After almost three years in the league, some are starting to wonder if the San Francisco 49ers made a mistake taking QB Alex Smith with the first pick in the 2005 draft. The quarterback position was not considered the strong suit of the 2005 draft and Smith was generally considered the top choice with Aaron Rodgers and Jason Campbell next in line.

No doubt about it. I knew Smith was a mistake for the 49ers. I was just glad they took them so that it would be certain we wouldn't.

Smith has some ability. Sometimes it comes down to just being in the right place, with the right people to enable your best abilities to come to the front. Smith is a smart and able QB. But he was definitely the typed that should have been brought along slowly.
