Dude, it's a fifth round pick. A fifth spent on a kicker is far from unusual.

But for a kicker, it is a high-ish pick.

I totally get where you're coming from. But in today's NFL, any pick can end up being a good contribution player. A 5th round wideout, runningback, linebacker, or guard can become a solid starter.

Well, considering that we grabbed a guard, running back, and a linebacker* prior to Sturgis....

*And before you say anything, I'm replying without using the benefit of hindsight.

Is it just me or do questions have to be asked about professional athletes whose job it is to just kick a ball a few times a game with next to no risk of any other contact or obstacle, who managed to get injured practicing said job?

Seriously. How does this happen? Soccer players, especially goalkeepers, would be thoroughly screwed.

Continuous repetitive motions over a period of time can cause injury (sometimes serious) to a joint and the surrounding tissue structures. Pitchers in baseball can have his issue, for example.

IF an injury occurs (esp. in Sturgis' case with the groin), and the motion is repeated, the person can continue to "re-injure" the injury site. Sturgis' problem could be a number of things. Maybe God just put him together this way? And while he may have the ability to kick a long damned FG, maybe he wasn't meant to do it for the majority of his prime adult life.

Patients can have carpal tunnel symptoms, and many merely bang away at tiny keys on a keyboard. It's these repititious motions over a long period of time that can cause issues....
