And we were discussing our teams, and he made a comment like "Miami doesn't have a QB." I responded, "Yes we do. His name is Chad Henne, sucka!"
In a sense, he's right. Henne's QB rating for 2009 was 75. That's not very good. But at the same time, Tom Brady has the look and feel of a guy who wants to retire sooner rather than later. Being Mr. Bundchen is more lucrative for him at this point than going 18-1 again.
Funny thing about that, Brady missed a full season, which is the first time in his life he was not football 100% of the time, he got to hang out with his super model fiance', he got spare time to do other things, apparently he really dug it as this year his participation in the Patriots offseason has been drastically reduced.
At the same time, I "don't break out the anointing oil," as Bill Parcells once said of press reaction to Tony Romo's debut, for a guy with a 75 QB rating. I'd like to see Henne post at least a 90 QB rating this season. Then, presuming there isn't a work stoppage in 2011, I'd like to see him get as close to 100 as possible. And if you think that's unreasonable, consider that Aaron Rodgers did more in his first season starting than Henne has, and that both Rodgers and Philip Rivers have QB ratings over 100 for 2009. Henne has the tools. His offensive line is better than Green Bay's, and his receiving corps--WRs, TEs, and RBs--are about equal with San Diego's on the whole. But he still has to do it. Right now, he hasn't. That's what I'm referring to. Brady also seems content to let contract negotiations drag out, which tells me he doesn't see a new deal as a priority. And hey, when your supermodel wife is making $20 million a year and you already have three rings, maybe it's time to go out while you've still got your health.
For every success, there many more failures. I think Desides is just trying to play devil's advocate here... Chad Henne certainly isn't a guarantee, but some seem to act like he is. I hope Henne pans out and I really like the kid, but sometimes I feel like we may be getting ahead of ourselves... seems to me that many think that Henne is our franchise quarterback, which is really up in the air.
There are plenty of QBs who have accomplished as much a Henne has, and turned out to be failures. Too soon to annoint him anything other than our starting QB.
You guys are starting to depress me...I know him being our franchise QB is not garunteed. And in the event that he sucks like every other post-Marino QB I think I will crawl under a rock and just wait for a worthy successor of Marino.
He won't suck. Our coaching staff is too good to let that happen. At worst, IMO he's an average QB in the NFL. He doesn't need to be Dan Marino, or even a Pro Bowler. He can be Eli Manning or any other average QB thats won a Super Bowl.
