Okay, so if I like the Evan Williams 1783, what's a good recommendation along those lines but even better overall? I had it with a splash of real Coke to help transition my palate since I'm not used to sipping neat or on the rocks yet, and I was surprised how nice it is. I seriously don't recall Jack or Jim & Coke tasting this good from back in my college days when I'd drink it to get drunk. Don't know if my palate is more evolved but this actually tastes savory like a good beer or wine. Here's the Wine Enthusiast review of it:
To be honest Brother, hung around both, prefer folks with a couple of drinks in them over a bit of the MJ, drinks tend to loosen people up, MJ tends to make folks introspective and not very much fun to be around
I have been a whiskey drinker for 25 years. I like them all....bourbon, scotch, Canadian whiskey, Irish whiskey and even rye whiskey (for Manhattans). For me, each has a time and a place. Gun to my head, I'd say I prefer scotch the most. It is never "hot" like bourbon can be. The lower alcohol content makes it more conducive to social settings (i.e. I can drink more of it without being dragged out of the bar/restaurant). And as someone pointed out earlier, I like the differences in taste between the various regions (Islay being my favorite). I don't put ice in it, which preserves the natural flavor. Bourbon on the other hand, is rough to drink neat (with a few exceptions). I am not a huge Irish Whiskey fan, but I absolutely love Middleton's. I'd say Canadian whiskey is my least favorite, but I will drink Crown Royale Special Reserve. I've seen the price issue raised, but the bourbons I gravitate towards are pretty pricey. So it really doesn't factor into my decision process. And the only time I ever mix whiskey is in a Manhattan. I never drink whiskey and coke, etc. I will conclude by saying that scotch was an acquired taste for me. I thought it tasted awful when I first tried it in my mid twenties. Thought the same in my early 30's. But in the past 10 years I have developed quite a passion for it. I certainly understand when people say they don't care for it. Oh, if anyone was a Johnnie Walker Gold fan, try the Platinum. I've been though 2 bottles already. Not quite as smooth as the gold was, but very flavorful. Actually, I think it would appeal to a bourbon drinker.
My favourite too. Just raised a glass of my Islay favourite Ardbeg for the New Year too, I love the peaty and smoky taste of Islay whiskies. Because of the Islay influence, I also love Black Bottle blended whisky too.
Virgil's Cream Soda and 1783 Bourbon has become my new fave drink. Blends together seamlessly and so you can still fully appreciate the bourbon. Makes for a finish that's long, complex, and delish, no sh-t. Indescribably good. Savory good. The taste and finish rival that of a great Belgian Dubbel or Quadrupel [beer for you idiots who don't know better]. If you're a bourbon fan but would like to be able to sip for hours, I'd definitely give this a try.
I love their stuff too so I decided to mix a 4-pack of cream soda, coke, and root beer to experiment with. The coke and root beer with bourbon were both nice.... but when I got to the cream soda it was just--- wow. With the coke & root beer, as good as they were, you could still differentiate them from the bourbon. However with the cream soda it's like its one drink, just perfectly seamless, to the point it doesn't need ice and like a great beer got better as it warmed and opened. Plus it maintains the bourbon's color. I appreciate a good finish to a drink and this stuff has got some yum factor.
Substitute the amaretto with Galliano, and that is a Sloe Comfortable Screw Against the Wall. In case people don't know drink names are often the recipes. So for example... Sloe/Slow = sloe gin Comfortable/Comfort = SoCo Screw = originally it just meant OJ I believe, but it has come to also mean OJ & Vodka (screwdriver) Wall = Galliano.
Off to the liquor store for some Evan Williams 1783, I'll try to find some Virgils but I doubt its available in my area. I'll try some decent Cream Soda. Virgils Cream Soda/Evan Williams curious.....
What the **** is wrong with you Sational? That crap Evan Williams 1783 tastes like Early Times....its been a long, long, long time since I drank Early Times, but thats something your taste buds never forget.
Okay, I'm trying some Crown Royal. I'll save the 1783 for you when you come by. I'll spike it with some Cocaine for ya.
LOL, well drink whatever bourbon you like ya sissy. 1783 is a highly regarded inexpensive bourbon so perhaps you should go see the tastebuds doctor next week.
Too much Kool-Aid? I used to hate cream soda but in the past year have found myself liking it almost as much as good root beer for some reason. Otherwise I'd be thoroughly disliking it with bourbon. What inexpensive bourbon do you gravitate to the most BTW?
I do not drink sodas of any kind. Having said that, I did drink 1/2 a Coke back in March just to remember the thing. Now, as we all know Bourbon/Whiskey comes from Kentucky, like 90%. So, I prefer Jack. Which I will try next with Creme Soda. Mostly Canadian Whiskey to be exact. Either way I'm getting a good buzz going....lol
