That's assuming he's a reach. It all depends on how he's viewed by our FO. I honestly don't know, I'm not a scout. However, this is my approach: If I was GM, here's what I'd do every year with the draft: 1. Do I have a franchise QB? If no go to #2. If yes, then is he 30 or older? If no then skip the steps. If yes, go to #2. 2. Is there a QB available that I feel has a 65% or better chance to be a franchise? If no go to #3. If yes, draft him with your first pick. 3. Is there a QB available that I feel has a 50% chance or better to be a franchise? If no draft BPA. If yes, draft him with your second pick. And for Free Agency: 1. Do I have a franchise QB? If no go to #2. If yes, then is he 30 or older? If no then skip the steps. If yes, go to #2. 2. Is there a QB available that I feel has a 65% or better chance to be a franchise? If no go to #3. If yes, sign him without giving up picks the next year. 3. Is there a QB available that I feel has a 50% chance or better to be a franchise? If no then skip. If yes, sign him without giving up any picks. If Tannehill has a 65% of being a franchise QB, then spend the one. Plain and simple. An elite pass rusher is not going to get us to a SB.
A) The Giants defensive line would beg to disagree with you. No disrespect to Eli, he did his thing, but to try to belittle or gloss over the accomplishments of their line is a miscarriage of justice. B) Would 65% sure really your baseline for drafting a player in the 1st round? No offense, but I really don't believe that would work in the real world.
Their defensive line did not, in any way, win that game. Yes, it would. Again, what's the worst that happens?
Giants Defensive line forces a safety on the first play of the game. Their defensive line did not, in any way, win that game.
so what does that make Brady and the countless other NFL QBs who didn't start till their junior year? So you expect a freshman QB to start over a talented senior? What about that thing called "development"? .... or do you believe that how players are ranked coming out of high school is exactly how they'll be ranked or deserve to be ranked through college and into the NFL? Your theory, "Tannehill isn't good b/c he couldn't start ahead of those guys", backfires on you b/c the 1 year younger Tannehill took the starting job away from Jerrod Johnson, the country's #1 ranked athlete out of high school according to ESPN. That terrible rookie DE, Von Miller, was the nation's #37 DE recruit and rated 1 slot behind Tannehill in 2007. Von didn't become a full time starter till his junior year IIRC. I guess that makes him an NFL backup, too.
Eli carried that team in the fourth quarter all year, they wouldn't have sniffed the playoffs with a lesser Qb. Sure their Dline is a big reason why they are a championship team, we shouldn't be forgetting to improve our defense but the bottom line is that New York would never have come close to making the playoffs without an elite Qb, they'd be kind like us....
Ireland was mentored by Parcells and the later did not believe in college QBs who didnt start all/most of his college career. You have to ask yourself why Tannerhill couldnt beat Johnson for the QB job.
Respectfully, Crunch, we have to look at the circumstances surrounding Tannehill. 1. Ryan wasn't recruited as a QB by A&M coach, Dennis Franchione, but he chose to walk on anyways rather than attend a school who offered him. 2. Jerrod Johnson, the nation's 2006 #1 ranked "athlete", was one of Franchione's prized recruits IIRC. 3. Franchione liked athletes at QB, which is why Stephen McGee was so raw coming out despite a lot of starting experience. In this regard, it makes perfect sense that the nation's #1 "athlete" would be prioritized ahead of the younger Tannehill, especially when Johnson was Franchioine's guy. 4. When Mike Sherman took over in 08, he changed the offense to utilize more of a passing attack. --A&M passing under Franchione (05-07): 321, 330, and 376 attempts, 43 TDs, 22 INTs. --A&M passing under Sherman (09-11): 509, 515, and 537 pass attempts, 110 TDs, 50 INTs. 5. Moving to a more passing oriented offense, Sherman needed WRs. He saw Tannehill's athletic potential as a freshman so he put him there to help fill a need. Tannehill responded with Freshman All-American honors. That's a win for Sherman. 6. Tannehill still wanted to play QB. 7. Sherman gave him a chance b/c he was completely impartial since he wasn't involved in recruiting Johnson. 8. Tannehill nearly beat out Johnson despite his previous time at WR. I'd say that's handicapping Johnson. 9. Johnson in fact did lose the starting job to Tannehill and never gained it back. So I'm not sure why people think Tannehill couldn't beat out Johnson b/c he did beat him out.
I give a lot of credit to their defense but Eli won so many games for NY in the final quarter he cemented himself as an elite Qb and its not even questionable that he carried the team to the playoffs and title. Any other year and Manning is the MVP of the league, the passing stats put up by Rodgers and Brees were just ridiculous.
I do not agree, it is questionable. Maybe in the 80s Eli would be MVP of the league. Matthew Stafford would probably win over Eli and there is a good argument for Cam Newton as well.
My opinion is that Tannehill will never be anything more then a backup in the NFL. You obviously feel differently about his abilities at the next level. I have no idea at this time if you will be right or I will be. This forum is merely a place where fans can express their opinions and we all certainly don't agree all the time. I watched Tannehill play four times this past season and while I thought he was a decent college QB, I certainly didn't see anything from him that would lead me to believe that he will be a huge success in the NFL. Of course I have been wrong before and I may be wrong again. I just hope that the Dolphins don't use their first round pick on someone I think will be no better than Chad Henne in the NFL.
MVP isn't the offense player of the year... It's who the most valuable player was... Aaron Rodgers was definitely the MVP Bree's a close second.. Why would cam newton be an MVP this year? They had the same record as us..
Eli set records for 4th quarter passing stats, its hard to believe anyone could look at what he did this year and put anyone but Brees and Rodgers above him. He would have won easily any other year. Cam Newton deservedly gets praise for his play as a rook but he would not get one single MVP vote over Manning.
Cam Newton set records as well. That is without having two of the better receivers in the league. There are three other quarters and Eli was one of reasons why he needed to be so great in the 4th quarter.
LAWL @ Dennis Franchione. Alabama really dodged a bullet when he refused to sign that 10 year contract we offered him in 2001.
