What you say is absolutely true, except the 8 years. I know for sure that Diesel was cheaper than gasoline through parts of 2003 and most of 2004. At least in New York, Maryland, and Virginia anyway. That's when I owned my Jetta, and it was one of the major factors in my decision to buy it. By the time I got rid of it in late 2005 Diesel was more expensive than gasoline. But I agree that it doesn't look like it will be cheaper than gas anytime soon.
