Some early mocks Draftsite.com 1 Terrence Cody, NT 2Jordan Shipley, WR 3Kam Chancellor, S Walterfootball.com 1Dan Williams, NT 2Arrelious Benn, WR 3Deunta Williams, FS nfldraftblitz.com 1Mardy Gilyard, WR NFLDraftDog 1Everson Griffen, DE DraftCountDown.com 1Terrence Cody, NT Football Futures 1Ricky Sapp, LB/DE A lot of ppl seem to think we need a NT for some reason.
This wouldnt be bad but i think we can do better. No problem with any of the players I just have higher hopes then a bunch of decent players and nothing exceptional. This is my favorite of the bunch but I dont think Benn will be there in round two. I also dont know if Deunta Williams is worth a round three selection. Nice start, where's the rest Dont like it already Ok start, depends what we do with the rest of the picks. No thanks on sapp in round one. Too inconsistent. As far as Nose Tackle...we most certainly need to draft or sign one. Im not banking on a 36 year old ferguson coming off a serious injury. Where we select a nose tackle depends on what the staff thinks of Soliai as a starter....
Benn had just 3 TD's out of Juice Williams 22 in 2008. In 2009, he had only 2 of Williams 16 TD tosses. A speed guy with that few scores in a sometimes option offense? That sounds weird doesn't it? I would have expected more production than that.
I really like Mardy Gilyard, not sure of his size but he has the intangiables that I like in player, let alone a Wr. I doubt Mt Cody is there when we draft but if he was I'd have to take him.
I kinda feel the same with Cody. He's kinda had his thunder stolen a bit this year, but he's still an incredible NT prospect.
Heck yes, I've heard the criticism's " a fat likes to be fat" etc, but he can play NT and while he may not look pretty in a speedo, he can play NT. I mean shoot, Wilfork is going what, 360 or 380 this year?
the one that only had one pick were one round mock drafts... I'm sure you knew that but I just wanted to clairify that point.
That would be a bad thing if Juice Williams weren't more inconsistent then the weather. Ya I knew that....it was more that judging a draft off just a first rounder is near impossible. the first rounder can be great or terrible but the actual draft has to include the other 6 picks.
I think it does matter. You could have said the same for some of Ted Ginn's career at OSU. I know Benn has garnered more yards, but he really doesn't get in the end zone that often. Golden Tate for instance as scored 10+ TD's in a season twice. I don't know if Benn has 10 for his career. I would be a little wary of a WR who doesn't score TD's in the Big 10. Penn State is almost always good for some nice plays due to their dump and bail technique. There are some under average teams in the Big 10.
Im not saying it doesnt matter, Im saying he needs a Qb who can get him the ball in scoring situations. Or at the very least get him the ball in situations where he can create a play. I think Juice Williams does a horrendous job of reading coverage and going through progressions. I watched the Illini play a few games this year and in the games vs Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue and Cincinnati and I was appalled at how bad Williams was. He missed Benn open a minimum of 3x in each game on the opponents side of the 50.
IMO lack of TDs for a WR is a red flag. Like any other stat it's just part of the picture, but it's definitely something that would give me pause. I think that it may be because working in the more confined spaces of the redzone is more similar to the coverage that NFL WRs will face. So I like to see WRs who do well there against top competition. Obviously you don't eliminate WRs who just didn't get the opportunities, but it's something I give weight to.
I think if you watch Benn in that offense, you sort of understand there are other things going on there. Benn is a big target with acceleration and very good hands, the ability to adjust on the ball. He's been wasted in that offense.
I know they like their tight ends and will use them to the detriment of the wide outs at times, and the general play calling and decision making of Williams. However, it does bear watching that he wasn't able to elevate himself to the QB's #1 target. I think has qualities you like, but there are also question marks about some of his performances as well. It isn't the only thing, but I think needs to be examined a hell of a lot more. I mean, he could be the next Troy Williamson. (Probably a bad example, just meaning a speed guy that does not produce). Edit: This may be a serious case of comparison between 2008 and 2009 for Benn. See what "things" he did the same, in comparison to how far Williams fell off the earth. I know it will affect Benn's production, but I want to see it is all one sided.
