This deal is music to my ears. I've been so worried about losing Hanley in a few years - another great young player. This is great. It's a shame we couldn't have kept Cabrera though. We'd of been one of the best teams in the league, IMO. Dontrelle Willis had to go.
I don't miss Miggy. We're doing better without him. That trade allowed the rest of our lineup to flourish. As for Dontrelle... I think whatever happened to him is correctible.
Andrew Miller taking the mound tonight. IMO this is a pretty important start for him. He pitched a lot better last time out, but does he keep moving forward or go back to getting crushed?
I think now that he has his confidence up he'll continue to play better. Its nice to see Hanley get a deal done.
Sure hope so. What concerns me is his velocity. From my understanding he is a guy who is supposed to throw at least low 90's......around 93 MPH I'd say. He has only been throwing about 87 to 89 this year. If he is taking velocity off on purpose....that can be corrected as his control improves, I just hope he doesnt have any arm issues.
I just checked out the score. We won 11-0. 11-0! I thought we were supposed to suck because Cabrera got traded.
Hey, ESPN's talking about us. I don't have Insider, so I have no idea what's said after the cutoff, but here goes. Also, this story has some interesting tidbits. Hanley, when his deal kicks in, will be the 4th highest paid shortstop in MLB. Only Jeter, Rafael Turcal, and Miguel Tejada will be paid more per year. In addition, a very interesting quote from Loria: Lastly, it looks like Dan Uggla, Mike Jacobs, Scott Olsen, and Josh Willingham are all eligible for arbitration after this year. I wonder who, if any, we'll pay. I would think Uggla is considered old enough to be expendable, and Olsen may get a big offer from another team. I hope all four stay, though. This team is winning.
Here was Andrew Millers line last night....pretty damn impressive IP Hits R ER BB Ks HR 7.0 2 0 0 1 7 0 Also the Fish are 10-5 on the road this year We've Won 6 straight.....(lets see if we get some sportscenter time, considering the "red hot" braves had a 6 game streak and everygame was detailed on SC) Cody Ross lead off the game with a 1st pitch homerun, really set the tone We are now 7-1 against the Gnats the 11 runs we scored last night were a season high Total the fish are now 22-14.....adding to the franchise's best start!!! 8 Games OVER .500 !!!! Hope we get the sweep this afternoon, and keep this streak going into Cincy!!!
Today's win, plus a Philly loss, puts us up 2.5 games for the division lead and the best start in franchise history. But why is our next series four games long?
That was the highlight of the week for me. After such a tough start, it was great to see Miller's potential being displayed, albeit against Washington.
Absolutley! Shows the kid gets a little confidence and run support, hes gunna be hard to beat!!!! Now lets take atleast 3 of 4 @ Cincy
Oh and the Marlins have the best record in baseball.......just throwin that out there. Sure people will say "its only may" But if i told you the marlins would have the best record in BASEBALL day after mothers day....90% of people would have laughed! So Boo-Ya! Go Fish!!!!!
There's our first loss in 8 games. So much for that winning streak; anyone up for building a new one?
With 3 more games @ Cincy and KC coming up, we should have a great chance to do so. Hendrickson is pitching tonight, correct?
Hendrickson's surprised me this year. I hope he keeps it up tonight. A lot of people are denigrating our starting pitching, but Hendrickson is solid, Olsen is lights-out, and Andrew Miller is finally coming on. Badenhop should come on, which leaves Nolasco as the odd man out. But when you've got at least 2 strong pitchers, a third who's getting his legs, and a fourth who'll be there, is your starting pitching REALLY that bad? The Marlins are far from the worst pitching team in baseball. (Hint: Detroit.) Also, Peter Gammons predicts an 84-87 win season for us.
Just an ousiders opinion, Hendrickson has been okay but has not faced too many tough opponents. Theres no reason to believe he wont even out in the second half. Olsen is a tough one to figure out. When he's not acting like a D-Bag he's got pretty decent stuff. Only question is how will he react when he has a couple bad starts. As far as Badenhop and Miller, they're young guys and will eventually hit a wall later this season. It happens to just about all young arms. Not gonna be able to rely on them in August and September to give 7 or 8 innings. The bullpen is also an area of concern. They've been good thus far, but you cant have your starters go 5 innings every night and expect to compete down the stretch. Cope this with the fact the fish are horrible defensively and I can see why he pegged that record of 84-87. This team reminds ALOT of the Brewers team last year. A young team who hits lots of home runs, strikes out alot, and has shotty D. IF they can keep this nucleus around (HUGE IF) I'll be worried in a couple years...
Olsen has been going deep into games this year; 7 innings in one game, 8 2/3 just the other day. 2007 Scott Olsen should be named Evil Scott Olsen; 2008 Scott Olsen should be named "They tasered the evil out of me" Scott Olsen. I don't think we're relying on Badenhop at all. Miller is someone we probably want to pan out, but our real pitching staff was on display in 2006. They've just been injured like hell since then. (Thanks, Girardi?) Our REAL pitching lineup at this point is probably Olsen, Johnson, Miller, Sanchez, Nolasco, and not necessarily in that order. Don't know what pitching staff you're watching. We had trouble with that last year, and for the first week or so of this year, but our starters have been going long innings. Olsen I mentioned above; Hendrickson's been doing pretty well in that regard; Andrew Miller just went 7 innings the other night. He cited the bullpen as a strength, though. Our defense isn't great, but it's better than last year thanks to the absence of Miguel "I ain't moving" Cabrera. Our biggest problem on D right now is Hanley, but his bat more than makes up for his glove. I'm curious as to which players you consider the franchise's nucleus. Hanley, sure, but what about the other guys?
I also said the BP was good. Just thought they would hit a wall later in the season. BTW the Marlins starters are averging under 6 innings per start. As for Ricky Nolasco, I didnt mention him because I dont feel hes of starter caliber. He was solid in the BP for Chicago as a 6th or 7th inning guy. The nucleus would be Hanley, Uggla, Jacobs, Willingham, and Hermida.
The stat for average innings pitched incorporates the horrible pitching at the beginning of the season. That number will slowly increase if our pitching stays where it is right now. It's interesting you don't think any of our pitchers qualify as a nucleus.
Scott Olsen would be the closest thing. But he's still a 2 or 3 on ALOT of staffs. Hes had a nice start to the season but again just like with Hendrickson, hasnt faced too many quality lineups. Andrew Miller is a huge question mark. They guy is young, yes. But he played a few years of college ball, he should be a little more polished (e.g Justin Verlander) Josh Johnson is another guy, but with arm problems this early in his career not sure if he qualifies either. Look they've done a nice job with the money they've spent and the trades they've made, but the ceiling can only get so high for that dollar amount...
Yeah thats what they said when we had a 50 million dollar payroll against the 180 million dollar payroll of the yankees in 03'.....just sayin
True, but lets think about this. Thats 30 MILLION more than the current Marlins payroll and that was 5 years ago. Big difference between 20 and 50 million in todays market. And IMO anything over 100 mill is fluff. That team had some bloated FA contracts that picked up to try and buy a WS.
from what im reading we will be buyers closer towards the allstar break if we are still in a firm position to battle for a WC or the division....so that payroll number may go up... this ownership has done it before... jocque jones got cut, and as long as he passes waivers we sign him and detroit picks up the bulk of the contract, this FO is smart at saving money and putting out decent talent
These last 3 losses have really hurt, both in terms of who we lost to and our divisional standing. We got robbed last night, and we need to get revenge today. We have a road trip coming up where we play Atlanta, Philly, and New York. That'll be the most important road trip of the season, IMO.
Good job by the team tonight; great to be back in the win column again. Even with that 4-game skid, we're still 1 game ahead of Philthy for the division lead. We're 24-18, they're 24-20. A thin margin, but I'll take it.
