Exactly. Seldom is one player rated head and shoulders above the rest of your entire draft board. When he is, then heck yes, take him. Even a Center. One of them could move to guard. I do not think Miami planned to take a RB in the 4th round last year, but when they saw Lamar Miller available, he was by far the highest rated remaining player on their board and they thought it a worthwhile idea to move up a little and get him.

I think you two are using different ranking systems. If you have a WR ranked as the 80th overall player and a DT ranked as the 100th player, when the draft started, and at the point you are on the clock, they are the two highest remaining players, then I'd say you take the one who was ranked 80th overall at the beginning.

You need to go look at draft results and get some actual context what the option you're advocating actually is. Go look at the players taken near the 12 pick in the draft in past drafts, and look at how viable taking specific positions would be in reality.

I would accept a pass rusher, corner, linebacker, wr in the 1st round but not a offense linemen.

Why you don't take certain positions? It's quite possible at 12 the best player available is none of those things you want, but there's a quite good player at one of those things you don't want.

So your agreeing to my assumption that you'll overreact to that fact ? Are Bowe, Wallace really worth the money they'll command.... have you even considered that ?

That's what I'm saying though. Each GM is going to have their system, and their own rankings, and their own definition of what a similar grouping will consist of. But it's absolute folly to be slave to a chart. A chart that might very well be wrong in 3 years, and most likely is anyway.

If one player is a knock out player and you have conviction of it, then hell yes you pick that player up. If Randy Moss falls to you, if Dan Marino falls to you, if Adrian Peterson falls to you (which I believe he fell a little), etc. etc. than you pick them up. But I think as the rounds progress, BPA is less important. It's at the top where BPA is much more important, IMO.

Look at the Patriots. I'm not saying Billy Belichick has been hitting grand slams in the draft, but he went very defense heavy and you can't tell me it was because of BPA.

With that offense they only need a middling defense. And despite giving up a lot of yards, they only gave up 9th least points in the league. That's not bad.

Did they screw up by not lowballing Ryan Clark ? Knowing the haters, they'll just take Clarks word for it. A

Are you ready to just throw money at a guy like Wallace ? Can he be a guy worthy of that contract ? Its seems your sold on something if your upset we'd lowball.

I think BPA is just as important, and maybe even more important, in the later rounds. For example, if there is a first round talent available in the 3rd or 4th round, take him regardless of need.

The Pats draft last year might very well have been because of BPA. I don't think there is any indication that they bypassed clearly better offensive players to take the guys they took.

No you're right lets stick to what we have been doing considering how well Ireland drafts wrs and tight ends.

last time I checked Vincent Jackson worked out last year for the Bucs.

Winston, we could have used. Also Wallace and Jennings are proven players unlike Jake Grove, Wilford, Wilson who he gave big contracts to.

Your reffering to players signed the first year of that new regime..... the roster was completely devoid of talent at that time and players were signed that met the criteria to fill those voids. Patches, if you will. They had to do a little spending to get players who fit the bill before their drafts could fill the roster. So they brought in a bunch of parcells guys and had to pay them handsomely. I don't agree with those signings... don't forget Justin Smiley either bud ! But we've developed the build through the draft mentality since then, and avoided Free Agency/trade aquisitions but for to add 1 or 2 key peices ( Dansby, Marshall, Bush, *Wake, Incognito, Moore/Garrard )

No doubt we could have used Winston, but we'd rather spend high picks on Tackles than highest paid RT ever $. It appears to me that Winston got a backloaded contract that pays out the *** in his early 30's. He could be back on the market soon.

We signed Garrad, who was damaged goods.
We signed Marshall, who then shipped off after two seasons.
Moore, Dansby, and Bush were good signings.

the build through the draft strategy works only if you can pull it off. Ireland has not.

And yes Irelands rep with Wrs isnt the best. The Dez Bryant scenario, going for Marshall instead. Turner and Gates never panned out, went to the jets. Hartline and Bess are nice "acorns". Ocho crashed and burned. Naanee??? Don't make me bring up Belichecks record at drafting/signing WRs. It's not an exact science. He poached his two best from teams rebuilding without Qbs. But with all the 2-3 round rated WRs available, the slew of pro-bowl free agents..... and all our resources. If we dont go into next season clearly better at WR than I'll jump on the hate train and be the biggest petitioner on here.

We all know just what he's capable of in the coming months. It will just be perceived 20 different ways. Can't wait.

I actually like Bowe. He's a great wr, and the only reason you didn't hear anything about him was because of the people that were throwing to him. They were garbage, and the team is a mess in general. I believe he is a star wr. Greg Jennings is my next pick. Advantage is he could probably be paid less, but his health may be an issue.

Nanee, Armstrong, Gaffney, was not effort.

got to be be very, very aggressive in free agency in the pursuit of W/R's & a pulling-offensive guard, if we are to compete next year. I'd like to see Miami pick up both Wallace and Jennings. you usually get what you pay for... I see maybe the best wide-out 4 in the NFL emerging with Mike Wallace, Greg Jennings, Bess & Hartline.

draft should be best talent regardless of position with first pick, then we need a couple of T/E's & C/B's, maybe another DE

in favor of resigning reasonably all contracts, we can't afford to lose talent.

    hope we don't lose Sherman @ O/C !!!

Jennings makes the most sense but I think a change of scenary and Bowe's red zone skills would be a win win.
I have to pass on Wallace only becausw I had him on my fantasy football team one year and he would have a great game every now and then but he would have bad games a few weeks in a row. I don't know if thats changed or not, because I only watch Dolphins games and sometimes afc east rival games when I cheer for a team to lose.

Unfortunately, there are so many variables involving these types of injuries that one cannot ideally give a proper explanation without actually knowing his case, and even then.......??

I personally prefer a more conservative treatment modality. But with different surgical techniques and aggressive therapies, a player can come back pretty quickly from injuries of supposed "long-term" rehabilitation. Adrian Peterson is the poster-boy of quick, post-surgical turnarounds. Of course, none of us have access to James Andrews (if you do, good on you!) and his world-class staff; nor do we have the drive, physical makeup, etc.

Hard to say. He could have a recurrence within 12 months, or live the rest of his life with minimal pain at/around the surgery site. Looks like he opted for the surgery instead of the conservative treatment (which was an option).

It would certainly be something to consider if he is signed. Tough call.

I do not know that I am a fan of Sherman. Taking into account with what he had to work with, I guess I get it, but my father and I would play "guess the next play" and it was pretty.....easy. I mean, of course, I am sitting at home, drinking the finest brew the MS Gulf Coast has to offer, and taking piss breaks, but I guess I was not a fan.

Maybe the lack of talent dictated play-calling, but I was not of fan of the lack of using the middle of the field on downfield passing. I also thought the Tannehill rollouts reminded me of Henne/Henning rollouts. The difference being Henne had a stronger arm and seemed to do a little better with those. I am not a fan of those because it took away 2/3 of the field. You are effectively giving the defense a chance to cover 1-2 non-playmakers instead of 3-4 non-playmakers.

Guys I've spent the last 15 minutes deleting off-topic stuff in this thread. This is not my favorite way to spend my free time.

I don't know when we decided that we could spend our time talking about each other instead of about the Miami Dolphins, but that part of the Terms of Service hasn't changed. Please make your comments about the topic of the thread - not about one another.

If I see it happen again it will be warnings/points for whomever is responsible for the infraction.

the funny thing is WR was every bit the massive need last offseason as it is this offseason.

I'm not 100% convinced we even take a WR in the first 3 rounds...even if the best WR we sign in free agency is a Dominik Hixon or Kevin Ogletree...come April Ireland will still probably pass on wideout after wideout sticking to his board and taking "higher rated" players....just like last year when he waited until the last couple rounds of the draft like an idiot as if we were stacked at the position when in reality it was the complete opposite lol.
