bro....I love hendrix to death imo the best of all time, but thats inspiration wise...its damn near impossible to come up with any kind of top 5 list, so many different kinds of guitarists, blues, rock, heavy metal, hair metal, black metal, death metal...see where im going with this, my favorites are

    1. Randy Rhoads
    2. Jimi Hendrix
    3. Jason Becker
    4. Jimmy Page
    5. Stevie Ray Vaughn

Hammer-ons have been around for a while, EVH will even tell you that he heard Jimmy doing it in the late 60's-early 70's. I think even Brian May used them early on. But no one created an entire sound around using them like Eddie did. Today every body has that style in there repertoire some where, but Eddie really brought it to the forefront.

As far as top 5 lists, I agree and would probably be easier to list them according to category as well.

This Satriani song, IMO, is the most beautiful song ever created. It was even used in my High School Video Yearbook. It was also my senior year GF and my song we called "Ours". Probably why my current GF and mother of my child hates it. (she secretly likes it :shifty:):

    Amen...

I can give you a list of singers a mile long better than Ozzy.

As for the guitarists, all are great in their own way. There is no one "greatest guitar solo".

There are kids out there today that no one has heard of who absolutely smoke EVH, and he'd be the first to admit it.

Guitar playing is going through yet another renaissance lately, only no one in America gets to hear it unless they go digging for it.

There are shredders out there who never get any attention over here.

And for what it's worth, the greatest guitarist of modern times - in my opinion - is the late Shawn Lane.

Ozzy has not been a "great" singer since the Randy Rhodes era, Killer of Giants was his last good metal song as for the last 20 yrs he pretty much has been more of a Ballad singer.

And Genre makes such a difference, for example a Flaminco Guitarist can play:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmcjAGJOPR0"]YouTube - Flamenco Guitar by Jason McGuire "El Rubio"[/ame]

With just a accoustic piece, but in a concert setting with 30,000 or more attendees a Heavy Metal Guitarist is in their element with the long riffs and massive speakers.

It sounds like you're saying 'Eruption' is pretty easy to play with a few years of practice. Being an Eddie Van Halen fan, like Jason Becker, that's kinda disrespectful, imo. I'd ask that you respect the guys that made guitar playing what it is today, and Eddie had a major part in that. Just my opinion. Peace.....

Bro, c'mon man. You can't be real with that argument.

Pete Townsend is in the hall too. Does that make him the greatest guitarist?

You need to broaden your horizons a bit. I can name you 5 guitarists off the top of my head that you've probably never heard of that are technically better guitarists than Eddie.

We all know he's your favorite, but let's not get ridiculous here. :wink2:

And by the way...when the Rock & Roll Hall of fame actually matters to anyone, you give me a call. :tongue2:

Hey, I'm not saying that there aren't or will not be anyone better than EVH. If you have a video of a better guitar solo than the 1st one I posted in this thread I'd love to see it. Because, that's the best one I have ever seen. Also, there is a difference between being technically great or coming out with 18 (well, 17 F*** VH3 ) kickass albums and become a Guitar Legend.

Well...17 kickass albums is a matter of opinion. There are some of us who believe Van Halen died after DLR, when instead of making balls to the wall rock albums. Eddie chose to make processed arena rock drivel. :tongue2:

And a better solo was already posted.

Bro, Yngwie smokes Eddie completely. So much so that rumor has it Eddie lost his mind when he first heard Yngwie play.

And to refute your basis for guitar greatness...putting out great albums doesn't make someone a great guitarist. Makes them a great songwriter. Again I'll use Pete Townsend as an example. Bruce Springsteen put out great albums too, is he a guitar legend?

Don't get me wrong, Eddie was amazing in his prime, but he is given WAY too much credit for the things he does. Finger tapping and hammer-ons were NOT his invention.

Hell, even Ace Frehley was finger tapping as early as 1976, and Steve Hackett even earlier. The first hammer-ons were actually done in the 60's by a man named Harvey Mandel.

Listen, neither of us will change the other's mind, so you will continue to believe "Eruption" is the best solo ever.

But you do need to listen to some other guitarists. Stephan Forté from the band Adagio would be a good start. :wink2:

I think putting out a bunch of great albums with a bunch of great songs means everything as to how good of a guitarist you are. Who cares how "technically" great you are if no one listens to your music?

Van Halen just like Dan Marino changed the way the game was played. There are countless videos on youtube of guitar icons talking about how EVH was a guitar god.

You're contradicting yourself then. How can you have the "greatest single guitar solo in history...period" if you're not technically great???

C'mon bro...you're reaching now. Hit records mean absolute squat as to how good a guitarist you are.

Miley Cyrus goes platinum with every record. I guess she's the greatest female vocalist ever, huh?

Now this argument makes no sense at all. Marino broke all the records and was technically the best passer the game has ever seen.

I never said EVH wasn't a guitar god. I only said he's been surpassed....which he has.

I wouldn't say surpassed, I would say joined. Don't get me wrong dude, there's plenty of guys that have done more. But Ed did a lot of stuff people still haven't done. His talent is amazing. How many of you guitar snobs that have never played a concert on here have rebuilt your guitar from a piece of **** Sears special to make it sound like you want? Hooked up your amp to a car battery for the effects on a car horn to add to your intro? Hooked up your guitar with an echo box to a WWII bomb? The guy did stuff that people are still trying to figure out. His creativity is astounding. He grew up dirt poor and did the best with what he had, and that helped to create a lot of the sounds you hear today. There's plenty of guys that play faster, and with more technique. But I bet you my life that if you asked somebody with a succesful career in music about 'Eruption', signed or not, they wouldnt say it's ''year 3 material'. You guys that play Eddie music can get that sound out of a ****ing pedal and guitar and numerous effects to sound like he did, after he busted his *** to get that sound out of his garage. He didn't go to a music store and get handed equipment and told, 'you can sound like this if you play this instrument with this rig'.

Ed's had an influence on on lot of people. There's lot's of music from the 50's, 60's and 70's that's very simple and basic, but you don't hate on it 'cause you think it's easy to play, you enjoy it 'cause it opened up the world that you know is rock n' roll. Like the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin, or Jimi Hendrix. If you can play it fine, but don't disrespect it 'cause it's easy. It's easy 'cause you hear the influence everytime you listen to your music. Peace.... :knucks:

Sammy Hagar had a MUCH better solo career than David Lee Roth. I can't really choose between the two myself, I consider them 1a) and 1b). I don't have to choose, that's the beauty of it for me, I can enjoy them both equally.

And now Sammy Hagar has another kickass group called Chickenfoot. And how lucky am I do you ask? (You did, I heard you ask :shifty:):

Now I got to see not only DLR with Van Halen again, but I also get to see (and just did late August) Sammy Hagar play with my 2nd favorite guitar player ever Joe Satriani with Chickenfoot!

    I am truly blessed.

Here's the best way I can put it:

Eddie Van Halen and Dan Marino have/had more "RAW TALENT" than anyone else in their respective fields.

I always thought Joe Satriani may be a little more "technically" better than Eddie Van Halen, but Eddie had more raw talent and played with more emotion than anyone I have ever seen.

I recommend you get Van Halen "Live Without a Net" on DVD. That is where that guitar solo I posted was from. It's live in New Haven (New HALEN :shifty:), CT. It is a show for the ages and I have never seen Van Halen more on target with everything for a whole concert than that one (that includes with David Lee Roth).

i think all these guys are great, yes.

i just wanted to throw Hedges name out there too. I thought he did some creative things with the guitar that made for entertaining listens. In the same vein that Hendrix & Satriani did things with guitars you didn't think one could do, Michael Hedges did similar :)

Haven't seen this thread in awhile.

If this is the case, you need to see some more guitarists. There are blues players who - as far as talent and emotion - wipe the floor with Eddie.

Branch out bro. I'd suggest listening to some Al Dimeola or Shawn Lane for starters. Maybe some Joe Bonamassa too.

I realize this is old, but Brian May of Queen was also finger tapping back in the day. Not sure if he was doing it before Ace, but was definitely doing it before EVH.
