http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/13/glen-coffee-retires/ Unbelievable he quit. Everyone was expecting big things out of him as long as he remained relatively healthy. Now the Niners are stuck with talented but forever busted up Frank Gore and little known Anthony Dixon.
I wouldn't say they are stuck with Dixon, who I believe led the SEC in rushing last year - I could be wrong. Dixon is no slouch, I'd wager within the next 18 months Dixon unseats Gore as the starter.
Dixon might be a solid RB in the NFL but its uncertain. But we do know the Niners love SEC players so if Dixon doesn't pan out maybe they can trade for Darren McFadden.
Rumor has it Coffee is planning on going into a Christian Ministry. To which I say good for him, I also think quitting one's job is not a good kick off to going into ministry..things are much tougher than just heat and bodies banging off of you. strictly my 2 cents.
yeah Pads I was going to say obviously something else is with this story besides him just retiring or Singletary's tough training camp... but dude make a little scratch first then retire...geez..
Guess I no longer have to think about Lucky walking with his donkey bringing us all coffee when I hear this dude's name.
Coffee has a lot of talent IMO. I am shocked by his retirement but I wish him well. I'd be surprised if he unseated Gore. Gore is underrated IMO. The guy does everything.
The reason i say that is that over the next 18 months or two years etc Gore will likely start to see the affects of having multiple knee injuries in college, and the workload he's had in the pros. Gore has 1392 touches in 5 years; 278.4 touches a season. Not ridiculous I know, but not exactly a light workload either. Plus given that Gore picks up injuries at a decent rate, I can certainly see it happening. I know Gore plays through a lot, but how long he continue to do it? I just have a feeling Gore gets hurt, misses a little time, and Dixon takes control of the job. Dixon is a good back man. Also don't forget the 49ers are breaking in two rookies along the OL, so they may be more inclined to try and run the ball early in the season than normal as these guys get their feet wet. They don't want Alex Smith to wind up on the ground too much early on. The funny part is that the offense works better when they open it up for Smith, but Singletary likes a run first type of offense. Jimmy Ray has a tough job there.
