Taking Jon Martin over a WR in the 2nd round was a great idea Jeff!

Without starting on mothers, this guy looks like a tentative, confused fat kid going out for football for the first time. You might keep him on the team because you like his size and smarts, and he may develop into a good lineman in practice over time if he works hard, gets in shape, bulks up and gets the technique down. But you don't start him as a freshman. He just ain't ready. Whoever thought he might be, right away, made a mistake.

I still can't believe we passed on Stephen Hill to take Martin.
I'm usually not negative toward Ireland but we blew it on this pick.
    Martin is a bum.

So you think we're sitting ok at the right tackle position, do you?

Pretty sure we could have grabbed someone off the street to be a human turnstile.
It would have been much cheaper. :wink2:

Then you have a promising young WR.

You must be great at Madden given the ability of hindsight and use of the reset button and all. :wink2:

However, in the real NFL all you have is foresight, and it's quite apparent the foresight prior to the draft was about trying to lock down the right tackle position since QB protection is more important than any 2nd round receiver will ever be. Apparently you've never seen what Tom Brady or Peyton Manning look like when they're not protected. This game is won & lost in the trenches; it's not flag football, and the funny thing about football is---- if the QB can't throw the ball, a WR probably won't be catching it.

You know how I know playmakers mean crap by themselves? In 2010, the Texans had the NFL's #1 running back (Foster), one of the NFL's top 3 receivers (Johnson), one of the better pass catching TE tandems (Daniels & Dreesen), and a top 10 QB getting them the ball, yet their 6-10 record was tied for 7th worst.

So if you want to irrationally gripe and moan about Martin after 2 preseason games, have at it, but it's quite clear that right tackle performance is our most important need at the moment, and that won't change until it's addressed. Ireland had the foresight to see this issue and drafted the best tackle on the board. Period. Unless you have a Calvin Johnson, a receiver is NOT going to save your franchise, especially not a 2nd rounder. How many more wins did Brandon Marshall give us? NONE. Actually, 1 less.

PS: You still didn't answer my question. I guess you think we're perfectly ok at right tackle, that it's not a serious issue for us?

That is perfectly fine logic if said RT has 1st round ability like we were told.
Obviously it looks so far as if he doesn't. If thats the case they blew it by worrying too much about need instead of taking the best player available at the time.
I'll be interested to see your opinion on this when and if Martin is a bust.

but if Martin was widely regarded as a 1st round talent (borderline 1st-2nd at worst) then we were getting value & need with the pick, no? And more importantly he seemed to be a good fit coming from a zone blocking scheme at Stanford.

He might look like he's sucking right now, but it seems obvious to me that spending a 2nd rounder on a RT turned out to be a good decision. Whether or not we grabbed the right player may or may not prove to be a different ball of wax. At the time of our pick, I don't think there was another tackle available who would've been considered for the selection. Mike Adams was next, but he wasn't taken until the end of the round, and I'm not sure if he would've been a better fit.

Trust me, I feel your pain about having to pass on a WR like Hill b/c it hurt to see his name still on the board, but the last thing we want happening to Tannehill is what happened to Bradford & Stafford their first 2 years. We gotta do everything possible to help him think more about coverage and where he's going with the ball rather than thinking about the pass rush. IMO adding a great talent like Hill wouldn't improve Tannehill's development as much as him having confidence in his Oline.

My opinion won't change based on what Martin does b/c hindsight is insignificant IMO.
At the time of the pick we needed a RT worse than anything else, especially after drafting a franchise QB (hopefully). I look at it as----- we needed a RT so badly that it forced us to pass on a guy like Hill. I don't care how great Hill turns out, I'd still be pissed if our GM ignored such a huge and important need on our Oline and blatantly risked the safety of our future QB.

The only way my opinion would be different is from 2 things:
    1. if Martin wasn't regarded as the best or even 2nd best tackle prospect on the board at that time.
    2. the pick was a big reach (which it wasn't).

For comparison, if this were '07 draft and we were in desperate need of a WR (which we were), I wouldn't complain that we took a WR even though Ginn didn't pan out; I'd complain that he wasn't the best one on the board, and I'd complain that he was a reach. But honestly, I can't really say that this year about right tackle and Jon Martin.

If we had been successful in landing Eric Winston, then yes, I'd be complaining about taking Martin b/c it'd seem like a Pat White type luxury pick...... but I simply will never complain about drafting a position of major need in the 2nd round when he's regarded as good value for the pick.

What would fans be saying if the situation were reversed and we drafted Hill instead and then ignored our starting RT till the 6th round [after having watched the Colombo fiasco last year], and then preseason arrives and we're all watching Tannehill get beaten up from the strong side pass rusher play after play? People would be saying, "WTF, Ireland! How can you ignore our franchise QB's protection like that! You're gonna get him f'n killed!! Who cares if we have Hill if our QB is injured and/or he has no time to get Hill the ball downfield where he thrives!"

We've had some WTF picks over the past decade, but I simply don't see this as being one.

Wow you are so much in love with the idea of drafting picks out of need that it makes no difference if they are a bust.
Some people really scare me with their logic.

Nice straw argument there buddy. I guess you don't have anything to say so you make stuff up.
Obviously you skipped over the multiple times I mentioned how the pick represented both value AND need.
Even you yourself mentioned how he was considered 1st round talent, so not only are your posts immature but they're also hypocritical.
Oh, yeah, and wouldn't drafting a WR in round 2 [like you wanted] be considered "drafting out of need" according your your definition? Like I said---- hypocrite.

A hillbilly named Wade and some young players emerging ( Watt, Reed) is why Houston is a serious SB contender.

It is not enough to say that he has a "learning curve" and it;s "only preseason".

I made this point before, and I will again. GOOD players don't look like crap against 1st cut fodder. If his name was Joe Blowsucksie and was an undrafted free agent, he would be cut after this latest fiasco. It makes matters worse when he can be responsible for getting a promising prospect in Tannehill killed.

I think if his name was Joe Blowsucksie the first thing he'd want to do is have a name change. It would be embarrassing for him to be out there on the field with Blowsucksie on the back of his jersey.

Like our great guard Keith Sims said, when he was a rookie he played extensively as a starter all preseason and it took him all 4 games to get his sh!t together.

We all hope to God he gets better quickly, but the reality is, like many tackles before him, it could take him a year or so. Unfortunately we have to be prepared for some of these guys to take a little bit to be ready. Look how long it took Soliai. Just as seniors in high school often don't make an impact as a freshman in college, juniors & seniors in college often don't make an immediate impact when transitioning to the NFL. It's just the way it is unfortunately. I imagine it will be 2 years before we can begin to accurately assess our 2012 draft class...... but 3 is more likely IMO.

he was pretty bad. it was like every play he was either getting beat, on the ground, or penalized. he looked like a high school freshman facing college defensive lineman. and he didnt play too well in the first game against Tampa bay either.

im all for talented rookies to take their lumps early on but when you're talking about an offensive tackle his performace on the field can directly correlate to the safety of the QB. he's not gonna get much stronger between now and the opener and Houston's DL aint no joke. i think unless Martin DRASTICALLY improves it's too risky to have him out there protecting Tannehill. there have to be better RT options out there.

Martin looks as if he started playing football two weeks ago.

I am a little late to this thread, not like you guys care, but how can anyone fault Ireland for taking Martin in the 2nd round with such a need for OL at that time. Now if you want to throw stones at Ireland for not taking a WR, do it in the 3rd round.

    That's certainly more reasonable.

I wouldn't fault Ireland for drafting DE over WR in the 3rd round, especially if he felt the DE represented great value, and even more so considering the lack of pass rush we're seeing when Wake's not on the field. DE is a priority position, and it's not like Vernon was a luxury pick.

I also wouldn't fault him for taking Egnew over a WR b/c TEs catch passes, too, and it's quite possible that Egnew represented the best pass catching option on the board, which IMO is more important than simply isolating it to 1 position [WR].

The only way these are bad picks are if they don't pan out, b/c in that case Ireland would be accountable for poor or improper evaluations.
