How am I the first nerd to start a thread on this? I can't be the only one going through Black Ops Withdrawal can I? Gaming forum has been as Dead as the Sony Network lately. Anyway...

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/26/sony-playstation-network-down-ps3_n_853695.html

Sony's PlayStation Network, plagued by problems for days, is being shut down indefinitely, according to the Wall Street Journal.

This is terrible timing for Sony. I think their online network had really closed the gap with Microsoft Live, but this definitely hurts.

Huffington Post is SEO crap, let’s not give them any more traffic than absolutely necessary. Here’s the real story:

Sony doesn’t know if credit card information has been stolen. At this point they’re basically rebuilding servers to add security.

Sucks for you guys who want to play Portal 2 co-op from a PS3, though.

I'm not playing any of the new games, but am really annoyed that I can't play DC Universe every night. Since the network is down, I've gone back and started playing Uncharted 2 again.

I don't know much about the Huffington Post or what SEO crap even means, but I fail to see how your "real story" is much different from what I posted. The network is down indefinitely. It doesn't mean forever, but it means they don't know when it will be back up.

The Huffington Post is a content mill. They harvest and collate stories without payment, present excerpts to Google’s automatic indexing in a way that will cause their results to appear on the first page of searches, and then make money when people click the link.

The point here isn’t that my link is somehow different from yours, the point is that my link doesn’t reward search engine spamming.

That sucks. What's worse is even when they do get it up and running I'm sure we'll have to create all new passwords, etc. What a cluster F.

I sure hate Microsoft's nickel and diming but I'm considering dusting off the Xbox360 after all this.

My roommate hasn't been able to hog our bandwidth by streaming Netflix for nearly a week now. I hope the PS Network burns to the ground (not really, but it can stay down as long as possible).

At the moment, I’m a bit ticked with myself for not using a fake address as is my custom. (No CC# on file since I don’t buy anything from PSN, thankfully.)

    Throttle him at the router.

I never considered that to be honest. I have used mostly PSN cards for purchases, but I had used a CC before.

Really though, name and address for most people can be easily found on the net so that isn't a huge issue (still disconcerting though). If it's DOB and not birthday that'd be more of an issue I think.

Regardless, that's a **** ton of info that was likely obtained. Kind of coincidental I got about 6 e-mails within the past week from various places I conduct business with saying that my e-mail address may have been obtained because the 3rd part info storage place that they use had been infiltrated (all places used the same 3rd party).

Based on the email I dug up confirming my activation of a PSN account in 2008, it’s name, address, zip code, email address, and PSN ID/password. Birthday doesn’t appear to be in there, though it might be.

Sony UK’s list of information that was exposed and stolen:

Sony continues to say that there’s no evidence that credit card numbers were stolen, but they’re assuming they were. CC# and expiration date would have been obtained if those were stolen, but CVV would not.

And Sen. Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut is POed.

That has nothing to do with what’s going on now.

A few weeks ago, the group Anonymous personally tried to dig up dirt on Sony’s executives over the company’s suing of hacker George Hotz (aka GeoHot) over PS3 hacking, custom firmware, and the removal of the PS3’s OtherOS option. They DDOS’d PSN, but it didn’t last long.

What happened last week is a separate attack that Anonymous is not claiming credit for. This wasn’t intended to defend GeoHot or protest anything, it was done to steal personal information and sell it.

    Two different situations.

At this point I'm starting to think that this outage will be in terms of weeks, not days. I'm upset because if my account information got taken that means that my personal e-mail address - the one that's clean and that I only use for things like this - has been compromised. I'm also paying money to use Hulu Plus, which seems like kind of a waste now.

I get that the service is free but one of the big reasons I got the PS3 was for Hulu ... between that and my account being compromised I'm rather concerned.

    EDIT:

I just got a letter from Hulu Plus, who are giving me a week credit because the service has been unavailable on PS3. And while they're still working the kinks out (mine still stutters from time to time), that's just good customer service ... giving me credit for something that isn't their fault.

That’s probably correct. Rebuilding international infrastructure and adding layers of security takes a long time.

Years ago I thought MS was being a bit paranoid when they were designing Xbox Live with a "better than Military" security structure. I don't think that anymore.

This is a bit of "you get what you pay for" kind of situation. Sony couldn't be bothered to protect itself and (more importantly) its customers.

On the plus side, once Sony gets back online and gets the PS3 down to $199 I still plan to get one to go with my 360. At least things should be safer by then, but I may get a temporary CC to sign up and fake most of my personal info anyway.

Hey, you guys paying for DC Universe Online getting a credit or something?

I thought I read somewhere Sony claims to have contacted everyone on Playstation Network to let them know about the breach. Am I the only one who hasn't seen any emails from Sony?

Edit: NM, I did receive notice. I probably just ignored it as more spam that Sony constantly sends me since signing up for the network.

Sony was never going to spend the kind of money for a free service it could have for a subscription one. I say Sony tried to go as cheap as possible and we are seeing the result.

Or you could go with "Sony was just incompetent", if it makes you feel better.

playing team death match with your girlfriend on local against computer dummies just isn't the same. But we did have a perfect game on nuketown against 8 "recruits". It's not really that hard to do, but my girlfriend really sucks.

You do realize that free services actually cost more to build and maintain, right? By definition, the lack of a constant revenue stream makes it harder to keep something running.

The lack of a revenue stream means you cut costs at every opportunity (design/coding/testing, etc) and run as cheap as you can. Which is what I believe Sony did since the money was coming out of their pocket.

Sure the end result is a more vulnerable network, but no way hackers would ever -oh, I guess they would!

I guess we could all take the view that hackers-will-be-hackers and there was nothing, NOTHING Sony could have done to prevent this. If that somehow helps you sleep better at night, it's all good.

To recap: Sony went cheap because they were spending their own money. Bad things happened and in the end it will cost Sony much more in damaged reputation and even money by the time the class-action lawsuits are settled.

    Wow. This is incredibly uninformed.

Spoiler: business model and security structure are not linked. This would have happened if Sony charged for PSN, because the problem had nothing to do with the way Sony monetizes PSN.
