When Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill said in July that, “I will break 2,000 yards this year,” it would have been easy to dismiss, as no one in NFL history has ever recorded 2,000 receiving yards in a season. No one can dismiss Hill’s chances now.

Hill has 1,324 receiving yards through 11 games, which puts him on pace for 2,046 yards in a 17-game season. The NFL record for receiving yards in a season was set by Calvin Johnson in 2012, with 1,964 receiving yards.

With 76 yards at Washington on Sunday, Hill will be the fifth player in NFL history to reach the 1,400-yard mark within the first 12 games of the season. The others to do it were Johnson in 2012, Lance Alworth in 1965, Charley Hennigan in 1961 and Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch in 1951.

No wide receiver has ever been named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, and it’s very unlikely to go to any non-quarterback in today’s NFL, where quarterbacks control the game in a way no non-quarterback can. But if there’s a non-quarterback who’s in the MVP conversation it’s Hill, who is playing the game at a level than no other wide receiver can reach.

I really hope he gets it early in week 17. The Buffalo game week 18 could very well be meaningless and you know he's going to want to play for 2000 when he should be resting for the playoffs.

That's 6 games to gain 676 more yards....it feels doable. Hopefully he gets 200+ this weekend and it's not coming down to the wire. I'm worried that he'll just miss the mark.

If his ankle doesn't get in his way I think he can get 330+ in the next two games.

Washington's defense is awful, so its very likely he has a good game Sunday. Tennessee is middle of the pack, so harder to judge.

Lance Alworth in 1965, Charley Hennigan in 1961 and Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch in 1951. Those guys doing it is really amazing. Passing was not as big a thing during their time.

If Hill does indeed break that record, I certainly hope he does it in week 17. I don't want any asterisk and someone saying, "yea, but it took him 17 games".

But in the GRAND scheme of things, I'd rather have Hill not break the record and the Dolphins make a deep playoff run than to have Hill break the record and be one and done in the playoffs.

If we can have both? Icing on the cake.

With 157 more receiving yards today Hill now has 1,481 total receiving yards with 5 games to go. To beat Johnson's 1,964 yards over 16 games Hill will have to average 121 yards for the next 4 games. Otherwise, if the goal is just to get to 2000 in 17 games he just needs 97 yards per game. This is VERY doable.

I would guess Tyreek would care about being the undisputed best WR for total yards, so I'm expecting him to do it in 16 (if possible). For me personally, I just want to see him get there by any means. And I agree, it's very doable!

The other stat people should pay attention to with Hill is TDs. The two most highly correlated stats (over a career) for "great" WRs are volume stats: totals receiving yards and total TDs. Hill underperforms on the TD front compared to the great ones like Rice and Moss. He's now at 12 TDs this year. Best he ever did with Mahomes is 15. If Hill ends up with more yards and more TDs in a season than with Mahomes (and we can adjust to a 16 game season), that REALLY says something about Tua's effect on Tyreek.

I really hope he gets it week 17 so we can rest him in a meaningless Buffalo game. And it would be nice to not have an asterisk next to the accomplishment.

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill’s remarkable 2023 season continued on Sunday. Hill scored touchdowns on 78- and 60-yard catches of passes from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and put up five catches for 157 yards overall in Miami’s 45-15 rout of the Commanders. Hill was asked after the game if he was surprised about seeing man coverage from Washington on the 78-yard score.

“Not for real man, because those guys are great at what they do and they also get paid. But at some point it’s like, man. I don’t know, man. I just appreciate it. Thanks for not respecting me, I guess,” Hill said, via Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post.

Hill said he thought quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw the ball to the wrong place on the 60-yard score, but, via Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com, said he realized after watching the tape that he had run the wrong route. Whatever happened, it all continues to work out perfectly for Hill and the Dolphins.

The only thing better than being a Dolphins fan right now is being a Dolphins fan and having Tyreek Hill on your fantasy team.

LOL, he was my 1st draft pick...and I traded him and Tua away when I quit my job so one of my buddies would benefit. I've won 5 of the past 6 weeks though playing the free agent pool with a different lineup each week. It's still surprisingly fun but darn, LOL, I would have been in cheat mode if I just kept my draft picks.

That's best season by receiving yards. By TDs it's 2020 where he had 15 TDs. Either way, Hill is on track to beat both receiving yards and TD totals with Tua, even over a 16 game stretch.

I only looked up Jerry Rice, Julio Jones, and Calvin Johnson but I believe that Tyreek is 485 yards away from having the most receiving yards over a two-season span.

Going to be hard to do it. I think he falls short imho. I don’t want us forcing the issue and costing us some games trying to break a personal record.

I don’t think he’s getting 100 yards against ravens / Buffalo or Dallas.

those defenses are going to shut him down somewhat, and we can’t force the issue trying to get that record.

I almost always avoid homering out on Dolphin players when it comes to fantasy football, but when he was available with the 4th pick in a keeper league and the 5th pick in a redraft league - I would have been crazy not to take him. 11-2 & 10-2-1 respectively in those leagues.

Did Calvin miss any time in his 16 game season when he set the record? So far Tyreek has essentially sat out the 4th quarter of the Denver, New York and Washington games. I wouldn't be surprised if he sits the 4th against the Titans as well, their pass defence is awful and it's going to be another *** whooping.

We are a different team at home, I'll be surprised if he doesn't go for over 100 in at least 1 of those games against Dallas and Buffalo.

Tyreek is getting close to 200 yards against Dallas. That team has a problem with motion and they play a lot of man.

    Ravens will be tough.

Bills might be playing for draft position.

I actually don't think they'll make it. First, aside from the 4 division champs only 3 others make it and there are four 7-5 teams right now, all ahead of Buffalo. Second, Denver at 6-6 is playing very well (5 wins out of last 6) and they have the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bills. Third, Buffalo has a tough remaining schedule (KC, Dallas, Miami). Fourth, Buffalo has lost 3 out of their last 4, so it's not like they're on a roll.

I'm actually relishing seeing Buffalo not making the playoffs for the first time in 5 years. It's a changing of the guard in the AFC East.

I hope it happens that way, but KC is playing badly, Dallas plays poorly on the road and I never count Buffalo as a win for us until it happens. Also, Denver has to play at Detroit, so they're likely going to lose one more game.

Worth pointing out that without Hill setting the Dolphins single season record himself last year, he would have just broken the old mark in just 12 games. And not just barely, but surpassing the nearly 40 year old record by almost 100 yards.

    Hill 2022: 119 receptions, 1710 yards, 7 TD
    Hill 2023: 93 receptions, 1481 yards, 12 TD
    Clayton 1984: 73 receptions, 1389 yards, 18 TD

Waddle nearly broke the old mark himself last year, with 1356 yards, and so three of the top four seasons in team history have come in the last two years. At 743 yards so far this season, Waddle likely isn't coming close to last year's totals though.

FWIW, the Dolphins record in a 14-game season was 996 yards by Paul Warfield in 1971, so Hill beat that by almost 500 yards in two fewer games. Very different era and team makeup of course. After Warfield's 1971 season, the team never had another player even break 800 yards until the year was expanded to 16 games in 1978.
