IMO, they are all a little unrealistic right now. I think the overall rankings will change a fair amount between now and the draft, and also till we see what happens in free agency, it is all an even bigger guess which positions will be addressed and when. It's still fun though.
Wow. Tony Pauline says he's been told by scouts that the top 7 corners on most teams boards are Dee Milliner, Desmond Trufant, Xavier Rhodes, Johnthan Banks, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Jamar Taylor and Darius Slay. Jordan Poyer not there. Scouts like him but question his speed (which I've alluded to in the past). Scouts think Leon McFadden's height (below 5'10") is a big issue, and they don't even talk much about Logan Ryan of Rutgers.
Yeah I've always thought Trufant would get into the 1st round, and not really be a factor for pick #42 after all. A little surprised though that (or so Pauline seems to be implying) he's actually being rated better than Johnthan Banks. As is Xavier Rhodes.
When Poyer runs under 4.5 at the combine, he'll be right back in the top mix, and if he isn't and goes in the 3rd or later, some team will get the steal of the draft.
That would be IF Poyer runs under a 4.5 at the Combine. If bodog put a line up on that, I'm not sure I wouldn't go ahead and take the over on that one.
It will be fun to see what happens. Probably the #1 thing I'm gonna watch most closely at the combine. The thing is, even if he runs a 4.55 or some such, he plays fast enough, and he has superb coverage instincts and get's his hands on a lot of passes, and does not drop them when he does. Ronde Barber ran a poor 40 time back at the 1997 combine too. Fell to the 3rd round, and the Bucs got a steal.
And he played in a Bucs system which very much protected him from having that lack of speed exploited. If Jordan Poyer gets the label of that kind of "system" guy he's most certainly not a 1st rounder, in my opinion.
I get it...but then, as I started watching more of his stuff recently, I don't get it. I think he's going to re-stabilize himself at the Combine.
He will. Banks will probably run between 4.42 and 4.45 in the forty. His VJ is going to be 36+ inches. I imagine he will post some very impressive three cone and short shuttle times as well. People will watch him workout and forget about his play on a bum wheel at the end of the season.
My mock draft, version 3.0 12.) Keenan Allen, WR, California 42.) Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama 56.) Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State 77.) Jordan Reed, TE, Florida 82.) Robert Alford, CB, Southeast Louisiana 108.)D.J. Swearinger, FS, South Carolina 139.) Chris Harper, WR, Kansas State 203.) Cierre Wood, RB, Notre Dame 210.) Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia Keenan Allen, IMO, is the most obvious choice at 12. Ireland talks of playmakers and Allen is the most polished ready to start from day 1 WR in the draft. Every 1st rounder since Ireland's been GM have been opening day starters. Barrett Jones may seem a surprise at 42, but he is extremely versatile, and won the Outland Trophy in 2011, playing left tackle. He can play any of the 5 line positions with equal skill. Taylor and Alford are both talented, instinctive, well rounded corners. Jordan Reed is an Aaron Hernandez clone who is ready to contribute immediately as joker TE. Swearinger has some ball hawking ability and a lot of experience as a free safety. Harper is an underrated WR in this deep group, big, with strong sure hands and deceptive football speed. Represents doubling up at a position of dire need. Cierre Wood is a runner I like, who is good value in the 7th. Washington was a surprise at the Senior Bowl, flashing some pass rush ability.
I wouldn't touch Barrett Jones with a ten foot pole. I think he is going to be in serious trouble when he gets to the next level, he looks very slow to me and does not turn well at all. I'd be very wary about him, if he didn't play for Alabama I don't think anyone would look him up until the middle rounds at best. Washington could turn into a demon at the next level. Get a little stronger and thicker and he could be dangerous, has the hands and long arms to give OL fits.
Robert Alford could be a guy flying under the radar based on this. His Senior Bowl performance will be a distant memory by the time the draft rolls around. I can't get over what a deep draft this is at so many positions. Great draft to have extra picks. Ireland, please don't screw it up.
