He could be like Smith in Carolina. Always a pro-bowler. He was considered slow and short with good hands and quickness. Look how he turned out. You can't measure heart.

    JAKE LONG UPDATE

Mandel's Take: As the number one pick, the guy better be able to play anywhere they put him. As Sparano said, left tackle is their need (as if they have only "a" need!) so he'll be given every opportunity to succeed at that pivotal position. Wherever Long plays, he's almost a sure bet to improve the Dolphins'running game.

Mancini's Take: People unfairly compare Long to Joe Thomas who's a bit more nimble than the former Michigan man when it comes to pass blocking, but Long should have no problems playing left tackle. While his overall agility may not be up to par with some others at the position, his power and drive-blocking prowess are amazing. I can't see why Long can't be a perennial All Pro barring injury.

If Bess turns out like Smith, we would all be wearing his jerseys.

I'd be happy if Bess turned out to be our new Wes Welker.

Thanks Anthony, good info to read. Bess would be a great pickup for us if he turned into another Welker, we need a few of those stories/pickups to go our way for a change. BTW anyone know what Bess' time is in the 40? I have watched videos on him and he sure can catch the ball, and knows how to get loose from a defender.

Every 7th catch goes for a TD and with 293 catches he didn't fumble; Not Once! Love the stats!:wink2:

    Smith was never considered slow

That's probably about as slow as Smith would run the 40. His combine 40 time was about 4.31. Bess could only dream of running like Smith.

According to www.nfldraftscout.com he ran a 4.64 at the combine and 4.6 at his pro day

BTW, if we do have a WR on the roster, other than Ginn, who can run like Steve Smith, it is Jayson Foster, not Davone Bess.

What worries me is that every year there is a WR that is "the next big thing" who rarely even makes the team.

Not to be a party pooper but fool me once shame on you, fool me the last 6 years...shame on me.

Exactly, and we have been here before, unknown Wr catching eyes in the offseason..

As long as Devone can catch the ball and knows where the first down marker is, he could stick, but catching the ball and finding the first down markers in traffic is a NFL skill, much more so then raw speed.

We''ll see soon enough, TC Reporters will be able to give a no B$ assesment of Bess's ability to create seperation from a defender...I cannot wait until TC finally opens.....

I heard Bess is a Mormon....we should not have to worry about any characters issues with him.

This bears repeating, 293 reception w/o a fumble. The other thing not mentioned is how intelligent of a football player he is and the skill he has in reading Defenses and DB's. HI ran a read and react system that required the reciever to run his route based on the allignment of the defender.

I'm not worried about his 40 time not being that good, he has a knack for getting open, and an even better knack for catching the ball. Jerry Rice wasn't exactly a speed burner and he turned out pretty good (understatement of the century).
