Way to go out on a limb. You could pretty much say a team will end up mediocre on the field, and you would be right 80% of the time.

Winning changes everything, 10 and 6 is not average, and puts holes in theories that the personnel is not good enough, especially with how we lost 4 of the games on that record and what was going on in the process.

10-6 is an outlier in the trend. It should not be considered.

Rod Graves is a far better GM than Ireland, he only had 2 losing seasons in 6 years and his team was 4-2 in the playoffs and were basically a fingertip catch away from being 5-1 with a Super Bowl title. Lol I mean seriously, don't think that just because Graves is no longer a GM anymore that means you can still even put him and Ireland in the same sentence. The only reason Ireland isn't in the same situation is because our owner is a ****ing idiot.

Important things to look at when it comes to how the front office is doing..

How young is my team..that's important to me.

Where is my team at in terms of its salary cap.

Where is their arrow at this point..record, how well their playing, where are their strengths and weaknesses.

What's the Qb situation look like.

    What's the defense look like.

Do we have all of our draft picks going into the following season.

All of those things, if we finish this season strong, will be in positive lights.

The difference between 7-9 and 8-8 is insignificant. They had the one year where they made a run b/c they had a QB. Now Miami has a QB and their future beyond this season is far brighter due to the guys that this GM brought in.

They won 9 games the year they made the Super Bowl, which is a winning record, you know, something that we've failed to accomplish for 4 straight years. The next year they won 10 games and won a playoff game. Then 2 of the next 3 seasons Cards finish with a losing record and Graves is fired, we're sub .500 for 4 straight seasons and yet Ireland keeps his job. How sad that the owner of the Arizona Cardinals has higher standards for his franchise than the owner of the Dolphins has for his.

You said yourself development is key. How can we judge a GM who has had noone to develop his talent?

I'm not a huge supporter, I said before the year he should get this season before we determined his fate. I can't say I'm okay firing him after seeing the team improve. Now if we take a step back next season...he should be gone.

Only those with the most simplistic understanding of football focus on the record. They fail to consider the team going through coaching or scheme changes (or whether the GM in name only actually had final say). The standard should be building the team. Miami's future is brighter than Arizona's b/c they have talent at the key positions Philbin identified as the key to winning.

You make or point out some positives to be sure. I also believe in 17 and like you also feel he is the singularly most important key.

As I have said before Ireland has made some good decisions , he is not devoid of football acumen , but imo as I have also said many times and was the first to say it ( at least on here ) he is the poster boy for the Peter Principle at least to me and to date. Can he wash that away? I suppose so , it is possible , I don't think so and would not bet on it nor endorse him by retaining him counting on it.

I understand it is a fine line , to make yet another change . Does that impact the progression of the team , how does that impact the coaching staff , would a new GM perhaps not tear down but renovate? Maybe that leads to no change , maybe mostly because of fear. I sense we have hung on to him because of that , the Parcells thing , who I have always disliked despite his previous success and was against from the start here , the Sparano hire which is tied to Parcells etc etc. You have a higher , maybe not but a wide margin , but it is higher , value on some ( not all ) of our players and their talent level . That is fine , some of that is yet to be determined. I think he has mismanaged the draft more than some do , I understand that aspect of this debate . I don't expect perfection but do see some troubling aspects , fairly high picks not panning out to their acquisition costs and this also applies to FA. His personna is also a part that I think has and can be a negative and I get the sense that has yet again happened with Philbin. Maybe just pure perception on that , but I don't have the feeling they are one in their vision. That is more than a bit troubling.

Obviously I want to make the playoffs , and would not trade that for an Ireland dismissal , not hoping to fail so he gets fired , but I fear missing them but him being retained with yet another poor decision by this team . I honestly believe we would be better off both next year and going forward by bringing in another GM . That our future success would be more positive by doing this , so that I guess is my bottom line. I do however understand it would have to be done right and that presents challenges , otherwise it could cause issues that lead to more treading of the water than going forward. I do get that , but sometimes decisions need to be made . Often teams or businesses or organizations flounder because there is more a fear or a lack of want to make a tough , bold decision.

Said I wouldn't keep harping but just wanted to respond to your post(s) which are presented positively and do offer good insight even if we may not totally agree.

Now , let's do an Al Davis and JUST WIN BABY.

    Cheers.

I want to change because I think there is very little doubt that he can't make the decisions to get this team over the top. His ability to manage the entire roster is horrible.

Again, 10-6 is an outlier. This is a team with 7 win talent, and it has been a team with 7 win talent for going on 5 years now. He has been unable to make the personnel decisions to get the talent level of this team above the 7 win plateau.

Matt Millen. Ouch! Just kidding guys!

I want Ireland gone because he can't put together a coherent roster after being at the top of it for years. Yes he found us a QB. Thanks and good bye. Imagine if the Colts got rid of Polian years ago and put together great teams around Peyton. We need someone better.

If this team wins out in the fashion that they have, under the conditions that they have had to deal with, it does make it a very tough decision if your gonna make the change..

I'll tell ya why, if Ryan Tannehill wins out and beats every afc east opponent, and the steelers in their park to finish the season it will be because of Ryan Tannehill making plays and is progressing as a Qb...are you saying that Sherman and Philbin should get responsibility for drafting Ryan?

  15. dolfan22

dolfan22 Season Ticket Holder Club Member

No I am not but obviously they would have had some significant input , and that Sherman was linked as he was , was a unique aspect.

Are you saying that Jeff Ireland should get the sole credit for drafting him? That somehow 17 was under the radar and not perceived as warranting being picked ? Not really sure of your point to be honest , with respect.

Miami kind of needed a QB , and we picked one . That he has played as well as he has is great imo but hardly revolutionary in that teams should solidly hit with very high picks , no? It is like how some posters kept wanting to credit Ireland ( or Fat Bill ) for picking Long , and that that for a few short years he played well to very well. Number one overall , you better hit that hard. Literally most posters here can or could have made positive picks with the number one or the number two or the number three or the number eight picks in a draft . If a GM couldn't do that he has no business ever being in that position . IMO you don't get standing ovations for decisions that are hard to not screw up.

Sure he did actually make the pick , so sure he gets credit , but lets not pretend it was Russell Wilson in the third that was unearthed and identified by Ireland's acumen , and personally I like 17 better than Wilson ( not saying he is better or will be , but just like him better ).

It should be considered. We have the talent to do it and be better then that record. The GM brought that talent here.

Some people on here would rather the team lose the rest of the games, just so we can clean house. What kind of fan is that?

Yes, because this team doesn't have any difference makers on offense. Ryan is a developing player, but he is not a difference maker yet. The Dolphins foolishly thought Mike Wallace was a difference maker. He's not. He's a one trick pony that they overpaid to get.

Yes they should hit on their high picks, I'm pretty sure he listened to his staff on the pick as well, I don't think he would of strapped him with a Qb that they didn't think could beat out the guy that had tons of inside info on..There's text out there that shows Ireland was also very high on Ryan.

My point is about winning the next three, the Qb will have to play at a high level, these guys collectively selected that dude, along with the rest of the team that got them there, they might wanna reassess their relationship if they make this run..

I think we've seen enough development out of the QB and a few other positions that I don't believe 10-6 would be that much of an outlier. Having said that though, I'm not convinced Jeff can get this team over the 9, 10 win playoff team hump to one that's a real SB contender.

But 9-10 win teams are real Super Bowl contenders. Each of the last 3 Super Bowls were won by 9 or 10 win teams.

It will be interesting to see how or if things change now that Engroff was promoted to National Scout, Anthony Hunt's former title. Wonder if Cody Rager will be able to find these Western Area gems the way Engroff did.

Saying 10 and 6 is an outlier has 0 accountability for context..how is that not progress, apparently you just don't think he can get them over the hump because of the mistakes you've seen..

While you may be right, I can't remove a large variable from 10 and 6 and on a high..

I'm arguing based on best case scenarios because I think 10 and 6 is certainly attainable, what if we do, what if we play well when we get in the playoffs..can you be so sure the mistakes you've seen could not be outweighed by this scenario?

Well then, hell's fire, we may as well just shut down the entire forum. The great Stringer Bell has deemed that no one is capable of making an informed comment about the Dolphins.

If you don't like the commenting on who decided about Brenner, then why participate?

So we can only talk about what happens on the field, and how players play, etc? Are you sure folks here are knowledgeable enough to handle that?

    :pity:

Nothing short of winning the Superbowl will change my mind, and even then, I'm not sure I'd keep him because I don't think he can keep the team competitive over the long haul. Even if we won the Superobowl, I'd probably fire him for the way he treats the media, the fans, and the players.

I think Stringer is pretty clear that his comments are limited to criticisms of middle management moves and who was responsible for which decisions -- things for which none of us have any actual reliable information. No need to shut down the board -- it is perfectly reasonable to debate what happens on the field or the overall merits of personnel decisions by the team as a whole. But I agree that it is ridiculous to debate who wanted who drafted, fired, cut or put into the starting lineup in the absence of any actual evidence on those issues. What has been said over and over and over again is that it is a collaborative process and Ireland and Philbin and the other staffers work together on that stuff. The idea that Ireland was out willy nilly cutting players Philbin loved against his will while simultaneously twisting Philbin's arm to start other players Philbin hated strains credulity to an extreme degree.

People can discuss whatever they want, that doesn't make the opinions informed. I never said otherwise, I just said its silly to try and determine who decided about Brenner, when nobody here actually has information about how the decision was made. Its essentially the same as someone making an opinion on how someone played without actually watching the game, just looking at the box score.

I'd have to agree here. We have playmakers, but not difference makers a difference with a distinction. A Marshawn or Adrian Peterson who can throw defenders off of them. A Jimmy Graham. A QB/WR pair that when crunch time comes along, you look to make it happen. Brady/Gronk. Manning/Wayne/Harrison, etc.

We have a good group of guys. We don't have (yet) a grand slam on offense. A guy that 31 other teams say, I'd love to have that guy on our team. I will say you don't need that type of player to win a SB (Ravens?) but we don't have one. A good group of guys can come together at the right time and win everything though (Ravens ...)

lol..KB, nothing short of a Super Bowl victory eh?? So your saying that we could win our next 3, then another three in the playoffs including beating the broncos in their house against manning, all in the 2nd year, and you would still want Ireland's ***..

I don't know where to go from here in this debate..you must really think extremely highly of these coaches to get the bad talent on this team to that level in their 2nd year..

That's ridiculous bro, come on you know that.

Actually, there is no guess work at all.

Jeff Ireland has final say on all personnel moves, therefore any bad moves made are on him.

Jeff Ireland DOES NOT have the power to hire and fire the head coach. That power is reserved to Stephen Ross only, which is the case with most NFL teams. In most set ups, the GM cannot fire the coach. The owner does it.

Dawn Aponte negotiates the contracts of the players that Jeff decides to sign. Outside of that, she has no say in what personnel is added. She negotiates, and she sets the budget.

Joe Philbin has control of the roster on game day and control over the coaching staff. He may have input into the roster, but he does not make the decision about who is on the 53 man roster.

No, this is absolutely not true. Jeff Ireland does not sign the contracts, and he does not sign the checks.

    Correct.

She sets the budget. That inherently grants her a certain level of authority over who is signed.

In the other thread you bashed Ireland for courting a coach before the current coach was fired, and called him an *******.

If Ireland has no power to fire a coach, and Ross wants him to talk to someone....which is it. Your hate for him has you contradicting yourself.

Can you tell me what he was and wasn't responsible for while Parcells was buying the groceries...I'm sure he would be able to do that on his next interview, and his record will speak for itself, whatever that record is we'll never know, that's why I can only judge him based on the last three offseasons.

Jury is out until the end of the season.
