Texas A&M's Damontre Moore belongs in the first-round discussion based on his motor and production. However, there are some questions about his natural explosiveness and pass-rush technique, concerns that Moore might be able to assauge throughout drills at Lucas Oil next week. An SEC underclassman who isn't a household name, Auburn's Corey Lemonier, has the natural athleticism to be an impact pass rusher at the next level. He needs to develop his strength and pass-rush moves. If Lemonier tests well, a team might be willing to take a chance on his upside much earlier than most project. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/rob-rang/21716397/2013-combine-defensive-end-preview --------------------------------------- Lemonier is clearly more explosive than Moore and he remains one of my favorites if we want to get an edge rusher to compliment Odrick, he's ground zero for me as a value edge rusher pick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuTwKEGs7uI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmH-8vFJl9o
Agree with his comments about Dion, Cory.. Combine baby..should be fun..I love the offseason, especially when your the Miami dolphins this year.
There are so many comedy draft jokers. Twitter has spawned an entire generation on nobodies who believe their opinion is absolutely right and there a phone call away from working for a pro team instead of fannying around on the Internet. That's not necessarily aimed at Rob Rang but still, anyone who thinks Damontre Moore is allaying fears when he runs around in shorts in a controlled environment is a total douchebag. If you want to see Damontre Moore allay fears, watch his games. Jokers.
There is a rather outspoken contingent of anti Moore folks around here, at least for his being a top half of the 1st player anyway. What is your opinion on where he should be listed on the overall rankings?
I'm not anti Moore per se, I just think it's hilarious watching all these people talk him up and that pat each other on the back because they think they're one step away from being an NFL GM. He certainly works hard and gets a lot of sacks because of that. He has an ability to loop up under his tackle and use his hands well inside, but you put him up against a good left tackle and he gets absolutely stoned. See the Alabama game. They kicked him around from Fluker to the real quality sophomore at left tackle and he had no business being there. He doesn't possess an elite first step to trouble good college right tackles. How's that going to work out against NFL left tackles. He has an athletic physique; he looks like DeMarcus Ware. He just doesn't play like him. Effort guy that I don't see ever pushing double digit sack totals. The whole idea of spending a top ten pick on him is ludicrous to me.
Oh and to answer you question, he doesn't look as good as Pernell McPhee did at Mississippi State. Nowhere near as good. That should be a barometer for a similar player.
The thing is, who did look good against Alabama? Jarvis Jones had his moments and also had his rear handed to him not only by the mammoth OTs but by the TEs as well, Williams and #84, I think Brian Vogler. Ogletree got pushed around even more. Te'o- 'nuff said. Xavier Nixon played well against Moore, but Moore did perform in general over his career, with 25 sacks or so in his college career and some good sideline pursuit and some good run defense- granted there are questions about his run defense. As to the combine- sure, the game tape tells the most, but count me in as to being interested as to how Moore tests out in shorts. Moore is a smooth athlete and I do like him, but he reminds me of Brandon Jenkins in terms of a 4/3 DE/OLB type who is effective, a good edge rusher but less than explosive and not a great first step- but if he's smooth at 4.67 I'll feel better about that than if he runs a 4.85. On film, if you compare Moore's explosiveness to Corey Lemonier, Jones or the undersized Michael Buchanan- it's just not there, he's a step below. Ansah remains the template imo of DEs that just get stonewalled by solid OTs- and I can't think of a single DE/OLB out there that doesn't come with questions, including Dion Jordan, who gets stonewalled pretty regularly himself. Should Moore be a top ten pick? I think that there's a chance that he won't be, but my best guess is that he is a 1 st rounder. There are good arguments against him, but taken a bit too far imo. If Ansah or Jordan went up against Alabama's OTs and TEs I think that the same questions would persist ie getting stonewalled, and put either of them up against Nixon or Menelik Watson and it might not be pretty- I think that Watson would dominate them both. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZlyDKSEgWU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZdaYYF2S_g This is certainly not Aldon Smith- Moore is a good edge rusher, can bend the arc, good pursuit- but yeah, I'd have the same questions as to how he'd fare against NFL OTs especially considering the UA and UF games. Good player, not great, and with questions- bottom line. At 6-4 250 and a smaller 4/3 DE, it would be nice to see more pop/explosion in his edge rush and 1st step. Here's Corey Lemonier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJFUIUgpizg It's just not the same, Lemonier is more explosive. I've seen maybe three guys this whole draft class that haven't shown significant flaws- Lotulelei, Warmack and Watson. I've tried to find weaknesses as per Menelik Watson, and so far I can't, the guy has impressed the hell out of me. Some are claiming he'll rip off a 4.7 at the combine, at which point he'll probably pull off a Joe Staley and be a 1st rounder- and he probably should be. Given the choice, I'd probably draft Watson over Moore, over Ansah for sure.
Look at Moore against Florida. Not one of his sacks comes from flat out beating a guy. They come from hustle. Great stuff. But hustle only gets you so far. If I'm spending a top ten pick on a defensive end I want two things. One of them is pass rush threat f the kind you get from Cam Wake or Aldon Smith. I don't want someone who can't beat a college RT because they're not quick enough and who has question marks against the run. Moore looks a good kid and a nice player, but a top ten pick? Either I've been doing this too long or I just have higher standards.
I wonder what brought this on. Hope it wasn't anything I said. If so, apologies. I just am not as hard on him as you are, though I do have questions as well.
I tend to agree, and again I think that a lot of the criticism of Moore is warranted, and it has somewhat effected my view of him as I revisited the UA and UF tapes. As hard as I've been on Ansah, he is a better run defender and I'll gladly give him that credit- but his pass rush of a QB in the pocket is concerning to say the least, and it just aggravates me. Moore, Ansah, Jordan take your pick- they all have questions and all three are great at backside pursuit but are questionable in terms of beating OTs at the LOS in pass situations- too many plays made after they give up actually beating the OT and they go into pursuit mode- not ideally what you want to see. Then on top of that Jordan and Moore are suspect vs the run. A healthy Carridine probably would have been the best option- I'd still rather get pursuit/contain guys like Ogletree and Porter at OLB, move Misi to MLB and get Lemonier to spell Odrick at DE in passing downs. But back to Moore- he can play some ball, despite the showings that he had in those two games. Judged by those games and he might not be a 4th rd pick much less a 1st- but his body of work as a whole is still pretty solid. If you go by the UA and UF games alone, Sean Porter deserves to get drafted ahead of Moore. 1. Ogletree 2. Elam 2. Watson 3. Wheaton 3. Lemonier 4. Porter 4. Jordan Reed (projected comp. pick) 5. Marquise Wilson 6. 7. Brandon McGee Get Jennings or Wallace in FA and that would work for me. I'd still like to fit Da'Rick Rogers in there somewhere, I'd also consider Marquise Goodwin and maybe TE Zach Sudfeld if no Jordan Reed. This year's draft is confusing, but that's half the fun. ps this guy looks interesting to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJtozzcJTNs
Just watching a bit on Moore and he does look like a "run around player", good motor and speed but not the quicks you'd like to see from a passrusher. He reminds me of Shaughnassey coming out 4 yrs ago and he did develop into a good player for the Raiders. That said, I could see Moore in Miami to play LDE if they cannot sign Starks and Odrick moves inside.
I think there is very little chance Jordan Reed goes any later than mid 3rd. Definitely not there at the end of the 4th. Nice mock draft if it fell that way though.
He flops on passrushing downs and pro football reference has him listed at RDE. Perhaps they would be interested to hear you editing suggestion.
I'm late to the party on Reed but who cares. BPK had a great post on him, I looked at some film and liked what I saw. I would love to give Egnew the benefit of the doubt, but I'm bothered by an anonymous teammate or two calling him a p****. If that's the case- screw it, get a solid TE in there to pair with Fasano and let Clay and Egnew fight for the other TE spot. Get it right, correct the problem and move on. Anyway, this Zach Sudfeld kid looks interesting, but I'm going on very little- there were some positive reports of the iirc East West Shrine game, he has size and wheels and the tape looks good, althogh it's obvioulsy not all that much tape. Judge for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnOPJrJkh1w
He may move over on a few pass rush downs, but from my viewing experience, he is lining up at LDE the vast majority of the time. Besides, your suggestion was to draft Moore to replace Odrick at LDE when he moves inside to DT because Starks is gone. Odrick does not play LDE. Pro Football Reference is wrong if they list Wake's base position as RDE, but you can go ahead and correct them if you like.
Yep, b/c the De's are the reverse of the OT's, the De going up against the LT is the RDE, the DE vs the RT is the LDE. Thus Odrick is listed as LDE/LE, but do feel free.
Oh hell no. Nothing to do with that at all Seriously. I liked the back and forth. Makes me question what I see and I hope vice versa. I get irked/amused by people on Twitter - not you - bleating on about how grandiose they think they are at being a draft blogger like they're set to step into a GM position very soon. Cracks me up.
Which is what you said he is originally, which is wrong. It's as if you just read Pro Football Reference and never watched the games.
Good stuff. Love Lemonier in the late third. My fave DE though is Tank. "One of the most-talented pass rushers in this draft class, Florida State's Cornellius Carradine, wasn't even a starter at the beginning of the season. But after an injury, “Tank” stepped up and had an excellent senior season until he tore his ACL in late November, which clouds his NFL Draft future. The progress of Carradine's knee could determine whether he is selected in the first round or falls to the second day." I'm going to be very curious what the medical reports are on him.
