According to the morning Miami Herald, the reason for the extra $ 2 million over and above Manny's contract was to pay the anticipated signing bonuses for the two conditional draft picks we would get when Manny dumped us the day after the season ends. Actually if this is the truth, I can't blame the Marlins for asking, and as it turns out, that wasn't what busted the deal, it was the compensation the Pirates wanted from the Marlins (2 top tier prospects & Ryan Tucker) and we balked at that. That was too high a price to pay for Manny, even if he would have been really good for us. I gotta hand it to Beinfest for being prudent, and smart. If I critizised them before for the $ 2 million I take it back and now applaud them
well that, imo....was the worst loss of the season thus far.....freddy made a terrible mistake pinch hitting gonzo for olsen......up 2 runs....olsen on fire.....gonzo (who has been terrible this season) strikes out looking with bases loaded.... then doug weachter comes in the next inning...and gives up a solo shot...... gonzo, freddy, and the bullpen blew this one....and it stings splitting a 4 game series when we shoulda won 3...... oh....and uggla is HERRENDOUS sense the allstar game..... and hermida.....4 k's today.....over 100 k's this season.....260 avg and low hr's......hes gotta live up to his expectations
Stuff like that is why I was coming around to sending Hermida off. We're going to lose him in arbitration anyway.
I watched the Rockies-Marlins game today.....wow, that was an ugly Marlin's loss, but great for my Phillies....the Muts also got beat.
Wasn't ugly so much as a tough game we happened to lose. It's okay when we sweep the Phillies it won't matter much anyway. Roman you're too cool to like the Phillies. Seriously, it's a crime.
The Phillies, Sixers and Flyers rule. I almost became an Eagle's fan as well but that would have been the ulitmate torture.
I have to agree with everything. I had a really bad feeling when Olsen came out of the game. We also did this v.s. the Cubs as well when we should have won 3 of 4.
We must be getting somewhere, because someone turned on the anti-Marlins FUD machine. I really have got to stop reading this site. Fanhouse's bloggers are some of the laziest I've ever seen. But then where do I turn to, ESPN? A joke. Fox Sports? Yeah right.
That rumor was started by Peter Gammons the day the deal was made. If they didnt want to part with Stanton fine, I could live with that. But if the deal was killed over $2 Million then they should sell the team tomorrow because they have no business owning/running a professional franchise. I also have a tough time believing the Sox wouldnt pull the trigger for an extra 2M. So who knows...
It's already been confirmed the deal was broken due to the Pirates wanting more from the Marlins. Had nothing to do with an extra $2 million from the Red Sox, inasmuch as they had already agreed to pay us the $2 million. Beinfest stuck to the initial offer that was tentatively agreed upon by the Pirates. At the last second, they asked for more.
Man, the Pirates still bother me. What the hell kind of blatant extortion is that? Anyway, Marlins are back tonight. Hanley should be ready to go after the day off yesterday, not playing the day before that, and not having to play until this evening. 2 1/2 days of rest should be enough for the guy.
I just noticed this thread dropped to four stars. Which Mutts, Philthies, or Chickens fan is responsible?
Kind of late to the party, but, Olsen was at 94 pitches when he was pinch-hit for. He would have pitched, at the most, one more inning. Hardly the difference in the game. And Hermida since the ASB is hitting: .270 with a .911 OPS. He's on the verge of breaking out. I did a Marlins top prospects about a month ago and I'm going to do a second version concentrating on a few different prospects.
lol a less than a month of decent numbers....compared to a first half....is hardly a breakout.....considering he's still striking out 4 times a game.....and at a ridiculous clip for a batter in the 2 spot..... he needs to start hitting basehits and doubles.... striking out a lot but hitting 30 hrs is fine.... but striking out a lot and only hitting 15 hrs.....is unacceptable imo
How about the fact that this kid was one of the best prospects in baseball just two years ago. And the fact that he's shown the ability to consistently drive the ball at this level. He has a combined eight homers and doubles in 60 AB's this month. He plays very good defense. And he's still only 24! I dont understand the hate he gets sometime.
he hasn't played at the level expected of him. just because he was a great prospect doesn't mean he will become a great player. For his potential he has been a disappointment.
I disagree. He has showed his age. Most players his age are still in the minors. He has a respectable career .800 OPS. He has been a disappointment to those with unrealistic expectations.
I don't think so. He is arby eligible after 2009 season. Too early because the stadium would still be at least 2 years away. He will be shipped elsewhere after this season, or before the July deadline next year. This ownership only stepped up to the plate on Ramirez because he is "THAT" special player. And I am not even sure he will be on this team next year, because if the stadium is delayed or not happening, he and his contract will be gone in a flash. This ownership has no trouble doing that, look at the Dontrelle/Miggy trade. If they do it again, no one will do anything but shrug their shoulders and say "whats new" same old, same old Marlins.
Not until a new stadium is producing revenue will that happen, and then don't count on it. This ownership has never made any promises about personnel and likely will keep doing the same thing they have always done, act like cheap bastards.
I agree completely. This guy, for being taken 5th in the 1st round is almost a bust. People always say "he's still so young"...... Well as an organization we cannot be patient like other clubs. Our guys have to produce NOW, not later. They have to MLB ready and as Beinfest has said so often, "outperform" their contracts. If you are the Yankees or Red Sox, or Dodgers, you can afford to wait on guys to breakout and be patient, but the Marlins have to play by a whole set of different financial considerations.
If you are a Marlin, you have to grow up fast, or be shipped out. Its the rules the Marlins play under. That is why I can't understand the Marlins drafting so many HS players. They take the longest to develop and take more money for less return. To me the team would be better off taking more college players, and getting them to the bigs sooner and then getting rid of them before their arby years.
He's arbitration eligible after this season, not next season. I don't see how the stadium is getting delayed. Braman is on the verge of being laughed out of court, last I heard. Whoa, what? Yankees, patient? Every year for the Yankees is a win now year. Same with the Red Sox and Dodgers, too. We've got it better than they do in the sense that we have the luxury of being able to develop talent over the course of several years rather than being pressured to blow $20 million on a mid-level free agent.
Also, I would like to add that FSN sucks. Why the hell are the Marlins not in HD? We had HD games for the first week or so of the season and nothing since. What's the problem?
