short passing game is the cure for this offense

seems to me that our passing woes could be fixed with a short passing game philosophy. both the starting running backs are great at catching the ball, along with camarillo, hartline and bess, they have a lot of options for Henne that are sure handed. they need to speed up the tempo of the passing game and remove the chance of Henne holding the ball too long and getting sacked as he currently has a propensity to do.

also, lining up with a 3 WR set, plus the 2 backs gives Henne 5 possible targets if they all go out. the running backs can both go out or stay in to pass block on certain plays. insert ginn every now and then as a decoy, reverses, a a legit deep shot down field.

getting in a spread formation could also force the defense to bring out more DB's and give brown and williams a better matchup up front to run against.

    thoughts?

the problem with our receivers is getting separation down field. I think they fair better when running shorter routes as they have more quickness than top speed. hartline's catch and run on that quick slant was a good example.

I think they need to setup more screen plays too. brown and williams are just deadly in space.

This is essentially what we did with Penny last year. Henne picked apart the Jets with a short passing game a few weeks back. Of course, this is all contingent on the O-Line giving Henne time and the receivers getting open.

If Ginn isn't in the line up they are going to move the Safety down in the box thus the running game is going to take a hit. Ginn is the only player on the team that can burn the defense and it does matter if he is on the field. Whether he catches it or not just the fact he is in there they have to respect his speed.

I have to agree with hardkorexxx....if the line blocks well then the short game can be successful. Plus the deep game is possible too if once again, the line blocks well. We have to give Henne time to throw the ball.

we are a power running team that should primarily use play action to catch defenses cheating up. Although i am a fan of spread formations and 3 and 4 WR sets I think we should stay within the philosophy of our strengths.

Having said that, we have two WRs IMO to currently try to exploit certain mismatches. Ginn's speed has to be used. He needs to continue to be sent on flys and posts, periodically have him run, stop and sit for some possession receptions. The two things I would really try to add to his reportoire are slants and or more west coast type crossing or drag patterns where you try to clear out the middle of the field and get him a horizontal lane as opposed to a vertical lane. Also I think its time to start sending him in motion to see if we can get more favorable matchups. This has the additional benefit of forcing defenses to declare what they are doing often times

Hartline has a nice blend of athleticism, hands and speed. He's nothing as a number one and needs to be allowed to attack defenses number two CB where he has a chance of faring well. Its a complete waste of his talent to have him go against the Revis' of the NFL. He smply doesnt have the athleticism to do any damage and will likely put up gooseeggs. To me Hartline is a perfect intermediary crossing pattern receiver that can find those soft areas and can occasionally bait a sleeping CB into jumping a route and beating them deep. Keep him attacking the middle in the 10 to 20yard area. Keep Ginn attacking deep and have Bess play the safety valve under ten yards. Camarillo is like Hartline

It may be a stupid question, but I'm wondering about Pat White. He is probably short as Michael Vick, so can he try to run and pass like Vick did?

I know that Pat White is one of the Parcell's guys.

Seems like the offense we were running with Pennington. I agree 100% on the philosophy, we just would need a lot better receivers to pull it off...especially on the tight end side
