I happened to enjoy Henning calling those long, hard fought field goal drives.........oh wait

so what plays do you call instead knowing the limitations of what henning has to work with. If Henning is one of the worst coordinators in the NFL explain how he got into the Super Bowl five years ago. Explain how we scored more points on the Steelers then five other coordinators and scored more points on the Jets then another five coordinators

I'm talking about the first two drives. When we had a chance to take control of the game. Run. Then a one man route that Pitt covered so Henne had to throw it away, then a terrible job by Ronnie Brown letting Woodley run right by him and forced Henne to throw it away again.

Then, 3 straight runs on the next series...including the same exact play on 2nd and 3rd down.

To me, it's inexcusable. I thought Henning was scared to let Henne loose, and as we saw with Henne's performance the rest of the way, it was terrible play calling.

Again adam, I don't dislike Henning. I think he's ok, but sometimes he's infuriating.

how is that horrible play calling. henne repeatedly shows he cant pass in the red zone. repeatedly. we cant run and we cant pass in the red zone. What plays are going to magically create touchdowns in that type of scenario. We were #2 in red zone last year. pretty sure we were good in the red zone in 2008. how can henning's playcalling possibly be the cause when he has repeatedly proven to be one of the best red zone coordinators in the league

I don't know about can't pass. Pretty much 1/3 of his throws in the red zone have resulted in TDs. He may not be Aaron Rodgers, but he hasn't shown he can't pass in the red zone.

I really think the running game is the root of the red zone woes, especially since Henne was a 92 rated passer in the RZ last year.

He got into a Superbowl riding the coattails of a great defense.

He scored more points than 5 other OC's on the Steelers thanks to 2 turnovers, and a marvelous game by Henne using pump fakes and going through his progressions more than I've ever seen him do so. Props to the QB coach.

He scored more points than 5 coordinators in the Jets game because he called a great game. Even the sun shines on a dog's *** some days.

I know, and that's fine, but to go right back to the same play on 3rd down against the Steelers? I didn't like the call at all.

Dude, we were good in the redzone the last 2 years because our running game was very good. This year, not even close.

agree completely but we cant turn into the colts either just because the running game doesnt work. i think we all have to accept that we are getting the best production we can hope for from what we have. i think we draft a RB high next year. henne with a running game is far more effective. without one he is up and down

the panthers scored 29 points against the vaunted dallas defense in the first round, 29 poiNTS AGINST the Rams in rd 2, 14 points aginst the eagles in the championship round and 29 points against the patriots in the super bowl.

even if you take away the 6 points scored of the turnovers only the Ravens scored more -17. four other coordinators scored less. please try again

Well, we're arguing if Henne or Henning is more to blame for offensive woes... not a good problem for us to need to figure out. I don;t care which answer is right, we are the losers in the situation.

Vs. the Cowboys. That Panthers D held the Cowboys to 10 points and 204 yards, as well as a few sacks. The Panthers offense was given great field position all night with 2 bad punts from Toby Gowin, as well as 2 other punts where the Panthers had good field position. Julius Pepper also intercepted a pass and brought it to Cowboys 11 yard line. All of this great field position resulted in 5 FG's. Sound familiar?

Vs. the Rams. The Panthers defense held a great Rams offense to only 23 points, including picking off Marc Bulger 3 times. Mushin Mohammed had a fumble recovery for a TD, while Kasay added 3 FG's. Yet again the offense struggled to score TD's.

Vs. the Eagles. The Panthers defense held the Eagles 11th ranked offense to 3 points. McNabb was sacked 5 times, threw 3 picks, and was injured in the game. His backup Troy Detmer threw a pick himself. Once again, good field position, still struggled to score TD's.

Vs. the Patriots. Neither team did much in the 1st half. Patriots had 3 great opportunities, but it resulted in a missed 31 yard field goal, 10 yard loss on an end around to take them out of FG range, and a blocked punt. Delhomme was terrible in the 1st half. Both Delhomme and Brady exploded in the 2nd half and the Patriots eventually won.

There was nothing really impressive about the Panthers offense during this SB run. And most importantly, this has nothing to do with the fact that Henning has been an average to terrible play caller since he got here. Senility would be my guess. I don't think the guy is as clueless as his playcalling makes him seem though I could be wrong I suppose.

honestly if you break down the run game its really not that bad - granted i am taking out sack yardage lost and lou's 1 yard plunges but here is ronnie and ricky's breakdown

    bills game
    ronnie - 5 ypc - ricky - 3.4 ypc - totals 127 - 4 ypc - not great but ok
    vikes game
    ronnie - 6.2 ypc - ricky - 3.0 - totals 110 - 5.1 ypc - actually ypc very good
    jets game
    ronnie 4.9 ypc - ricky - 4.0 - totals 82 - 4.8 ypc - good ypc just didnt run enough
    pats game
    ronnie 2.5 ypc - ricky 8.0 - totals 83 - 4.4 - gettin our *** whupped so had to pass
    pack game
    ronnie 3.8 ypc - ricky - 4.9 - totals 137 - 4.3 ypc - good
    steelers game
ronnie 1.6 ypc - ricky - 4.4 - totals 62 - 3.1 - not good should have gave ronnies carryies to ricky - actually averaged more ypc than the steelers

so really in each game 1 of the 2 (ronnie or ricky) actually averages very good ypc, henning needs to see that and stop the every other possesion switching rb's and o with the hot hand

Don't tell me. Tell the guys who refuse to see any wrong in this terrible OC because once upon a time his defense led the team he was calling plays for to a SB.

not to nitpick but we're actually 24th in scoring... you should do it by PPG since some teams have had byes, some haven't...

Running the ball counts as a bad play call?

The second play wasn't a one-man route, and nor did Dan Henning call for Ronnie Brown to throw a terrible block. You're complaining about execution, rather than play calling.

Two straight runs isn't conservative, and nor is running the ball on 3rd and 2. Nor is running the same play, either, especially after it just worked. An offense might not have more than a handful of bread and butter run plays that make up 80% of what they do.

And we really weren't all that good, as evidenced by the way we played when we actually got in the playoffs.

the only two worth keeping are Nolan & Ireland
    I have little sympathy
for the rest of the cadre running this show
    however
    Henning doesn't throw the football,
Henne is responsible for passing the ball
    and
Henning doesn't blow the defensive line off the ball
    consistently to open running lanes,
the offensive line has to win that battle.
    futhermore
we have a HeadCoach that can over-ride
any bad decisions a coordinator makes on the field
    and
it is his responsibility to do so in the interest of the team

the buck stops with Sparano

So should Sparano have over-rid the Nolan play calls on the Steelers 13 play 86 yard TD drive that was more like 106 yards because they had two holding penalties?

What if Sparano wanted to run the ball on the Bess 26 yard TD pass?

P.S. That stat includes defensive scores and kick return scores (we don't have any of those).

We're actually 24th in scoring offense (and part of that is definitely attributed to playing tough defensive teams and having already had our bye).

That said, it would be nice to see our offense come alive as the season progresses.
