Senior Bowl practice Wrap Up

Oregon’s Casey Matthews and Ohio State’s Ross Homan both struggled to hold up at the point of attack throughout the week when asked to anchor vs. tight ends during run drills. However, the one guy who did do a nice job was Washington LB Mason Foster. He’s a natural striker who finds the football quickly and runs well in pursuit. He isn’t elite physically in any area of the game, but he’s just a solid football player who showed well for himself this week and looks like a solid 2nd-3rd round pick who can mature into a starter early in his NFL career.

Of the three north quarterbacks, Nevada's Colin Kaepernick has shown the most steady development from day to day. On Thursday morning, he surprised with his quickness on a quarterback draw and threw a couple of beautiful downfield passes. Those included the throw of the day, a deep sideline throw to East Carolina's Dwayne Harris, who dropped the ball in the end zone. And after a rough early stretch on his touch with short passes, Kaepernick started throwing nice fades in goal-line situations. On the down side, he threw what should have been a pick to North Carolina cornerback Kendrick Burney (who's been one of the defensive stars of the week), which Burney dropped and subsequently disciplined himself with 10 push-ups. Kaepernick is rising at the right time and starting to put it all together.

Arkansas tight D.J. Williams(notes) is a very solid player on the field and a definite character odd it. The self-
admitted Twitter addict doesn't possess amazing speed, but he shows a good ability to turn his body to get open, and he had excellent form when bringing the ball in. Legendary Raiders receiver Fred Biletnikoff always used to say that to catch consistently, your hands have to work together, and Williams has that ability. Stay tuned for a feature on him later.

Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin: Big body (6-7, 315). That’s the first thing you notice when you see him in full gear and off of the field. Strength at the point of attack—can take on a bull rush—and good enough feet to get back and attack speed off of the edge because of his reach. There is no doubt Carimi can win up front in the run game and I think the tape from these practice sessions will answer some questions about his pass protection skills against good competition. With Carimi, you are drafting a physical offensive tackle that has the tools to play a long time at both tackle positions in the NFL. We talked to him during the week, and the NFP’s Greg Gabriel (who has over 20-plus years of scouting experience in the NFL) said that the Wisconsin O-Lineman is the type of player you want in the locker room.

Last night we spoke about Tyron Smith and his draft projection, mentioning the USC underclassman landing as early as the ninth spot to the Dallas Cowboys. A source from the team we spoke with today told us that while they feel Smith is a terrific prospect the team is leaning towards acquiring an offensive tackle that is ready to start from day one. With the lockout looming that’s unlikely to be Smith who won’t be able to participate in rookie mini-camp or OTA’s the way things look. Bottom line, don’t expect Dallas to pull the trigger Smith with the 9th pick.

Not suprised at all about Ponder

Christian Ponder, Florida State

What I liked: When I scout quarterbacks here, I tend to ignore what others say and just judge the player on his practice performances through the week. Ponder had lots of injury issues coming into Mobile, but if you just base everything on what he did here, you’d have to be optimistic for his future. He has pretty solid arm strength and throws particularly well on the run. I also liked his pass placement for the most part. You can see he has an idea where he wants to go with the football at most times. That’s a pretty good trait for such a young quarterback. He showed a lot of potential this week, and considering his injury history, he’s probably well ahead of where many personnel evaluators thought he would be at this point.

What needs improvement: At times, Ponder became too much of an arm thrower instead of getting his body into his passes. He was very inaccurate on several deep passes because he did not always get his shoulders squared up. Also, some of his passes to wide-open receivers sailed a bit.

Round projection: Third.
Ricky Stanzi, Iowa

What I liked: Stanzi has the ideal size (6-4, 220) that scouts are looking for in a quarterback. He clearly has better-than-average arm strength. When he sets his feet and gets his body or torque into his passes, he’s fairly accurate. Stanzi leaves you always wanting more, which is not such a bad thing.

What needs improvement: Stanzi has inconsistent passing mechanics, which need to be fixed. He needs to get with a good quarterback coach who can break down his mechanics. Once he is able to set his feet properly and consistently step into his throws, Stanzi will have a chance to become a factor in the future. He has potential.
